Sam's phone call was a surprise, to say the least. The man was off saving the world, being a hero, making headlines. It didn't make sense for him to be calling you out of the blue.

Growing up in Louisiana wasn't easy as a dark skinned desi girl. The red that some people adorned their values with bled through a lot, some of their beliefs didn't align with the red bindi your mom adorned. It was difficult finding a community, let alone one you could truly say were your friends. Sam Wilson, however, was more than eager to be a part of your colorful life. You lived right next door when you were kids and he seemed more like a blessing than a neighbor. You absolutely loved dancing and Navratri was a time where loud garba music was blasting in your house all the time. Curious little Sam couldn't help but wonder what was happening and walked up to your door, knocking on your door impatiently. You opened the door, looking at the little boy who seemed to be about your age, maybe older by a year or two. "Hey, um, what's up? I live next door, my name's Sam." "Y/n", you say as you extend your hand out to the boy, waiting for him to shake it but his eyes were stuck on you. You thought it was because something was wrong with you while he thought you were the most beautiful 8 year old in the world, in your little chaniya choli and a dainty maang teeka in your parted black bob and payals around your ankles.

"Beta,kya kar rahi hai? Bola hai na darwaza akele mummy ke bina mat kholna?!"(what are you doing,kid? Haven't I told you not to open the door without mommy?!) ,your mom yelled as she ran to the door, halting beside you. "Mummy, yeh Sam hai. He said he lives next door. Aur yeh mujhe khade khade bas ghoore ja raha hai".(this is Sam,he's standing here staring at me)

Sam, realizing he's been really impolite begins talking,instantly kicking in his southern manners, "Ma'am, I'm Sam, i live next door!" "Hi Sam, what can we do for you?", your mom asks the boy with a smile, her annoyance melting away. "Well, I heard really loud music and it's nothing like what the folks around here play, um not to say you're not a part of the neighborhood, I mean you are and I'm not here to talk badly about the music because I really like the music that's why I'm here and yeah I was wondering why you're playing the loud music, it's not that I have a problem with it or anything,like I said,"he finally finishes rambling, "I really like the music." Sam takes a huge breath in as he stops. You giggle in response and your mom smiles at him. "Well Sam, today is a very special day! We're going to be celebrating a festival called Navratri!", your mom replies, "It lasts for nine whole days! We dance a lot, we eat a lot, we pray to Goddess Durga and have a lot of fun,isn't that right,baccha?," she turns to you responding with a nod. "The music playing is called garba music, isn't it fun to listen to?" "Yes, ma'am, it is!," Sam replies excitedly.

"Sam! Where are you, boy?!" Sam perks up, realization hitting him. He was late for dinner and will now have to listen to his mom set him straight. "Well ma'am, I guess I'll leave now, my ma's calling for me, it was nice meeting y'all!" He does a little hat tip, smiling sheepishly. "Sam, come over sometime if you want! You can listen to as much garba music as you like!", your mom calls out to him. "Yeah Sam, I'll teach you how to dance!", you say, confident in your ability to make him your friend. Sam smiles, "Yes ma'am, I will! Oh and y/n, I really hope you do!" He almost has to hold in his excitement so as not to skip and give it away. That fortunate day paved the way for a beautiful, nurturing friendship. Your families became acquainted with each other and they, too, loved each other's company.

The friendship you shared with the boy with the toothy grin sooned turned into something more. You were both too scared to admit it, knowing that if it was unrequited, you'd both lose something that was far too precious to take a chance on. The day before Sam left for his first tour, the two of you spent a few choice hours in each other's presence by the dock, under the stars. "Abhi na jao chhod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahi," you hummed under your breath as you fought tears knowing the distance would probably not sustain your friendship. It wasn't out of fear that you'd lose him, it was out of the fear that maybe losing him would be better than having to be so close and yet miles away from his heart. "What's that you're singing?", Sam asked, his warm brown eyes making you feel protected against the cold breeze over the water. You reply, with a twinkle of melancholy in your dark eyes, "Just a song."

But the both of you knew it was more than that.

The tours, the avenging, the war, the blip ; Sam Wilson still hadn't forgotten about you. You hadn't forgotten about him either.

You both had a way of staying with each other without having to be there in your form. You lived in each other's minds and hearts and mended each other's cracks with those parts of yourselves.

This didn't mean you had actually seen each other since that night by the dock. The both of you only had a couple phone calls keeping you connected after. But time did as time does and you felt yourselves drifting away.Neither of you tried to reconnect either. Sam felt it was the right thing to do, to spare himself some heartache; so did you. Your lives were vastly different after he left for his tour and the two of you wanted to disturb the balance in your lives after.

So as you sat on the sofa in your childhood home in Louisiana as the sun shone brightly, Sam's name on your phone made your heart drop to your stomach. What could he possibly be calling about?

So much had happened, in your lives, your friendship, the world in general, even the universe if you will. You couldn't help but wish he wanted to build the spark that always was a part of your friendship into a fire that gave you some much needed warmth.

"Hello?," you answer, picking up the phone. "Hey y/n, " you hear Sam on the other end and you find yourself letting out a sharp breath you didn't know you'd held in, " how you doin'? ". " I'm good, Sam. How are you? "you respond. He answers in a single word, "Good ". As much as this small talk felt like it was sucking the life out of you especially because you guys were once inseparable , you were okay with just hearing his voice after all this time. However, you couldn't just pretend this attempt at conversation by Sam and you was exactly normal between the two of you. So, you decided to tell him exactly how it is. "Sam, I-", he cuts you off" Open the door, y/n", "What?", "Open the damn door, y/n", you can almost hear his smile through the phone.

You walk towards the door, almost too fast, nearly tripping over your teapoy and you open the door, hands shaking with nervous hope. "Hey, you," Sam smiles at you with that same toothy smile you'd seen all those years ago during Navratri, "miss me?" You couldn't help but tackle him in a hug, distance and longing and silent innocent grudges be damned and in that moment all you could do was thank Durga Ma for bringing him to your door all those years ago.

Navrati signifies the victory of positivity over negativity. It's a Sanskrit word which means “Nine Nights”. This Festival is being celebrated for nine days and followed by Dussehra or Vijayadashami. The three forms of the Divine Mother are being prayed. They are Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati.

The first three days of Durga signifies the destruction of all immorality and grants blessings. On the first three days, Goddess Shailpurti, Goddess Brahmacharini, and Goddess Chandraganta are worshipped.

The next three days of Lakshmi symbolize spiritual wealth. For the next three days, Goddess Kushmanda, Goddess Skandamata, and goddess Katyayani are worshipped.

The last three days are dedicated to Saraswati signifying wisdom and peace. Last three days, Goddess Kalaratri, Goddess Mahagauri, and Goddess Siddhidharti are worshipped.

Devotees seek the blessings of all three aspects of divine femininity for their happiness, prosperity, and healthy life.

In Nagpur, there are 5 famous temples of Devi Mata. They are:

1. SHRI MAHALAXMI JAGDAMBA SANSTHAN, KORADI

Koradi was previously known as Jakhapur, and its ruler, Raja Jholan, had seven children: Janoba, Nanoba, Banoba, Bairoba, Khairoba, Agnoba, and Dattasur. The monarch was dissatisfied because he lacked a daughter. He satisfied the gods by doing Yagya, Havan, Puja, and Tapashchrya, and he asked them to bless him as a daughter. A divinely beautiful girl was born.

The monarch sensed Adi Shakti manifesting in the form of his daughter after viewing her for the first time. The heavenly Shakti, who was born as his daughter, had varied encounters with the monarch of Jholan. She had provided him with proper direction, allowing him to make more informed decisions. She'd demonstrated a lot of foresight.

When she was accompanying the monarch in a fight, she had exhibited remarkable justice to both the king and his opponents. The king experienced the almighty Shakti's power once more. As the goddess Shakti, Jakhumai decided to stop at the area where the sun would set on his way back from the conflict. Jakhapur is the name given to such a location (now Koradi). Nobody installed the murti (idol), hence it's thought to be a 'Swayambhu' – materialized one.

A Kund and a Goumukh may be found in the area. A natural stream of refreshing water runs through the property. Rangoli stones can still be found in this location.

2. AGYARAM DEVI MANDIR, GANESHPETH

Agyaram Devi's whole court in Ganeshpeth, known as Nagardevi, will now be lighted with silver in a new form. The lions of Agyaram Devi, who is ensconced in the private temple of silver, are also being carved into the 'Singh Jharokha,' which will add to the grandeur of the court. Devotees would be able to see Mother Goddess Agyaram in eight more incarnations in addition to her.

Singh Jharokha is being built using silver donated by devotees under the supervision of Rajesh Rokade and Sarang Rokade of Rokade Jewellers, according to Shri Agyaram Devi Mandir Trust President and MLA Girish Vyas. In the temple itself, Kolhapur artists Rajaram Bapuso Patil, Pramod Lohar, and Anil Sutar are constructing Singh Jharokha. Singh Jharokha will resemble a bridge. In Nij Mandir, two Gajraj will be put on either side of the silver leaf. Nija Mandir contains 8 pillars, 1 large and 4 little silver domes, 2 large and 4 medium urns, and 19 small urns.

3. MAA UMIYA DHAM, NEAR OUTER RING ROAD

The Sati was created by the Shiv element during the creation of the universe. Sati was born in Daksh Prajapati's residence. Lord Shiva was her husband. Daksha planned a large Yagna but did not invite Shiva out of malice. Sati went to her father's Yagna despite not being invited. Sati and Lord Shiva were humiliated once more, and she couldn't take it any longer, so she leaped into the Yagna pyre and embraced fire. Lord Shiva became enraged and began the Tandav, carrying Sati's body on his shoulders. The entire planet shook and trembled in fear. Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces to preserve the world, and a Shaktipeeth was formed wherever these pieces fell.

Sati had hoped to marry Lord Shiva in the next birth before falling into the Yagna pyre. Lord Shiva became a hermit after Sati's death. The planet was being terrorized by the Tarkasur demon. He received the boon from Brahmaji that he could only be killed by Shiva's son. Lord Shiva is getting ready to remarry, thanks to the gods. Sati gave birth to her second child at Maina and Himalayas' home and became known as Parvati-Uma. She married Shiva after a long period of intense meditation. Kartik, their son, annihilated Tarkasur.

Umiya Dham is a picnic spot where families, friends can come and spend time together. These days, this place has become famous for weddings too.

4. GRUHLAXMI AMBABAI TEMPLE, SEMINARY HILLS

The temple of the mind is peace, and the temple of the heart is love. This is a famous Gede Prama quotation. There is a feeling that wherever one worships in the world, he or she will find tranquility. This is a fact that no one can deny. Gruhlaxami Ambabai Temple in Nagpur is one such serene location. Nagpur, popularly known as the "Orange City," is famed for its sacred and spiritual sites. Where one can spend quality time with family and friends while simultaneously seeking spiritual fulfillment. Ambabai temple is one of Nagpur's most well-known temples.

This temple has a long and illustrious history. The origin of this idol was discovered around the year 1756. It was discovered in Warora during some farming activities. Shaligram is used to create Gruhlaxami Ambabai's main idol. In the year 2015, on Chaitra Suddha Ashtami, Friday, in Nagpur, a duplicate of an idol was placed. The idol is Kul devra of the Khot Family. The Khot Family's 13th generation continues to adorn the deity in the same way that their forefathers did, with all of the same rites.

Gods such as Mahabali Hanuman, Shri Gruheshwara (Shiva), Shri Prachand Kaali, Shri Kaal Bhairava, Shri Mangal Chandi Devi, and Shri Shani Deva have their abodes at this temple.

This temple is located in the Seminary Hills area. At this location, one can enjoy

the beauty of nature while simultaneously seeking the goddess's graces.

5. BHAWANI MATA MANDIR, PARDI

Shri Bhavani Mata Mandir is located 10 kilometers east of Nagpur, in Pardi village on the Punapur road. This ancient and largest temple is historically significant, and it is stated that Mataji's idol is swayambhu (self-evolved) and performs marvels for followers.

Navaratri is celebrated here with passion, and a significant number of devotees flock here during that time to seek the blessings of Bhavani Mata.

Schooling Then & Now...

During the closure of schools due to pandemic from March 2020 till date (End Oct 2020), I have heard how classes are being held and attended from home at least in Metros. I am reminded of my school days during1954-66 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

My first school was a family run primary school in the residential complex that we lived. I studied there as it was convenient to attend and my elder sister also went to the same school. It was housed in a bungalow with four to five rooms, each housing one standard. It was from 11 am to 5 pm. It was a traditional school with standard syllabus. The school was co-ed and we sat on floor. Our school bag had a book or two and a slate (black stone) and white chalk. We walked to the school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati

Then I went to a special primary school run by Sarabhais (Vikram Sarabhai’s family). The school had four classes, one each for one standard. Each class had 10-12 students only. The school started at 8.30 am and till 4 pm. On arrival all children would be given a glass of milk and then academic lessons would start till lunch at 12 noon. The children brought roti/chapati from home but all else was served by the school-Dal, Rice, Vegetables, Papad, pickles etc. Children from class 4 normally managed the lunch service, though food was cooked by others. School was co-ed and we hardly carried any books or other items in the school bag except a box of roti/chapati. I travelled by the city bus to commute to school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati.

After lunch, the non-academic activities were the main focus. These included music (mainly folk), folk dance (garba/dandiya), painting, carpentry, stitching/tailoring etc. the teachers of high caliber came to teach these special skills or hobby. Our music teacher was an AIR (All India Radio) artiste. We also undertook projects of a long duration. For example, in carpentry class we built Sam’s Cabin on the treetop (the school had a large area). We also staged plays in open air once a year. Each and every student must participate in the play and hence they were selected accordingly. One was “Alibaba and Forty Thieves”, and another was “Gulliver’s travel to pigmy land” (a shadow play).

The school also imparted general knowledge in the most effective way. We once slept in the school so that we could be taken to an observatory at 3 am to see the sky and the stars. We were once taken to the Municipal office to see the model of Nehru Bridge under construction (before1960) followed by a visit to the riverbed to see the construction. Children were encouraged to explore and most of us would sit on the wall (on the riven bank) just watch the Sabarmati river in flood. We were allowed to climb trees and play with our teachers. I found it to be a good place for an all around development.

Then I was admitted to a popular Gujarati medium school which boasted of the large area (I think 300 acres or more) and it followed Gandhian philosophy. Our uniform was from Khadi. The trust was Jain. The school was co-ed and I commuted by city bus or walked the 3 km short route on some days with other students and a teacher. Theschool was from 10.40 am to 5.10 pm with two short breaks. Saturday was half day- 7.30 am to 11 am.

The middle school (std 5 to 7) was in a separate building about 500 meters from either entry. We sat on floor with a wooden stool in front. The school bag had textbooks, notebooks and a pencil box along with a snacks box. In addition to academic classes we had optional selected non-academic courses. Music was compulsory and my weakest subject. One could choose from music, painting, stitching/tailoring or agriculture. I opted for agriculture. I was given a piece of land (5 x 10 ft) and allowed to grow vegetables etc. The vegetables were available for sale and I used to take some home.

The high school (std 8 to 11) was in a larger building near the main gate. The compass box was added to books and notebooks. We used to write with an ink pen.The classes had a bench. Between these buildings was a huge playground for volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi etc.We had a prayer hall covered but open from sides where all students would gather first thingin the morning and pray. At this gathering, we were also able to enjoy cultural programs based on the festivals and some speeches by leading persons- politicians, writers, thinkers, and ex-students.

During the entire school years, I attended classes regularly and was not permitted to attend any private tuition, In any case private tuition was not so popular then, My father insisted that I asked all my doubts to the teachers in the class or after class in the teachers (staff) room. I hardly recall any parents’ teacher meeting. Strangely I had not spoken to any girl student at my school or class throughout the eleven years, though it was co-ed. I loved outdoor games and in the eight standard I joined a hockey coaching center (outside) run by an ex-India player. This led me to go for state school level hockey tournament and participated in all India school meet in Shillong in Feb,1966.

My daughter went to an international school in Japan and her experience was different than schooling in India. She walked to school everyday for 20 minutes and carried only an umbrella and lunch on some days. She played basketball, hockey, and volleyball. She would go ice skating or on over night trips to gain knowledge not just from textbooks but from experiences. When she came back to study in India, she found the education system hard and competitive and teachers had minimal interest in teaching except for scoring high marks.

I now will attempt to compare the above school life with present day school life in metros before COVID-19 (March 2020). Though I have no first-hand experience of it, I have gathered it from parents of school going kids. Most of these go to a private school and not municipal or govt school in various parts of the globe.

Before COVID-19 struck, the school time was 8 am to 2 pm and probably five days a week. Kids must carry a huge/heavy school bag containing water bottle, books, notebooks, compass box, lunch box (for two breaks). Kids do use ball point pen or gel pen. The school bag weighs a lot and there are complaints of kids, but no solution seems to be in sight. Most kids go to school by school bus or auto-rickshaw or dropped by parents. Hardly anybody walks to school. A lot of focus is on academic work and homework. Most schools lack a playground. Some schools do encourage extra-curricular activities, but most kids take up extra-curricular activities because of the parents or peer pressure. Some govt or municipal schools run two shifts to make maximum use of the infrastructure- school building. Most classes have 50 children in each room.

Many of the schools have annual day and they are a huge burden on parents both in terms of time and expenses. Most items on annual day celebrations lack heritage or folk influence on dance or music or singing. Most kids (also their teachers) do watch tv and are influenced by its content. Many kids have the luxury of travel domestically or internationally with their parents on holidays. I do not see many activities among school going kids in residential complexes. Rural schools might still be following the historical timing (11 am to 5 pm) and the syllabus with almost poor teachers.

After March 22, 2020 the schools were closed, and students and teachers were encouraged to attend online classes. In last six months (till Oct end) the schools are closed and online classes have become the routine.

In metros, many private schools are actively following the online class concept. I understand the online class can be attended provided one has a laptop or a tablet or a smart mobile with adequate data and speed for Wi-Fi connection. The classes are for four hours a day. The homework is also given online and submitted online. In most cases projects given seem to be done by parents and not children which is not the best way to learn. While writing exams adults at home keep prompting the child to ensure high score /marks are achieved. Teaching a child short cuts or to cheat is not beneficial in the long run. Parents forget that getting marks above 90% should not be the only aim for the child.

Many families are facing the shortage of hardware as the parent or parents attend office from home (WFH) and they need the same hardware- laptop or tablet and a strong WiFi connection. If there is more than one child attending class/school from home the shortage of hardware and infrastructure is felt more and is also a financial burden too.

Poor people are finding it hard to attend classes online. My domestic help has three children going to school and that is either municipal or govt school. They also hold classes online. But the poor family has only two mobiles and only one is smart. Her husband is a driver but has lost his job.

I dare not imagine what is happening at rural schools and their classes with no infrastructure like WiFi connectivity or smart mobile at home. Some may not have even electricity at home. I hope that large IT firms instead of running schools in rural India under the name of NGO’s should have ensured a good e-learning system but that seems like a dream. This would have been helpful during these times and need not depend on poor quality teachers.

In all the above activities the major problem is that children have lost physical touch with school, class, and teacher. They surely miss outdoor activities (sports etc.) with their classmates. They also must be missing the cultural activities on the festivals.

The mental stress of being confined to a residence for so long must be very real and parents must be finding it difficult to attend to it among their children and themselves.

Conclusion…….

I do believe that old time classes at school and freedom to mingle/play with classmates and children from neighborhood were great contributors to develop a child’s all faculties. The emphasis was outdoor activities and non-academic interests to be followed. The child was not stressed with pressures from parents, siblings, or peer day in and out.

Prior to lockdown due to pandemic, the metro school going kid was stressed with many issues- get up early, catch the bus or transport or do homework or dress properly with or without makeup for girls, etc. Parents were also stressed to see that their child is not lagging only in academic pursuit but also otherwise.

After lock down the situation has worsened for the child. The child is confined to the four walls of the residence with same family members and has no chance to go outdoors. (recent relaxation may permit going out but many parents do not want to take the risk). Outdoor activities are almost none and 24x7 the child is using handheld devices –Laptop, tablet, or smart phone to do schoolwork and to play games, also to see cartoons or other entertaining content on TV.

I pray for early release of restrictions due to COVID-19 and restoration of schools to normal working in general and in rural areas in particular.

This Friday, while all eyes will be on Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain, the release of 'LoveYatri: Journey of Love' is going to be just as critical for another newcomer, director Abhiraj Minawala. The young filmmaker takes us through his aspirations and expectations while making a debut with a Salman Khan production. He's honed his skills under the tutelage of prominent filmmakers and he is hoping to have a have a long and successful career ahead. Excerpts…

How do you view your journey from being Ali Abbas Zafar's assistant on Sultan, to making your debut as a director in a film produced by Salman Khan? 'LoveYatri: Journey of Love' has had its share of controversy and attention too. What were the challenges? It’s been a long journey from being the first AD to a director. It takes a lot of patience to get this far. It started on the sets of 'Sultan', where I met Salman Khan and Aayush Sharma for the first time. Aayush was trying to understand the workings of every department on a set. I knew he wanted to act but, not once did it occur to me that we would end up launching our careers together. I took a year’s break after Sultan and when I finally ran into Salman sir, he asked me for ideas and he was keen that I make a film for his banner. When I started working, I felt Aayush could be a great fit and he liked the script, too. What advice did your mentor Ali Abbas Zafar offer you? He had once told me that for your first film, you should work in a space that you are familiar with. Don’t take on too many challenges right away. Take one step at a time and build a strong base for a longer and stronger career as a filmmaker. I stuck to that mantra. As a Gujarati, I could connect with 'LoveYatri’s...' story really well. It’s not like I didn’t find great stories before this, but this one excited me the most. My mother’s family is from Ahmedabad. I’ve spent many summer holidays there and I have seen several Navratri celebrations, which are distinctly different from the ones in Mumbai. People go dancing on all nine nights. I wanted to bring out these beautiful things about the state, through a simple romantic story. Aayush plays Sushrut, who wants to start a garba academy but no one takes his ambition seriously. Warina plays Michelle, a Baroda girl who stays in London. They meet during Navrati, share a common passion for dance and fall in love. Isn’t that sweet and simple? With the audience’s evolving taste in cinema, even modern love stories have had to reinvent the formula. Do you think a simple love story like 'LoveYatri...', will be able to appeal to contemporary sensibilities? What made you believe that a simple story like 'LoveYatri...' would appeal to contemporary sensibilities? This film is a like a hidden treasure waiting to be found. In late 2000s, films like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' and 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' opened doors for different kind of stories, which could be set in parts of the country other than Mumbai. You will be surprised to know just how many people want to watch films like 'LoveYatri...'. The last time I saw this kind of innocent romance was in 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. I had worked on that film, so it was all the more special. Our film has a contemporary style, but it also has the innocence of the ’90s films, which is a rarity today. More recently, I felt 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' introduced people to the real texture of Uttar Pradesh with a simple love story. Similarly, through a love story and a set of characters, I’ve tried to introduce the country to the flavours of Gujarat. I’m sure people will savour this film; this is the kind of romance that I feel has vanished from the big screen. Launching a newcomer is a huge responsibility for any director or producer. In this case, Salman is launching Aayush who is his brother-in-law. Do you feel far more pressure because of it? There’s a lot of pressure on me but it’s not because Aayush is in the film. Salman has shown confidence in me that I can helm a film for his banner, and more so with his brother-in-law. He’s launching a new trio which is a lot of responsibility on all of us. The fact that he’s confident about us gives us a lot of self-belief. The Khan family is a tightly knit unit. Since you have worked with Salman and Aayush, what sort of a rapport do you share with their family? For me, Aayush is like a brother, but when I am going to his house or Salman sir’s house, I don’t ever forget what I am going there for. Right now, I go there when I have work. The family is indeed very loving and accepting. Like Salim Khan saab saw the film and had only one thing to say, ‘It’s a sweet film. You’ve done justice to it.’ It’s a huge compliment. Previously, Ali had shown his films to him. When Ali heard about this, he said, ‘It’s great because if Salim sir doesn’t like something, he has a lot more to say.’ What was Salman Khan’s reaction ? He just smiled and gave me thumbs up for it. Now that you have directed a film for Salman’s banner, do you have aspirations of directing him in a film too? Yeah! I am hoping for something like that, but there is a long way to go. I need to prepare myself thoroughly before working with a superstar like him. My next film depends on how people receive 'LoveYatri...'
