‘Love & Death’ Movie: All you need to Know About Candy Montgomery’s Real Case

The second television adaptation of Candy Montgomery's story to air in less than a year is called "Love & Death," and it will premiere on HBO Max (soon to be just Max) on April 27. The original version was "Candy" on Hulu, starring Jessica Biel as Candy and Melanie Lynskey as Betty Gore, Candy's neighbor whom she eventually kills. Nearly a year ago, in May 2022, the series began streaming. Now, Lily Rabe plays Betty, the second-grade teacher, and Elizabeth Olsen assumes the part of Montgomery, a housewife from Fairview, Texas. Both programs are based on a real event, which is described below. The most recent book, published by David E. Kelley, includes elements from a two-part description of the crime in Texas Monthly. Montgomery started an affair with Allan Gore, who was married to Betty, one of Candy's friends, in 1978 when she was a 29-year-old mother of two (Jesse Plemmons plays Allan Gore in the most recent limited series). They all went to church together, as did Montgomery's husband Pat (Patrick Fugit). Gore was expecting their second child at the time of her husband's year-long affair, and when the kid was born, he ended it. Although Montgomery was upset, there was initially no conflict. Gore was out of town on June 13, 1980, and he was unable to contact his wife. They discovered her dead body and their new child, who was awake and sobbing in her cot, after calling neighbors to check on her. 41 ax strokes had been used to kill Gore. Montgomery had been to Gore's house, according to the Dallas Morning News, to pick up a bathing suit for her daughter. Gore then questioned her friend about the relationship. After killing Gore with an ax at some time, Montgomery eventually acknowledged in court that she had taken a shower in Gore's bathroom before continuing her day. Montgomery confessed to the relationship after the investigation got underway, making him a top suspect. Later, she also confessed to the killing while justifying it as an act of self-defense. She claimed that after Gore confronted her about the relationship, she attacked Montgomery, who ultimately managed to protect herself by fighting the ax out of her hands. She conducted a polygraph test prior to the eight-day trial, and the results showed that she was telling the truth. A jury of nine women and three men found Montgomery not guilty on October 30, 1980. Four years after the Texas Monthly articles were published, the authors of "Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs," John Bloom and Jim Atkinson, published a book analyzing the case and trial.
