Relying on the Lord

Matthew 19:26 reads, "Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." It is impossible to make it to heaven on our own. It doesn't matter how many homeless people we've fed, how many friends we've helped, or how many senior homes we've caroled to. Whether we want to rely on him or not, we need God throughout our first life, all the way until our second life (Second life referring to being born again in heaven). We cannot get into heaven by worldly achievements or anything mortal humans deem "important". There isn't an angel sitting at Heaven's gates making sure you had all A's your Sophomore year of high school, and only if you did, let you pass on through. We get to heaven by believing in Jesus Christ that he died for us and having a relationship with him (John 3:16).

In John 15:5 Jesus compares himself to the vine and his people as the branches. Say you were to cut a limb from the main vine. Would it grow on its own? Of course not. It needs the vine itself to provide it with nutrients. In the verse, Jesus says, " If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." We cannot grow in faith by not having a relationship with God and taking steps to further it. We need his guidance to get through life.

Sometimes things are keeping me from having a prosperous relationship with God. This means I prioritize it more than my relationship with Him, making it an idol. Idols aren't just false gods and golden calves, an idol is anything you hold higher than God. In many cases, especially in today's world, it's money or power. Everyone wants to be richer than everyone and have control over whoever they can get their hands on. For me personally, the opinion of others is my main idol. Other people's opinions, especially the people I deem important in my life, create how I look at myself. My friends, my family, and sometimes strangers have such a hold on my self-image, that sometimes I don't let God even have a say. This keeps me from deepening my relationship with God because no matter how many times I can read in Genesis that God made me and said I was good, I will still find reasons (that my peers have pointed out) that make me "not good".

As you finish reading this I want you to think about your relationship with God. How strong do you really think it is? What are some of the idols in your life that are keeping you from strengthening it further? Finally, I want you to wonder what you can do to put God as a top priority in your life.
