“Visit Gamler’s”, our newest design at Society6. We’re still tweaking a few sizes for some products, but this is adapted from an old photograph of an advertisement from Gamler’s in Buffalo, NY promoting their new gift department. The Gamler’s Jewelers Building in the 500 block of Main Street in downtown Buffalo dates back to 1902. Harry Gamler bought the building and built a new storefront in 1934, where the business remained until 1995. Along with the adjacent buildings, the former Berger’s Department Store, Gamler’s has been converted to loft apartments and renamed the Belesario. The other day, @risecollaborative collaborative posted a fascinating article by Caitlin Hartney that offered an interesting look into Buffalo history and the resistance to changing gender roles during World War II when, despite the desperate need for women’s labor to help the war effort, they were still belittled and treated as second class citizens. “In 1944, as people began to imagine post-war society, anxieties over the state of the American nuclear family and women’s newfound place in the labor economy heightened. Recreated from an old promotional poster, it's time to follow the crowd to the Dellwood Ballroom. Located at 1388 Main Street at Utica in Buffalo, New York, this was a dance hall where the bouncers were there to make sure you followed the dress code and hadn't been drinking. You paid a dime a dance to get in front of Harold Austin’s orchestra.
