Sandy Skies: Pondicherry is the kind of a place that you'd remember for the rest of your life, should you visit once. Although experiences differ, the way this place makes one feel is pleasant, warm and peaceful. Situated between the old sea and the new city, the New Lighthouse of Puducherry is neither magnificent nor splendid in its build but neither are mirrors. It is what they aid you see, that brings you awe and this lighthouse is no different. The view from atop this structure is refreshing. Historic and now home to history, itself, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a palace turned museum that now houses sculptures, petroglyphs, headstones and herostones, declaring deaths, sacrifices, victories and charities through the kingdom. Located very close to the main streets of Madurai, this palace is a must for folks interested in history of the city and its reign as capital, long forgotten. Love of Lighthouses: I have always been drawn to lighthouses as abstractions of lures that draw men away from the arms of seas as opposed to a welcome landing. That said, I have always been mesmerised by their structural transformation over ages from being whale-fat lit domes to blinding photon beams of today. Unmanned: There exist places that still thrive in luck of being too normal to not attract to itself some human infestation and this "secret" pier of Dhanushkodi is one such beauty that is still safe from the trail dusts of litterers and polluters. I actively make an effort to not tag such places to their exact locations or tag their pictures zeroed in, in an attempt to preserve their desertedness, which is the lone factor that has & will save them and let them just be. This pier once served as a loading dock for sea-trade and is a souvenir that remains to serve the locals on fishing expeditions. And since this pier faces exactly the opposite way from the other pier I spoke of in a different photograph on 7th, towards the Bay of Bengal, it has absolutely zero wave force, laying calmly. And calm enough for schools of average sized fish preying on schools of smaller fish and clear enough for me and my pal to watch that hunt. The only thing that reminds you, when you're here, that you're still in Dhanushkodi is the same gush of gales that battle your hair, all the while. Fishing Communities of India: What you're seeing here is one of the densest domestic tourism hubs of India, roping in hundreds to thousands of visitors per day. This is the Tip of India, Kanyakumari, bound by water on most of its boundary, and fishing industry flourishes almost all round the year, every year, with an ocean and two seas meeting up here. Yet, these fishing communities, even today, remain poor, under developed, and frankly, uncared for, except for disaster reliefs or annual financial allocations. Despote being situated on banks of thriving tourist attractions like the Thiruvalluvar Statue, the Vivekananda Memorial or the ThriveniSangam, not mentioning that it is the tip of India, the southern most part of this peninsula where fisheries and industrial fishing corporations sprang up decades ago, these communities remain neglected. Boats that are decades old, rusty and almost definitely not up to safety standards are tripped for their daily wares. Chatting with the locals, you'll learn that most live in low lying areas, that run a high risk of flooding often. Raging: my love for piers is only paralleled by my love for seas. And this one is as best as it gets. This pier of Dhanushkodi lies almost as a virtual barrier between the two ancient places: Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram, with each on either side of this pier. The drive through here to reach the ruins of Dhanushkodi is one of the most unforgettable rides of India. The sands, unbound by rock or sea, lash onto drivers, as if inthe middle of a sandstorm, all day, all year. I warn you to have your windows rolled up or your helmets and shades tightened shut as these sands shoot through you like bullets in a war zone, all thanks to the gales raging from open seas, rushing through this tiny strip of land, to meet the Bay of Bengal on the other side. This pier, in particular, South to wards the Indian Ocean enjoys a continuous battery from the International currents, making this pier lay closed for any adventurers to venture to its end. But you can still approach it, up to a distance and enjoy the violence of the seas as you watch the unstopable waves crash into this immovable pier, with warcries, as were thunder, promising their return. Colonial relics: The Old lighthouse of Puducherry or Pondicherry had been operational for over 140 years since the september of 1836 and still stands relatively unscathed, today, it's offices serving the local govt. It's a reminder of how 19th century saw French architecture assume humbler craftsmanship. The structure is located in the old "French colony" or the "White Town" part of Pondi, by the rock beach, which is not to be missed at both sunrise and sunset. It is not open to tourists now but can still be approached to be admired and clicked for it has long stood as one of the defining emblems of European impact on South Indian constructs. Pondicherry is one of the most pleasant and serene places that I have ever been to, in India. People here are kind, warm, and helpful, and very hospitable. Travellers to this part of Tamilnadu are treated like personal guests, by any localite one may encounter. The old port and trade relations have diversified the culture here largely and the conservative traditionality is subtle for the good. I spent an entire week here and I couldn't get enough of it. To landless horizons: This picture was taken from the "Kanyakumari Pier" or "the pier of Kanyakumari" that lies to the exact North of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, tip of India. This is a view that changes shades, dawn through dusk. Mornings here are usually accompanied by humungous oceanic clouds that seem to sprinkle a sense of peace even when they don't rain. Just gazing at them for however long you manage to stay lost in thought, brings a soothing start or climax to your day. I suggest being here both at dawn and dusk, for there is no better vantage to open seas from Kanyakumari than from here. You can get here on foot, from the Amman temple. There are a couple of Churches and a mosque nearby. And the street vendors asking these streets have some delicious snacks ranging from idli to vadapaav and manchurian to choleBature. Throwback to a peaceful swim in Kali River at Dandeli 🖤 This location is around five to ten kilometers ahead of the Kali River Dam at Dandeli, where you can relax, have a swim and zone out into nature. Dandeli is one of the few places that I have seen very little plastic contamination in. Misty Mornings: What could be one of the best views of sunrise, the Bay of Bengal from Pamban Island's shores, is not a scenery you'd wanna miss. From the break of dawn, the waters and their studded fisherboats keep changing hues, with each passing minute. From an intimidating dark to pearly, frothy blues, these waters are a paradise to both eyes and ears, with their gentle, bubbly hymns contrasting their grave appearances. The gales here are quite the turncloaks too, being all mellow and pleasant in the day but masking off to villainous rumbles at night. To life: About 200 kilometers Southwest of Pune city is a magical shore town, scarcely populated and a teensy step above sea level. I say magical because it is a nesting ground of endangered Olive Ridley turtles. During their breeding season, the Ridleys shore, lay eggs and swim back into the sea. And from anywhere between a fortnight to a month, these eggs will then be protected by agencies, until they hatch. It is illegal to steal these eggs from the wild. Visitors get to watch the hatchlings that pop each day, from the entire clutch, and take their first steps into the sea, upon a velvety black sand beach. It's a very strange warmth that envelopes your insides when you watch them wobble around on their baby flippers, in pocket-sized shells. This shot was captured right after I have watched my share of hatchlings get blanketed under the gentle waves of the Arabian Sea. If you do visit, please do not litter and stay away from water for a few minutes after the hatchlings get into water. Surreal: I have always been fascinated with the idea behind this form of editing and I have found numerous explanations behind the motivation and meaning, ranging from a way of portraying perspective & empathy, to plain surrealism. But what I have always felt, and echoed with those who feel the same, is that this presentation is a way of stepping back and looking at things that have made you happy and we're big dor you, in becoming; those that you somehow lost to time, along the way. With this particular image, I imagine it leading the path down memory lane, inviting to recapture what you have obliviously let loose and have lost. Ergo, the monochromatism of flashbacks. Lullabies: These falls from Chhatthisgarh, India, are quite magical. It's like they really are alive, for in summer, the river Indravathi that jumps over these cliffs runs slender and gentle, making space for mankind and local non-marine wildlife to fish, inhabit and camp on its sandy shores, where you can set up tiny camping spits and have a teeny bonfire. But I must warn you, there are a lot of canines and my party managed to befriend and they didn't leave our side until we left the place but there are rowdy drunks that roam these sands too. So, be cautious. But come monsoon, Indravathi herself runs wild, aa if enraged, with all the flood run gets to her and all these sands, and stairs that lead down to them, almost all the tiers, lay submerged for almost half the year.
