The Badger Arrives
The former car ferry for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, now a tourist operation for the most part, arrives Ludington, Michigan. It now carries people and their automobiles across the lake between this place and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The structure in the foreground is the Ludington North Breakwater Light.
[I should note: the railroad had a sister ship to this one named the Spartan. Thus one for a Wisconsin State University and one for one situated Michigan. I doubt that this would happen in contemporary times with the attack on higher education going on.]
This was very much one of these events where things unfold every so slowly, lulling one into a complacency...only to then accelerate very quickly. This so much as to catch a photographer with their pants down, but I think I was able to squeeze off the frames that I wanted. This daily summer event deserves more attention—and perhaps booking passage; one can go here if interested.
One thing that mildly disconcerts me regarding these shots: the lighthouse seen here has a definite tilt toward open water. [Whenever possible, I level my images based on the horizon, easily done here with Lake Michigan in the background, and the tilt is real.] I don't know if it was designed that way, to withstand pounding of large waves from that direction, or something that's happened over time.

Follow Up on the Badger
I wanted to add some support to my previous post, showing the Badger coming into Ludington, Michigan. [The image above is from the same series, taken recently, July 18th 2024.]
I mentioned the Spartan, sister ship to the Badger. Here's a shot of it from three years ago, sitting in Ludington where it is stored and used for spare parts for the Badger.

I also have a few shots of the Badger (from the late-1970s) when it was hauling railroad cars between Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and what I assume to have been Ludington. These two black and white analog images were made in Milwaukee; the ship was part of the C&O Railway at the time—as the Chessie logo on the stack attests.

The first image above shows the ship in its entirety, while the second illustrates how and where the rail cars were loaded into the aft end of the ship. When it was hauling rail, one could book passage, as well as take your auto along (apparently).

As we leave Holiday Depression time and enter Winter Seasonal Depression time, my mind is at the beach. I woke up this morning and I could practically feel the sun on my chest. My happy place is the little town of Ludington, Michigan. Summer can't get here soon enough. _ #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #Summer #SeasonalDepression #Winter #Ludington #LudingtonMI #PureLudington #LoveLudington #PureMichigan #WinterBlues #CabinFever #Sunset #TheBeach #Happiness #HappyPlace http://bit.ly/2CR6NXr

Arrival
The Candace Elise arrives Ludington, Michigan. It's pushing the barge Robert F. Deegan.
The Candace Elise was built in 1981 and has had several owners and monikers; you can read about it here. Most pictures I see of it on-line were taken before the raised wheel house was added. It now works year around (breaking ice in winter) for Ashton Marine.
I imagine the Robert F. Deegan is empty as it appears to sit high in the water, but am uncertain.
