Exclusive Interview Matts Ramstorp Chair for SMi’s Next Generation Pharmaceutical Cleanroom
Tumblr media
SMi Reports: Interview with Matts Ramstorp, Professor in Cleanroom Technology, BioTekPro, chairing the upcoming SMi’s 2nd Annual Next Generation Pharmaceutical Cleanroom in London on 7 – 8 October 2020.
The 2nd Annual Next Generation Pharmaceutical Cleanroom Conference is taking place in London, UK on the 7 and 8 October 2020. SMi are proud to introduce some insightful content from the conference chairman Matts Ramstorp, Professor in Cleanroom Technology, BioTekPro.
Matts Ramstorp will be chairing the conference and also speaking on: ‘Cleanroom Operators – Still a Major Potential Risk’ and covering:
• Cleanroom operators – Needed or not? • Know how – Know why! • Operator failures due to lack of knowledge • Cleanroom garment demands • Integrity testing of cleanroom garments
Here is a snippet of the interview:
The pharmaceutical cleanroom industry has matured greatly over recent years, what significant developments have you noticed in the last year? The major difference that I see is that we are increasingly more focused on risk assessments, and not merely looking to reach certain levels of cleanliness. Our GMP is not that specific and detailed, which has forced the pharmaceutical industry to work according to QRM – Quality Risk Management principles.
What do you see as the greatest challenge for you to overcome personally in the field of cleanrooms at the moment? At the moment my biggest concern is the coronavirus pandemic. The present situation allows no physical meetings, and it can be quite hard to work with trouble shooting without being physically present. Operator training, which I consider as my favorite area of work can, despite Corona, be solved either by online training or using internet platforms.
What are the key challenges if any faced in the cleanroom marketplace? Well, the key challenge today, from my point of view, is the coming Annex 1. The delay of this important document has been quite stressful. I see the same reaction amongst the different companies that I work with. We are all looking forward to the publishing of the new Annex 1.
The full interview, speaker line-up and conference agenda are available to download online at http://www.cleanroomtechnology.co.uk/PR3
Matts Ramstorp has been working for more than 35 years with cleanliness and hygiene as a researcher, consultant, lecturer, and educator. Matts has a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, Technology, a PhD in Applied Biochemistry (Biotechnology) and became Professor in Contamination Control and Cleanroom technology at LTH, Lund University of Technology in 2002. Matts has also published several textbooks in the field of cleanroom technology.
There is an early bird saving of £200 available for bookings made before 28 August. Register online at: http://www.cleanroomtechnology.co.uk/PR3

In OhiO Wednesday’s second online edition, Maddie Leach took us inside a new proposal being cooked up for a potential public art project that re-engages with the infamous “modern artistic technological cathedral”, LTH-Föntänen” [or commonly known as “Laxtrappan”] – which never worked to the vision of both the original architect and sculptor. This sculpture sits stripped bare and dormant since the attempt to reconstruct it in the 90s. Leach voiced early reasons why she aims to work with this site, this structure and the community that surrounds this 1970s work in Lund. The base inquiries around this work was, also, relayed: Can public artworks fail? Can public artworks be revitalized; temporary; permanent? And then, adding extra inquiries surrounding the role proposed to play as a re-engagement-provocateur where notions of adaption, authorship, intellectual property law and creating contracts could become objectified as art objects/experiences.
The discussion that followed evolved and created space for Leach to further explain these inquiries this work addresses. The discussion also touched upon thoughts on plans to work with the community that surrounds this historical piece which includes e.g. estates of the original creators, deans of Lund University and more. We also discussed that the Mathematics department is next door to LTH-Föntänen. They work with calculations for engineering contexts, and there is irony in the fact that the fountain has never really worked throughout the 50 years it has faced their building.

Intriguing discovery provides new insights into photoelectric effect
Tumblr media
The discovery that free electrons can move asymmetrically provides a deeper understanding of one of the basic processes in physics: the photoelectric effect. It was first described by Albert Einstein and explains how high frequency light releases electrons from a material. The results have been published in Physical Review Letters. "The photoelectric effect has been studied for many years and it's very uplifting to suddenly understand how it works in a deeper way," says Marcus Dahlström, Associate Senior Lecturer of Mathematical Physics at Lund University in Sweden, who worked on the article with colleagues in Lund and at Stockholm University. The researchers studied how an electron that has just been released from an atom via the photoelectric effect can change its wave motion using a laser field. The free electron can both absorb and emit laser light, which changes the electron's rotation in an asymmetrical way. To discover this phenomenon, the researchers used ultrashort laser pulses with a time precision on an attosecond scale, which is staggeringly short: 0.000000000000000001 seconds. The discovery of the asymmetry in combination with the high time resolution gave the researchers the opportunity to disrupt the electrons' ingrained behaviour. From only moving up and down along the laser field, the researchers succeeded in getting the electrons to also spread sideways. "Now that we understand there is an asymmetry in the free electrons' movement, we can gain a better understanding of the quantum dynamics in photo-ionisation," says David Busto, doctoral student of Atomic Physics at LTH. In classical physics, particles move in a deterministic way from one point to another via Newton's laws. In contrast to this, quantum mechanics says that a particle can move to several places simultaneously. The researchers have been able to take advantage of the latter: "When we change the direction of the electron wave, we are using quantum mechanical interference. That is, the electron takes several paths towards its changed wave form. In classical physics the electron can only go one way." The phenomenon of the asymmetrical movement pattern has been proved both in experiments and in theory. The results are based on the knowledge that electrons increase their rotating movements when they absorb light, something the American-Italian physicist Ugo Fano demonstrated 30 years ago. The research aims to control electrons in atoms and molecules with greater precision. In the long term, it is conceivable that this and other basic science knowledge on how atoms and molecules function will provide an opportunity to improve the way reactions are controlled in molecules, which in turn can pave the way for more effective chemistry. 10. Urban turban
Win Win Win. Trečiasis win man ;).
Tumblr media
