Would you mind sharing your views on backpacking? 👀
Take all of this with a grain of salt because I'm mostly just bothered by backpacking content on Instagram.
I think the concept is fine. I'd actually like to do some backpacking some time.
But backpacking content, as well as most overland* content, always has a really weird vibe. It almost feels like cosplaying poverty if you know what I mean??
It's almost always young people from the so called "West" and almost always they're somewhere in South or Southeast Asia. The most popular backpacking destinations I'm seeing at the moment are Bali (exclusively that part of Indonesia for some reason), Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The algorithm has recently also started showing me content from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
Since flights to these destinations are usually quite expensive, and many of these people stay abroad long enough that they might need a visa and that accommodation and food would also add up, it can be safely assumed these people have a certain amount of financial stability. Some of them are full time influencers too.
And while travelling with a backpack instead of a suitcase makes sense, and while you want to have an "authentic" experience, the vibe on those videos is often sooooo weird.
They're always like "I just spent 45h standing in a cramped bus without AC because it was only $1. I'm sleeping on the floor of this abandoned building that costs me $4 a night. I only carry 2 t-shirts with me, can't find a laundromat and I'm travelling for 3 months. Yesterday I got scammed and got food poisoning."
And I'm like why are you doing this? Is it really more "authentic" just because it's a foreign country? You can find the same uncomfortable situations and people who live like that all the time in your home country, but when you're abroad it's cool and authentic and #humbling #eatpraylove. Meanwhile there's also people in that same country you're backpacking through who, like, have a comparable standard of living you're used to. Your holiday doesn't have to be luxury resorts but it also doesn't have to be absolutely god awful.
And of course there's also the factor of adrenaline and stepping out of your comfort zone but with these videos it seems like they're almost glamorising having an awful time in an "exotic" country because that's what it's supposed to be like? I guess?
Idk I feel like I should get the opinion of someone living in one of those backpacking hotspots to make sure I'm not just getting annoyed at nothing but I think the vibe is off.
*overland content as in "travelling from XY to YZ without flying - Day 420" type videos. They're often interesting and I follow some of those people and I actually have some ideas for cool overland or long distance train trips but some of the accounts also have a weird vibe. Most of the ones I saw were men and they're like hitchhiking through some desert somewhere and I'm like oh this would feel so unsafe to me as someone perceived female. And obviously they also make lots of content where you know they have lots money because they've been travelling for several months but it has that same fake low budget backpacker vibe.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure it does.

I finished the proposal route of MCLAL Kentin episode 5. It cost me 1.140 AP. I got the illustration. Here is the summary:
(This summary is the sequel of the summary of the positive route episode 4: https://www.tumblr.com/magic-belodie/689922154725326848/i-finished-the-positive-route-of-mclal-kentin)
You start this episode on the road, you just have spotted the hotel. You are happy that you finally arrived. The travel to India was a bit too far for you. You let the dogs out of the van and want to go back inside to put the decorations back in order. You give Kentin stuff to feed the dogs. Then you look into your underwear drawer. The stuff you are hiding didn't move. But Kentin saw you looking into it and asks what kind of decorations you put in there. You say that you wanted to put one of your bras on the wall. Kentin starts to laugh. He will let you choose which one you want to put on the wall. Kentin tells you that the decorations can wait. Then he put the dogs back into the van. You two have to meet your new boss and find out if the hotel accepts dogs.
The hotel looks beautiful and very luxurious. Kentin thinks that there are no dogs allowed inside, but he would love to come here for vacation. You are not sure that you two can afford this hotel. Then Kentin suggests that maybe you two could stay a few days after work. And indeed, you can stay around in the area with the van. But first you need to earn some money. The owner of the hotel; Darma comes towards you. He had spoken with Kentin on the phone. You both shake hands with him. He already knows that you two live in a van. He will make sure that you are okay with the place your fan is staying. Then he tells you about your jobs. Kentin is going to work as a multipurpose outdoor man. He has to help with plants and at the swimming pool. You are going to be joining the multipurpose indoor crew. Generally you are working in the kitchen or serving people. And if the housekeeping crew needs another person, they can ask for you. You both will start tomorrow at eight and get further instructions from your team leader. Further, you don't have any questions. Kentin does, he wants to know if there are severs for the dogs. They have a kennel with a park. It is available for the customers and the people who work at the hotel. Darma goes back to work. You both like your new boss and are excited to go working here. Kentin and you walk back to the van.
Kentin and you make the van ready. You two have been doing this for a year. It has become a routine. Kentin goes to make up the bed while you take care of muffin. He is still a pup, you are training him with treats. The two other dogs start to look at you. You both give them a treat for just this one time, but they have to do a trick for it. They both complete it, while Kentin joyfully watches at them. You put the treats back into the van. The sun starts to settle down. You are all tired and get ready to go to bed. Muffin lies between Joker and Siska. You snuggle into Kentin arms. You all fall a sleep. The next morning, Kentin wakes you up. You all get ready to go to work. While Kentin is in the shower, you check again your underwear drawer. But nothing has moved out of place. You are both excited to start your first day.
At the hotel, a few people are waiting for you. One of them takes the dogs to the kennel. The others are part of both your teams. Your team leader takes you to the kitchen and gives you a uniform. You have done the work before. The morning passes by easily. After your break, you have to bring around snacks outside. Kentin sees you and looks at you, blushing. Your uniform suits you well. Kentin asks you how your morning went. Your team is nice, and the job isn't complicated. Kentin likes it here and his team is nice. You are happy that Kentin enjoys it here. He mostly likes the view of the landscape. You would have liked if Kentin also had a uniform. Kentin likes yours a lot. He hopes they let you keep it. You doubt that. You give everyone their snacks and go back to the kitchen. There you work the rest of the day until Darma comes to look at you. He wanted to know if you were doing good on your first day. You are enjoying it. He also lets you know that all the food that is over doesn't get thrown away. You are allowed to take anything with you. Darma advices you to make a picnic basket ready. He will show you beautiful places to picnic after work. He will meet you at the van. You work the rest of your time and make a picnic basket ready. Then you go back to the van.
At the van, you see Kentin and the dogs. They are all happy to see you. Kentin had seen Darma, he told Kentin that you had a surprise. You show Kentin the basket. He looks hungry at it. But you first have to change. You give Kentin the basket and go into the van. There is only one outfit to choose. Then Darma comes to you with a jeep. Kentin, you and the dogs go into the jeep. He starts to drive to the forest. He would like to see it through your eyes for the first time. Darma asks you what you are passionate about. You are passionate about art. You are having contact with Yael to put up a traveling gallery. Yael and you are both still looking into things. Darma gets a call and has to go back. He will pick you all up later. Kentin, you and the dogs go out of the jeep. You all walk over the path. Trying to find a nice spot for a picnic. After walking for a while, Kentin asks you if you would be able to find the way back to the hotel. You will have to follow the sounds of the stream. Up until now, you have mostly been going west. Kentin is proud of you. And otherwise the dogs could have followed back your scent to the van. Siska has found something, you all follow the dog. He found a carcass. Kentin and you want to go to another place. But then you hear some scary sounds. Turns out it were some monkeys in the trees. You all walk further until you see the sea. There is a cliff with a volcano. The view is beautiful. Kentin wants to go some other day to the volcano. He is so happy seeing this beautiful place and wraps his arms around you. It would be even more romantic at sunset. Maybe you will come back here later. This is the perfect place for a picnic. You all sit down on the ground and eat while enjoying the view. Once you are finished eating, you start to look at Kentin. He is looking at the horizon. You love to see him this way. And are asking your self what he is thinking. You don't want to ask him, you like the mystery. You turn your attention to the landscape. This feels like the moment you have waited for. You are about to say something when one of the dogs barf. All the dogs run back into the forest. Kentin and you go after them. The dogs stopped at a gave. They found there another dog. The dog isn't in a good shape. It seems to be hurting. Kentin gives the dog some food and water. The dog is eating it and that is a good sign. The dog still has to go to the vet. Kentin takes it carefully in his arms. You all walk back to the place where you last saw Darma. He was already waiting for you. You all get into the jeep and drive to the hotel. On the way, Darma calls the vet. She will meet you at the hotel. As soon as you arrive at the hotel, the vet takes the dog with her. Darma gives you two both permission to visit the dog tomorrow morning. He leaves you both alone. Kentin seems worried, you try your best to reassure him. You both get ready to go to bed. While Kentin is in the shower, you look again in your drawer. The ring you brought with you is still lying there. That place you were today would be the perfect place to ask Kentin. You really like to know his answer. But now is not the right the moment. Maybe after a few days, when you all know that the dog is doing okay. You close your drawer. You all go to bed, but have trouble failing a sleep. After lying for a while in Kentin's arms, you finally fall to sleep. The next morning, Kentin goes to the vet while you wait with the dogs. After a few hours, Kentin comes back with the dog. The vet doesn't have much place and since the dog only needs food and rest, she gives him to Kentin to take care of. The story skips a few days. You are settling into a routine and in your break you often go see Kentin. You love to see your loved one in his element. There hasn't been yet a moment to ask your question.
It is the day before you have to leave. Kentin and you are done with work, and walk to the kennel. He is sad to let the little dog go. He has completely health in the meantime. But there is no place for him in the van. You suggest that he could live with cookie and Kentin's parents. But we can't, no for sure if they will like each other. Then Darma comes over. He overheard your conversation and he will adopt the dog. Kentin is very happy with this solution. Darma already came up with a name for the dog, Mujur. It means lucky. Darma came also to see you two about something else. The honeymoon suite needs to be prepared. He asks if you two could do it. And of course you two can. Kentin brings the dogs back to the kennel, and you go to the suit.
The suit looks perfect. There only needs to be taken away some dust and to remake the bed. You start with getting away of the dust. Then Kentin comes into the room. Kentin likes the room a lot, two. He also starts with dusting. You two are done very soon. There is time left for a romantic walk to the cliff where you had the picnic. You go to the van to get your special item, and Kentin goes to get the dogs from the kennel.
At the van, you put the box with the ring in it in your pocket. Kentin and the dogs arrive. You all go into the van. Kentin drives to the same place that Darma dropped you off the other day. Everyone goes out of the van, and you all start walking to the cliff. When you arrive at the place, the sun starts to settle down. The place looks even more beautiful than last time. Kentin asks if you want to sit down. But you prefer to stand. You want Kentin to stand when you ask him. You both look for a while at the view. And then you tell Kentin that there is something you want to ask him. You are having trouble talking. But Kentin suspected something. You have been acting weird since you got here. He asks if you are alright. You go down on one knee. Held out the box to Kentin and opened it. Kentin gets tears in his eyes and a smile on his face. You ask him to say something, please. Kentin's smile goes even wider, and he says that he really wants to say yes. And he wants you to tell something else. Kentin also goes down on one knee and gives you a ring. You can't believe it. The ring looks perfect. Kentin loves you and wondered now that he agreed to marry you, that you also agree to marry him. And yes, of course you want to marry him. Kentin and you stand up. This moment you get the illustration. Kentin puts the ring on your finger. You both feel so happy. You look at Kentin and say joyfully that you two are going to get married. He says the same thing, and then the episode ends.
