We know little about the deep sea environments of the Mesozoic but one place where we can get a glimpse into this world is the Münsterland basin. We have here several localities that preserved shallow and deep water animals side by side, caused by underwater landslides. These carried stuff from the rim of the basin and buried them in the deep with other material that was down there.

Tachynectes here is a very early lanternfish. Flattened lanternfishes are no longer a thing these days and we actually have lanternfishes from these localities that show their photophores preserved. We know where they glowed!

In the Middle Ages, Lüdinghausen was a center for agriculture and craftsmanship, with a strong presence of weavers and leather workers.

Munster was a Hanseatic city. Located north of Germany's Ruhr area, towards the Dutch border. You can see the influence of the Hanseatic league in the architecture of the buildings: the "Step Gables" (trapgevels) can be seen from Amsterdam all the way up to the Eastern parts of the Hanseatic area (modern day Poland).

Filmed right before Easter 2023. The mass in the Cathedral of #Münster #Germany was just finished and the building was filled with smoke particles creating a stunning light display. In the enclosed cathedral garden they were handing people oil and water.

Winterzauber in den Rieselfeldern: Eine weiße Frostschicht bedeckt zurzeit die Landschaft im Münsterland. Häufig ist dies nicht zu sehen.
