#ThrowbackThursday to our threeway collaboration between Floating Points / Eglo Records, James Holden / Border Community and the late great Maallem Mahmoud Guinia, master practitioner of Morocco's Gnawa tradition.
Eglo's 2015 vinyl artefact documenting the Maalem's brief encounter with British electronic music (which led to Floating Point's upbeat Mimoun Marhaba and Holden's trippy Bania) flew out of the door not long after it landed, but we continue to make the digital files available for future generations - including a pair of bonus Holden x Guinia collabs which didn't fit on the original vinyl release.
All royalties go to the Guinia family in Essaouira via the Maalem's sons Hamza and Maalem Houssam Gania, who continue to carry on the Gnawa tradition in their father's footsteps.

"This playlist is about live performances that inspired me. The first one is the most important, we watched the Don Cherry film at home a dozen times, totally in love with how the whole ensemble radiates a humble loving warm energy, the music just flowing with a sort of earnest purity. The same goes for the Terry Riley concert, and I think also the Luke Abbott 'Amphis' film which we shot together in a forest in England. The other films have more obvious, even showy, virtuosity maybe, but it doesn't obscure the purity and focus. So often electronic music has too many safety nets, and because of that loses the exciting, exploratory feeling of really good live music. This is what I wanted to capture with The Animal Spirits - the wildness and surprise that people working together can create, and trying to find the honesty/humbleness that Don & Terry had to make music that communicates with people."
- James Holden curates a playlist of inspiration live performances for Slovenia’s Druga Godba Festival, where he will be performing with The Animal Spirits on 28th May. Featuring Don Cherry, Terry Riley, Mario Batkovic, Laurence Pike, Luke Abbott, Ex-Easter Island Head, Maalem Mahmoud Guinia and Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid.
