Step 1: Purchase a Mac Friendly CAC Reader

Step 2: Plug in and Ensure It’s Accepted

Once you have your CAC reader, plug it into your Mac and ensure your computer recognizes it. If you have one of the CAC readers we suggested above, then you should be good to go.

If for some reason your CAC reader isn’t working, you may need to download the appropriate drivers for your CAC reader. You can find these drivers on the Reader’s Manufacturer Website.

Step 3: Update Your DOD Certificates

Now that you have your CAC reader connected and accepted on your Mac computer, it’s time to ensure you have the right certificates in order to access DOD CAC required web pages.

Now that you have a CAC reader, certificates, and a CAC Enabler, you should now be able to access any CAC-enabled website and log on using your CAC password and data.

Ensure Your CAC Card Meets the Standards: In order for your CAC card to work, it must meet the minimal requirements. Currently, there are only four types of CAC cards that can be used. Bis auf Werbeeinblendungen haben Nutzer im Vergleich zum kostenpflichtigen Kaspersky-Programm praktisch keine Nachteile. Noch besser als der Testsieger schützt Bitdefender Internet Security, das ab 25 Euro pro Jahr zu haben ist. Die etwas schwächere Gesamtnote 1,7 hat die Antiviren-Software einer minimal stärkeren Rechner-Belastung zu verdanken. Schlechter als gut bewerteten die Prüfer alleine Microsofts vorinstallierten Windows Defender, der das Qualitätsurteil 3,1 erhielt. Warentest attestiert ihm immer aber noch eine "passable" Schutzwirkung. Dass das Programm keine Phishing-Abwehr bietet, ist nur ein Problem, wenn man keinen Browser mit dieser Funktion nutzt. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox und Microsoft Edge haben sie integriert und standardmäßig aktiviert. Zusatz-Schutz für Macs Mehr zum Thema Phishing ist auch im Prinzip der einzige Grund, weshalb Stiftung Warentest Mac-Nutzern die Installation einer Antiviren-Software empfiehlt. Ansonsten seien Apples Computer von Haus aus gut gegen Malware geschützt, da macOS kaum Schnittstellen biete, über die Schädlinge angreifen können, schreiben die Prüfer. Im Test-Zeitraum entdeckten sie auch keine relevanten Webseiten mit macOS-Schadprogrammen. Wer auf seinem Apple-Rechner trotzdem ein Antiviren-Programm installieren möchte, ist mit Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac (20 Euro/Jahr), F-Secure Safe (30 Euro) und Kaspersky Internet Security (40 Euro) gut bedient, die alle drei die Gesamtnote 2,1 erhielten. Auf dem zweiten Platz landete das kostenlose AVG Antivirus Free mit dem Qualitätsurteil 2,4.
