News For A Week Write-Up
Macon is a damn dangerous place, and Maconites don’t like to admit it to themselves.
That is the main thing I’ve learned from watching the local news for the past week. Small reports of shootings and robberies always highlight the more quick, bullet point-esque sections of the local news each night. It also seems that Macon newsviewers enjoy being informed about anyone’s charity work. There were several news stories about charity work being done in the community, and they were often used as the “ads” for the next segment, or the little previews used to attract the viewers attention to keep watching before a commercial. Charity work included volunteer work as substitute teachers and looots of packing meals for families in need. Macon and its population also like to focus on sports a lot, if anything is to be learned from the nightly news. Sports always took a prime spot in the news at one point or another, varying from high school sports to the all-encompassing Southern tradition of College Football, the latter of which enveloped the newscast from the latter half of the week that I watched because of UGA’s big game against (and subsequent loss at the hands of) Alabama. The upcoming Secretary of State Runoff that occurs tomorrow has also been a hot topic, showing that Macon has some political strain on it as well, especially since the Abrams v Kemp race, which is often routinely brought up despite it being old news. This is all stuff I had an idea about from living in Macon for so many years, but I had never really thought terribly hard about until actually watching the nightly news and trying to glean information from it. It was actually a fairly interesting experiment to try and gain info about my town from a sort of outside perspective. 13WMAZ’s newscasts were sort of dull, but when looking at them within the scope of the picture, I learned alot about how Macon deceives itself and tries to convince itself of its safety and kindness by avoiding certain stories.

The Role of Media
The Macon Telegraph is undeniably an essential newspaper for Maconites. As its name goes, “Macon Telegraph”, the newspaper covers local news. It also has sections for national news and worldwide news, but for me the local news is the main and major part of this newspaper, simply because it is meant as a local news outlet for the Macon-Bibb County. National news has been covered by various big newspapers, so the Macon Telegraph’s best strategy to gain readers is to deliver local news for local readers. It is a small newspaper, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Everything has its place in this world, and I believe this is particularly true for the role of the Macon Telegraph.
I have just come to Macon for nearly four months until now. But I feel I have gained a bit knowledge of this city thanks to the Macon Telegraph. The newspaper delivers news about what has happened in the Macon-Bibb County. They have journalists in charge of different focuses. Among the news during a day, a large proportion of them are crime news, which indicates to me that the safety of this area is still at an alarming level. They cover news about plans initiated by the Macon-Bibb County commission. I remember the plan for the Little Richard’s house was a big issue during October. There were objections and approvals for the plan, which was why it took so much to settle down the issue and come to a compromise between two groups. For a foreigner to Macon like me, the Macon Telegraph was so helpful in explaining the background of the Little Richard’s house, the I-16/I-75 Interchange Project which really enabled me to grasp the whole problem. The Macon Telegraph plays a significant role in connecting people to the happenings of their community. I said people because not only the Maconites can learn about their communal issues and civic problems but foreigners can also grab a sense of what the Macon community is experiencing.
I think the Macon Telegraph, and other local news outlet like the 13WMAZ, is like the vein that connects the heart and other important parts. The newspaper serves as an announcer to people about the events around them. Always knowing what is going on reminds people that they are part of this community, which will strengthen their sense of belonging and deepening their bond of love for other residents.
I like the 13WMAZ’s slogan, which goes “Straight from the Heart”. I think they have understood their role as the voice of people. They want to deliver truthful news and represent the genuine opinion of the residents around Central Georgia. I think this is marvellously important because these newspapers can create a wave of influence that imposes a great strength and pressure on those in power. Reflecting honest thoughts of the residents is the only way for authorities and those with communal responsibilities to respond correctly to the needs of their people.
The Macon Telegraph delivers news about the current problems around Macon, revolving around the high crime rate, low education level, employment issues, taxes, budgets. I like that I learnt about so many problems that the community and authorities have to deal with because it made me realize that everywhere always has a problem of themselves. Rich cities, poor cities never cease to be faced with problems of all sorts. But the large amount of news about the problems around this area also highlights the community’s high awareness of their well-being. It clearly proves that the Maconites are serious about where they live, about their home, about their lives in this area. If they don’t have a strong connection to their vicinity, they won’t demand so much effort dedicated to make changes here and there for the greater good. As such, I think it is necessary for the newspaper and media to constantly update people on the issues and problems around so that they have plans and purposes to improve their community.
Media has a substantial influence on the way people think. People receive information, news and knowledge from media, therefore it is inherently conducive to the establishment of media’s role as an orientation for people’s mind. With this substantial role, media should be an unbiased party that can shape people’s thoughts in the correct perspective. The Macon Telegraph reports authorities’ opinions that explain why they object this, support that. But it never colours anyone in an unfair light that would cause misunderstanding and spread unnecessary hate. I think that is what media should strive for. However, conflicts of opinions are unavoidable. But perspectives are endlessly convoluted and intertwined that they make the decision to follow a certain opinion such a rigorous process of determining. Newspapers and media try to alleviate this pain of thinking correctly by trying to report as truthfully as possible, but sometimes that even brings a backward effect. I think this is a big problem that every journalist or media expert has their own answer.

Government agents lured a drug dealer to the park in front of the White House to buy crack for a prop in President Bush's televised speech on drugs, a move the President testily defended today. (...)
The Post story detailed a plan that began when White House speech writers decided it would be dramatic if the President held up a plastic bag of crack in his Sept. 5 address on drug strategy from the Oval Office. The President liked the idea.So in his speech, President Bush held up a clear plastic bag labeled ''evidence'' and said it was crack that had been ''seized a few days ago in a park across the street from the White House.''
But the three ounces of crack was bought for $2,400, not seized, at 11:30 A.M. on Sept. 1.

Review the Macon Action Plan and write an essay about the problems it's addressing and how it plans to ameliorate them
The 2015 version of the Macon Action Plan (MAP) calls it “a comprehensive, community-driven plan that envisions the future of Macon’s historic downtown and intown neighborhoods.” By this, the people in charge mean that all members of the Macon community were invited to contribute ideas and feedback regarding the issues they identified in the area and solutions to combat what they saw.
The MAP was written by members of the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority, Macon-Bibb County and other partners.
The Executive Summary of the MAP highlights the main points the plan hopes to address. These include revitalization of the Beall’s Hill neighborhood, more city-college collaboration in Mercer Village, new lofts and businesses in College Hill and downtown, entrepreneurial initiatives “focused on urban vitality and economic development,” landscaping improvements such as those that spurred the 2nd Street Corridor and a plan to expand the Ocmulgee National Monument to Ocmulgee Mounds National Park.
These points relate back to many of the things we have discussed and learned from community members in Macon. For example, the man who spoke at Macon CVB told us that the face of tourism is changing in Macon and that this industry is one we hope to grow. He mentioned that if the Ocmulgee National Monument were to become a designated National Park, it would increase tourism and federal funding. The lady who spoke at the Ocmulgee National Monument when we visited as a class showed us a map of the proposed expansion and also talked about how a bigger, more important designation would be good for the city economically and historically, as Maconites are proud to preserve the history and culture of the area.
The plan also related back to the 2nd Street Corridor project in terms of beautification and improvements for parts of the city that have been neglected and are central to the parts of town which might attract more tourists: downtown areas and areas close to our medical centers, since the man at Macon CVB said medical tourism is growing in the city.
The part about entrepreneurship and the College Hill Alliance as well as furthering collaboration in Mercer Village was very relevant to me as a Mercer student. I know that Mercer Village was created by a group of senior Service Scholars several years ago who had some of the same goals in mind as are written in the MAP -- they wanted to bridge the gap between the community and the college while alleviating economic distress in the area. They opened up opportunities for Maconites and students alike to establish, maintain and enjoy entrepreneurial efforts like local restaurants and coffee shops alongside student living and our Mercer Bookstore.
That isn’t the only example in the plan of merging student and resident life, which is an important factor for bringing new, relatively affluent people to Macon to help alleviate economic issues. Attracting students with the new Lofts in College Hill and downtown alongside businesses is a great way to promote the success of Macon owned businesses and therefore increase Macon’s general economy. An influx of students and their visiting families would also support Macon as a whole.
The summary refers to the places most affected by the MAP’s changes as the “Urban Core,” which they define as Macon’s downtown and nearby neighborhoods: the areas in which the city was established and where remains a hub of employment, entertainment and institutions as well as historic sites and neighborhoods. This is the heart of Macon, nestled between I-75, the Ocmulgee National monument, Little Richard Penniman Boulevard and Emery Highway.

Macon Beer Company
Yash Patel first started brewing at age 13.
While his dad was pretty happy about that, mom...not so much. However, since the brewing bug hit him quickly, he has spent a lot of time brewing beer. So it only made sense for him to take over ownership of Macon Beer company, central Georgia's first craft brewery.
We talk to Yash, a native Maconite, about his beers, the growing craft beer scene in Macon, and his ideas behind brewing beer.

News Organization Essay
Macon’s news and writing community is a small but strong one. Few mid-major towns in the country, let alone Georgia, have the bragging rights and news accolades to put themselves on the same level being occupied by Macon in recent years. Between the rise and growth of Mercer’s Center for Collaborative Journalism, the widespread news coverage of the Macon Telegraph, statewide impact of the on-campus GPB Radio headquarters, and the large variety of other news organizations dominating Macon, the city has had a lot to talk about journalistically. After visiting some news organizations in Macon, it has become obvious how much impact they have on the community.
13WMAZ is Macon’s premier television news outlet, airing nightly news every day on the local ABC 16 channel and covering everything from politics to sports with admirable fervor. I visited the station a while back and looked at some of their equipment, and saw the sheer amount of work and brainpower that goes into each and every broadcast. Aside from the size and brawn showcased within the studio, it was also impressive how impactful the news channel really is in Macon. Broadcast reporters like Ben Jones and Marvin James are legitimate figures of importance in Macon, drawing conversation and eyes in public places and sparking talk over local news stories. 13WMAZ is far and away the most seen and most often used news source amongst Maconites, especially since they have expanded to catering to internet users and have wrapped their hands around the social media game. It seems that the most impactful news source by far after research and visits is 13WMAZ.
However, impact in terms of providing news is not the only measure or gauge of community presence that can be applied to a news outlet. History, community engagements and reporting quality are factors that should not be forgotten and, in fact, should be held in high regard when assessing a news crew’s impact on a local populous.  When it comes to these factors, The Telegraph is nearly unrivaled in local impact and news prowess. The Telegraph’s editors and reporters are amongst the best in the state, with the newspaper housing the likes of Ed Grisamore, Tim Regan-Porter as editor, and crime reporter Joe Kovac. The Telegraph is also well known for acquiring numerous big names in journalism for local involvement and events. In addition to the much higher quality of stories and media at the Telegraph, the newspaper also involves itself in the community much more heavily than other local news organizations. The Telegraph offices are housed directly next to Mercer’s burgeoning Center for Collaborative Journalism, and as a result is directly involved with students aspiring to impact their community and become journalists in the modern area. These interactions include editing advice (the precedent under which I myself visited the Telegraph), article-writing opportunities, and access to inside news information and events. Another of the Telegraph’s enticing aspects is its rich history: it is the oldest news outlet in Macon by far, and as a result is a fixture of any important event in Macon and acts as one of the most reliable news sources in the community. Telegraph articles often spark thoughtful discussions and provide useful information to the public. These features and qualities are what make the Telegraph one of the most influential news organizations in the Macon community.
Visiting these two news organizations further informed me about the impact of news on the community in which I have lived all of my life. Seeing the amount of work and effort that goes into the news was astounding, and reviewing how widespread and well-known the two organizations are was a refresher on how much they truly mean in the Macon community. These organizations clearly have a renewed influence on Macon in the form of social media and web surfing, and still maintain the print and television impacts that they previously held. They interact with the community via events and in-depth reporting, and overall act as huge, looming figures in Macon.

Interviewing Important Maconites  x2
When our class went to the Mayor’s Office, it was pretty cool to talk to the Mayor and his Press person about how they interact with the community. Conversation focused more on the development of a transportation unit through second street, intending to connect downtown Macon with I-75 more easily. This route improvement is intended to bring business back to what is actually considered Downtown Macon. This also is suppose to increase tourist attractiveness to Macon itself, hopefully bringing a wider variety of people to Macon, aside from college students at Mercer or Wesleyan, and the typical Maconites.
Another group of important people interviewed was the people at Macon CVB. These people were able to present to us about all the important things that occur in Macon. Most of this conversation stemmed around tourism within the city. It was interesting to see that even though Macon is along I-75, the city still is not a big tourist destination. The city, however, receives most of its tourism during Cherry Blossom Festival, which had just finished the week or two earlier. The festival brings in lots of tourists, whether it be for the fun and games, the music, or the artwork. The festival encourages businesses to mingle and interact more with the Macon community. The festival also acts as means for attracting people to learn more about the city of Macon.
Interviewing these city officials helped familiarize myself with Macon and what the typical events are, as well as see the city officials’ plans for the future of Macon.
