Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
The tiger moth doesn’t roar, but it can squeak! Also known as garden tigers or woolly bears, this species wards off bats by emitting an ultrasonic click, which tells potential predators that they don’t taste good and jams their echolocation.

Buff-tip (Phalera bucephala). by Bob Eade A similar image to one I did last year. However, this one the eyes are showing, and they are lower in the head than I was expecting. I can't recall being able to see the eyes on any other shot I've taken of this species. The scales on the wings of this species are quite large and it is worth viewing larger to really see the scales. https://flic.kr/p/2kZV5Zm

Eight-Spotted Forester Moth (Alypia octomaculata) at my parents' farm. These day-flying Moths drink nectar from flowers and lay their eggs on Virginia Creeper and Grape plants, where their larvae feed. These Moths spend the Winter in their cocoons, hidden in wood crevices or soil. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #eightspottedforester #eightspottedforestermoth #mothstagram #dayflyingmoth #mothsarebeautiful #macromoth #lepidopteraofinstagram #norfolkwild #norfolkcountyontario #blognorfolk #invert_macro #insects_of_our_world #naturephotograph (at Norfolk County, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEMZ7Dnobs/?igshid=chyiox850fhj

Merveille du jour (Griposia aprilina). by Bob Eade The beautiful Merveille du Jour moth. The first I have seen in Seaford and was a great start to the day. Having emptied the moth trap and found little of interest I found this guy nearby, obviously attracted to the garden by the trap light. The name translates to 'Wonder of the day' and certainly lived up to that name yesterday!! https://flic.kr/p/2jN5aXW

Small Eggar larva (Eriogaster lanestris). by Bob Eade Fully grown Small Eggar larva. One of the best looking larvae and a very rare find in East Sussex. This species is now thought to be extinct in West Sussex and was only known from one small area in East Sussex until I found a colony on my own patch 4 years ago in the shape of a larval web. Each year since I have found at least 2 webs with 3 in 2019 and this larva well away from any of the webs. As far as I am aware an adult moth of this species has not been seen in Sussex for around 10 years, so I guess I have that target to go for, although with the flight season being February and March I could struggle. https://flic.kr/p/2ikdLBu

Puss Moth (Cerura vinula). by Bob Eade Male. This is only the 2nd Puss Moth I have seen before. I have been hoping to find the famous caterpillar before but have been unlucky with this. I have planted a Willow in the garden hoping to attract a female to lay eggs on it, but of course, this male won't help with that!! https://flic.kr/p/2ghf755

Peppered moth larva (Biston betularia). by Bob Eade This is as close as I will ever get to photographing Twiggy!! Whilst searching for Hawk-moth larva on Sallow, I suddenly spotted this very well camouflaged larva pretending to be a twig. https://flic.kr/p/PQ4S9W

Beautiful Yellow Underwing larva (Arnata myrtilli). by Bob Eade Ashdown Forest. The larva of the Beautiful Yellow Underwing moth feeding amongst the Heather. This species is specialist on heathland and is quite scarce in Sussex. Three larva were found on a large patch of Heather. Here it is seen in its defense posture as it realised there was something very strange about!! http://ift.tt/2xgpqyi
