Little dinosaur for my friend!!!
Now I want to make a rainbow patchwork one, an LGBT rex (I just gotta figure out the right distribution of colors so it reads as stripes? I can split it into eight colors pretty easily but two colors would only be the arms and legs)

it's always so much fun to make OC plushies. this lovely lad was a different body type than I was used to, so I got to do some fun pattern hacking so he'd be more accurate to the original design.

I've shared these on my Instagram, but I also wanna share them here b/c I'm pretty proud of my plushies and I spent a lot of time on them at the end of last year! More pictures of the details n words below the cut!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay last one promise! This was for a friend, but also a good test of Cholyknight's chibi doll patterns for myself! (That one costs money but it's well worth it!!!) The embroidery for the face came out really good!!! I think the ears were initially bigger than I intended and I was at a point where I couldn't undo them, but it worked out really well in the end! A lot of the base clothes and hair all came with the patterns, but I adjusted the mohawk to fit his face better, using a darker grey to show it was shaved, and I tried to detail his shoes a little more to look like sneakers. The horns I took an existing horn pattern and adjusted it to be Mallek's, though the piercings I struggled for a time before settling on stitched pieces of fabric. The piercings above the eye on the brow are hand down embroidery, which works well enough!
I'm actually super proud of the hoodie; the symbol is embroidered!!!! I made it into an embroidery design and did that myself!!!! With like, a free to use program but STILL!!! And then the hood can go on his head bc there's holes for horns!!! Actually incredibly tricky for a first attempt of that hood, but I got it!!! Also all the clothes? Easy to slip on and off! Though maybe I should've sewn the shoes in bc they fall a little too easy… but my friend really likes it so that's what counts ❤
Also it's also completely made of fleece! Minus the lining in the hood of course; since it's fleece though, there's no shirt under the hoodie bc it wouldn't fit right, but I sewed in a little bit of blue to give the illusion of a shirt xD

I made a Snapper Plush using a pattern modified from Sew Desu Ne! See under cut for the pattern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Partially based on my Snapper Feeder. Was going off of vibes when I was creating them, so the colours aren't 1 to 1. I did get a bit too ambitious with extra details (body spikes, chin spikes, toes) so those were cut. The design uses the hatchling head and F pose wings.
My progress pics while creating are here.
And now, the sewing pattern:
I modified Cholyknight's / Sew Desu Ne's Bulbasaur pattern to make the head and body. Below are my additions for the wings, tail, horns and spikes. My version is bigger, so this one scales down to fit the pattern instructions on site.
I've also added the unused parts for anyone who wants to give it a shot. The pages are letter size, so it's print ready! Use parts A, C, F, E, G and H for the head and body. The ears (B,D) will be replaced with my horn design
Please do not sell for profit. If you post your plush online, credit Cholyknight and I. Feel free to show off your creations in this thread.

Hi sporks! This is kiiinda a weird ask but do you have any ideas/resources for beginners learning to sew?
I know you've been at it for awhile, and idk where else to look lol
Oooo, okay, so I have Resources for Free Patterns
CholyKnight has a bunch of free patterns, and they're also rated by difficulty, so you can find ones that work for your skill level. There's also some explanations of how to do sewing stuff like darts and whatnot. Definitely great for beginners.
Mood Sewcity, more free patterns
Free Sewing, Patterns, these you can adjust with your measurements
Fleece Fun, these are relatively simple. It's where I got my cloak pattern. You do have to sign up for emails, but lots of patterns for free, and fleece is relatively inexpensive. Fleece is pretty good for starters, too, because it's a relatively strong fabric that doesn't fray but isn't too thick to sew through
As far as actual resources for learning, I don't really have much because I was taught to sew by my older sister and my mom, and I figured most other stuff out on my own. So I made some short things of basic stitching stuff
Tumblr media
This one is called a running stitch. It's the first one I learned, and is really easy. Just back and forth through the fabric. I made the stitches pretty big here and in opposite colors from the cloth for visual reasons, but you want to pick thread closer to your cloth color, and the smaller your stitches are, the stronger they'll be. There is an exception to this, it's called "basting" and it's basically doing the running stitch but really big and loose. It's supposed to be temporary and just holds pieces in place until you do something else
Tumblr media
This is just a way to anchor your running stitch with a knot. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do this, but I'm paranoid about my stitches coming out, and when you're doing it by hand as a beginner, they probably WILL come out, so. Yeah.
Tumblr media
This one's called a "whip stitch" (I learned recently. I've been doing it for ages, didn't know the name). You're basically popping the edges together and sewing in little circles around them.
Tumblr media
This one is a ladder stitch/slip stitch/invisible stitch, and I'm doing it kind of messily here, but the objective is to make your stitch invisible when you pull it tight. You're sort of sewing on the "inside" of the fabric, folding it over and making the thread go behind the fold so it's hidden, then pulling it over to the other side. I use this one to close up my plushies mostly.
Other Random Tips and Stuff:
A "seam allowance" is how much extra cloth you can put on the other side of the seam
You don't need a special cutting board/table for your fabric, I literally just use the floor or the kitchen table
Tacky glue is great for tiny pieces you don't want to sew, like eye shines. It does take some time to dry, though. I put books on top of the fabric to press it together. It will wash out, though, so don't use it on things you intend to throw in the wash
Get pretty good at hand sewing before you try messing with a sewing machine
Fabric scissors really do make a difference in cutting from regular scissors
If you look up "free fabric samples" a lot of cloth places will send you a few little squares of fabric. These are great for practicing and also figuring out different materials, and you don't have to pay for them
Felt is also pretty inexpensive and you can get it at most craft stores, even if they don't sell fabric by the yard. It's also good for details on plushies, like eyes. It is scratchy, though.
Pins are very helpful, but watch out because they will stab you
Little details and things are usually easier to sew by hand rather than machine, especially if there's curves on it. It's just not worth the hassle.
If you're making a plushie, pull the stuffing apart before you stuff it, or the stuffing isn't as soft/it clumps up.
Don't start with a huge major sewing clothes project. My first sewing stuff was making dresses for my barbies when I was 10 and they were literally just tubes with straps on them. I was pleased with this. Trying a big project first will probably just be frustrating, so get used to basic sewing stuff first.
Yeah, I think that's most of it! Let me know if you have any other questions or let me know what you end up making! Other sewing people feel free to add on

(apologies if this has been asked before you know how tumblr search is) I was wondering if you had any advice at all on getting into making plushies? If not it’s no worries and I would like to say that all your plushies are really wonderful!
Hiii, thank you so much!
I'd recommend watching this video from MakeShift wings; https://youtu.be/XPmVyaOeN0c?si=l1rnYvowD33dIJYO she gives a lot of advice for beginners!
When I was starting out I also learned a lot from this free PDF made by CholyKnight; she shares a lot of tips and techniques and walks you thru making a simple plush https://cholyknight.com/2022/01/14/starter-pack-plush/
My personal bits of advice are as follows:
I'd recommend starting out making plushies with pre-made patterns; make sure the patterns have written instructions with photos at the start
Use a lot of sewing pins. Trust me. I am serious
Get the feel of whatever fabric you are working with; it's plushies you are very likely ending up with minky; learn how it feels, which direction the fur goes into, learn the texture (it's stretchy and slippery so it gets a bit to get used to)
This is a very very muscle memory-based skill/hobby IMO. Once you sew a certain shape enough times you will learn and it will look better!
Making your own patterns is very difficult and time and resource-consuming; of course, there will be times when you want to branch off into your own projects then pattern drafting and repetition are the key (altho it is a very different beast and it is going to be a very personal thing in how you approach shapes)
Don't worry about tools when starting out; this can get very expensive very fast and if you don't find the motion and the process it could become a money sink hole unfortunately; try with small amounts of fabric and things like painting or safety eyes (tho if you commit to this and want to buy a sewing machine i do recommend that you get one that is both an embroidery unit and an embroidery machine in one go if machine embroidery is something you have interest in)
DON'T GIVE UP!! Take a look at my very first plushie I've ever made and then the remake from one year later!

Hi, I really love the plushies you made of RoR Captain and Bandit! I would like to ask how did you get into making plushies like them: where did you learn to make them (like tutorials or something like that), what materials do you use, etc. I would love to make my own plushies in the future! Thank you in advance!
I got into plushie making bc i could never stand my grandma wasting material, lmao. i learned from online tutorials and there was this one website run by a person called "CholyKnight" who offered TONS of free patterns and beginner friendly stuff! her patterns hold up even when you have three years of experience like me--whetehr youre new to the business or old, shes got something for you. as for what i use, i use fleece to make my plushies. its cheap and easy to work with and you only have to worry about the right and wrong sides, not that its going to have a weird texture because you didnt perfectly align it with the seam.
heres a link to cholyknight's free pattern page. I think you'll find a lot of good stuff here :) she even has a beginner guide for people who have never worked a sewing machine!

Hi there! I'm just getting into sewing as a hobby, and I was wondering if you have any recommendations for where to buy fabric? I want to get into plushie making, so something like minky fabric or other soft (non-felt) options are what I'm looking for. I live in a pretty remote area so I don't have any fabric or craft stores close by, and I'm unsure of where to start shopping online! Any recommendations for shops that have good quality fabric at a decent price?
Hi! All my answers are US-based because I am, but I'll include a link to Cholyknight's fabric recs as well because she has some other options Okay I just went to get that link and it turns out since the last time I shared it she's updated it to include my favorite online minky store (CaliQuiltCo) so I'd just use her link, with two caveats: Joann's fabric is great in person if you have one locally, but their online inventory control system is SO BAD (which means they will sometimes cancel part of your order without warning and not let you cancel the rest of it, leaving you with half the supplies for a specific project) Additionally, I would avoid the "sew lush" fabrics from Joanns. Minky can be a little tricky to work with for beginners, and the sew lush version takes every negative thing about minky and makes it exponentially more difficult. This is a personal grudge against the fabric, it might not be universal, but I find it so ridiculously slippery and it's the only minky/faux fur I've ever, ever worked with that unravels at the edges. It's knit! It shouldn't fray but it does! It both sheds and frays, and it's regrettable because Joanns does have some very cute patterns in their sew lush stuff Other plushie specific advice: - if you want to learn how to use plushie sewing patterns, start here with Cholyknight's free plushie pattern pack. I have free patterns too, but hers are a lot more beginner friendly and explain how to actually use a pattern - Fleece is cheaper than minky but usually has a similar amount of stretch, so patterns designed for one can almost always be made using the other - if there are no craft stores near you but there's a dollar store or general store of some kind, you could try getting a fleece or like short pile faux fur blanket? The ones near me usually have cheap like throw sized blankets for anywhere between 5-20 dollars, and you can make a lot of plushies from a throw sized blanket

Want somewhere to start?
I can't recommend enough cholyknights tutorials and patterns! They even have a guide for absolute beginners(which includes basic hand stitches and terms)
Want something simpler? could I interest you in a frog or perhaps a mouse?
Don't own a printer? Neither do I! I've just been eyeballing patterns for like 4 years!(you shouldn't do this)
Other things I recommend?
Literally just going on YouTube and searching sewing for beginners.
Anyways you should learn how to sew even if you just learn the basic stitches. do you know how nice it is to be able to repair torn clothes and stuffed animals nicely?

This was actually quite a fun plushie to work on, even if the embroidery was a little more challenging! Sylveon doesn't have a lot of hard pieces but there's more to embroider than expected so it took time! And once again, attaching the head to the body is always a little tricky, and thus, the head tilt LOL
I didn't quite have the similar fleece for the darker blue but overall it came out great! My mom actually really liked this out of all that I made lol but I promised I'll make her a vaporeon later. My friend thought I initially bought it though, so I think that means I did a pretty good job if I do say so myself!
This pattern btw is 100% free on cholyknight's website!!!! A part of me kind wants to make a whole set of eeveelutions and then cosplay a pokemon breeder LOL! My parents n cousins said I could sell them but idk; I know cholyknight allows you to do that, but this is a hobby if anything. Plus, idk how to price anyway xD

hello!!! do you have any tips for learning to sew? eventually i want to be able to make my own stuffed animals, especially things like the memory bears you made. i just taught myself yesterday and today I successfully (ish) lined a bag i crocheted!
Hi!! Lining a crocheted bag with fabric is (in my opinion) significantly more difficult than sewing basic plushies, so you're already off to a fantastic start! I cannot recommend Cholyknight's starter pack plush pattern highly enough for learning how to sew. It's totally free, and it walks you through learning to sew one plushie at a time. There are four levels of pattern complexity, so it starts very very simple and then you learn new techniques as you make new plushies. By the end, I think you'd have all the skills you need to sew teddy bears like the memory bears I made

I got into sewing because I saw your cat post and now I've made a little beanie baby creature and have a bunch of material to make even more, what do you have to say for yourself??? (thank you btw because your post said "I forgot how easy it was" and I fully believed you and it IS and it's so fun and I love this new hobby :))
I'm so glad you're having fun sewing!! It's such a fun hobby and it's really cool to like have the idea to make a creature and then ta-dah! the creature is made now! it exists as a physical object!! If you're just starting out sewing and looking for some free beginner-friendly patterns, sewdesune (aka CholyKnight) has a lot of them. I mean, if you followed that cat pattern, you're probably fine to follow most patterns because that one isn't super beginner friendly, but if you (or anyone else) are looking for some free really well explained patterns there's a link
If you're looking for less well explained patterns, I've also shared a bunch of free plushie sewing patterns I designed here on tumblr! I don't have the digital art skills to make them look pretty or to explain super clearly, but if you have some experience making plushies they should work, and I can answer questions if you have questions Also, I love searching for patterns. If there's a particular plushie sewing pattern you're looking for, I might have a link for you (or you might inspire me to write a pattern for that plushie myself and share it)
