Everything happened so fast; one moment, I was in my bed, and in the next, I was on my chair exposed to a stranger. I flinched at the feeling of his fingers under my chin, recoiling my head back in response. Trying to better look at the man, I couldn't make out much besides confirming he had a deep voice and appeared relatively tall.

My mind was racing so much that I resorted to closing my eyes to calming down, trying to assess my situation best. The money? Oh, he was referring to the now half-empty suitcase wedged under my bed. Realizing my mouth was still partially open, I let out a small grumble of disagreement.

“I, I don't have your money...I'm sorry, sir. You must have the wrong apartment." I stammered, trying my best to speak with composure.

"Oh, is that so? Please excuse me for my mistake." Taehyung bowed at you and turned away, walking to the door. Quick as a flash, he whirled back, flicking his long, elegant hands: one throwing knife flew just under your ear, snipping off a lock of hair, and another one shot past your neck, grazing the skin.

"I told you not to try anything smart, but that wasn't an invitation to try something idiotic." His deep voice was cold enough to send chills down your spine and his sharp eyes turned steely. "You just insulted me thrice: one, by taking my money; two, by lying to me; and three, by implying that I'm stupid enough to fall for your amateur theater act."

"Let me clarify, I'm not some petty neighborhood thug. I'm the leader of an organized crime ring, so by picking up my money, you've landed into very dangerous territory. And if you can't return it?" He shook his head, clicking his tongue.

Twirling another knife, he walked close to you then flicked a knife at your top, deepening the neckline. "Selling pieces of you to recoup my loss would be so stereotypically crude, so I hope you won't leave me with that choice, sweetheart. I so hate dealing with perverts and unscrupulous moneyed folk who think they're above everyone else." he drawled with mock remorse. "Now use that pretty little head of yours and answer: where's my money?"

In June, 1775, a year before it took up the issue of drafting a Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress appointed George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Following the victory of the fledgling nation Washington was unanimously elected by the electoral college to serve as its first president. Growing up on the outskirts of Washington DC, Mark Paul Deren, aka Madsteez, overcame being born blind in one eye to develop a global reputation for his “vivid, large-scale, multi-layered paintings, where strange and familiar figures are integrated into abstract landscapes.” Returning to the city of his childhood for the Pow!Wow! Washington DC 2017 festival, Madsteez created this unique Florida Ave. portrait of the man eulogized as “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”  @madsteez  @powwowdc
