For the colour analysis event: Porco

Porco Galliard

Since color assignment is my job for this one, I say that bronze in Porco's color. Not some brown but metallic bronze (a lot of connotations would be pulled from the metal itself).

The most obvious one - the bronze color symbolizes achievement and success, mirroring Porco's notable feats on the battlefield. However, there's a nuanced negativity inherent in this association, as bronze, despite its connotations, is preceded by two other metals/colors in superiority. This echoes Porco's experience of being sidelined in favor of Reiner, who was thought to be better at the time.

Diving deeper into the symbolism of achievement, the color/metal bronze carries strong war associations, owing to its historical use in offensive weapons and armor. This quality resonates with Porco's character, particularly evident in his frequent involvement in battle scenes. The bronze effectively underscores his role as a Warrior and Titan wielder, highlighting his combat prowess and formidable abilities.

Hence, the branching connotations of stability and security associated with bronze. While traditionally a color with militaristic associations, bronze also embodies a grounding sentiment akin to the comforting aspects of brown (since bronze is merely a metallic off-shoot of brown). This connection reflects Porco's role as a defender often seen coming to the aid of his comrades on the battlefield, particularly Reiner. Yet this comforting aspect can also expand beyond the battlefield, evident in the way Porco took care of his juniors.

Despite that, bronze can't help but retain its metallic nature and thus boldness. This aspect is indicative of Porco's personality, as he wears his heart on his sleeve and fearlessly voices his discontent (especially if the target of his quips happens to be Reiner). What's even more fascinating is how this boldness, if in excess, mirrors Porco's pride and boastfulness. In that sense, bronze emphasizes his arrogance, as seen in his ill-conceived confidence that he was impervious to the attacks of the Scouts, a notion that soon proved incorrect. But at the same time, this boastful outlook ultimately defines his final moments, as his last words reflect his commanding confidence in his superiority over Reiner.

All in all, I believe that the bronze color is a pretty good choice for someone like Porco, considering the unfortunate brevity of his appearances (half of that being in his Titan form.) Not only does it touch upon the combat aspects, but also slightly touches upon his relationship dynamics with Reiner which is a plus, considering that this is the major role of Porco's character in the plot.

Funny you should ask because yellow is one of Reiner's "official" colors (the runner-up being orange) and I also tend to color code Reiner with yellow so let's work from from that.

Just like I've mention while discussing Zeke, yellow can be charged with both positive and negatives connotations which represent Reiner's development as a character. The virtues being the positivity, amusement and humor it represents - much like Reiner's outer facade when he was a Cadet, always cheering his comrades up and taking on a role of an older brother for everyone (not to mention the jokes he was making about asses and stuff). Meanwhile, the negative aspects of the color being deception and falsehood - again, resonating strongly with Reiner's experience of hiding his real identity and lying to his comrades about him being the Armoured Titan. This whole duplicity of color yellow perfectly describes Reiner's whole identity, the paragon of a perfect soldier he was trying to portray to the other and how it turned out to be a lie after all.

Another interesting duplicity that the color yellow includes is the fear/bravery dichotomy. The fear being the more popular interpretation of the either (hence the adjective "yellow-bellied"), it plays into Reiner's initial terror-inducing experience on the Island of discovering the unsettling truth about his unjustified instalment as a warrior followed by witnessing Marcel's death and then running away in fear without attempting to help. And yet - yellow was thought to be a color of courage in the Empire of Japan. It is the color of warriors, the very person Reiner has strived to be his whole life and eventually become by the end of the story as he helps in stopping the Rumbling.

One of the main ways that this color can influence people is its ability to cheer, instill optimistic thoughts. And even though it's not really representative in Reiner's personality but it is evident in the way he influences the people around him - first, it was Scouts, then the kids of the Warrior Unit.

All in all, yellow is a very fitting color for Reiner. Not only does it encompass his positive traits, but simultaneously cover the negative aspects of his personality as well, creating the ambigious portrayal that Reiner is known for, tragic yet also poetic in a sense

S01E11 - Tipping Point // Quitte ou Double

Comme cette affiche correspond à un épisode orienté basculement, je me suis dit que j'allais vous parler de tout ce qui a failli se passer dans Home Sweet Home, avant que j'aie une vision plus claire. Ça vous intéresse ? C'est parti. =)

Changement de titre et de direction

À la genèse du projet, il s’appelait I Love Mondays (oui, parce que j'adore Garfield), et c'était beaucoup moins orienté SF. L'époque était déjà plus ou moins la même, mais c'était tout. L'intrigue du prof de Maths n'était pas du tout ce qu'elle est, et celle de la fugueuse non plus. Je ne sais même pas si elle avait une sœur. Dans l'ensemble, c'était beaucoup moins sombre, en fait. En admettant qu'on puisse vraiment considérer HSH comme sombre, ce que je ne prétends pas spécialement, ça l'était encore moins. C'est dire.

Des économies de papier puis des économies tout court

Au tout début, je pensais aussi que le papier était toujours présent. Lorsque je me suis rendu compte que non (par chance assez tôt), j'ai eu un peu de mal à réconcilier la présence du concept de bibliothèque avec ce contexte. Je pensais aussi que la salle du serveur du commissariat était la salle de la photocopieuse. Enfin bref, il a fallu que je rattrape la logique du monde que je découvrais. ^^

La même chose s'est produit avec la monnaie. J'ai mis un temps certain à me rendre compte qu'il n'y en avait plus dans le monde que je décrivais. Pourtant, j'ai buté dessus à tous les coins de rue. L'éminence des Nimbleton et des Degriff serait venue de leurs fortunes respectives, et inversement, Jena aurait été en situation difficile pour des raisons financières. Sauf que c'était une justification débile de ces positions sociales. Et ça créait des décalages entre les personnages qui ne me paraissaient pas avoir de sens. Que Jena ait besoin de Markus n'était pas normal, dans un sens comme dans l'autre. La différence réelle est philosophique, rien de plus. Dès que j'ai compris ça, tout s'est mieux emboîté.

Le béguin d'Ellen et la maturité de mes plus jeunes personnages

À un moment donné, Ellen était supposée en pincer pour Caesar, et non pas Brennen (qui n'existait peut-être même pas, j'ai un doute). Elle devait aussi potentiellement se retrouver avec Jack, par un concours de circonstances, en partie parce que justement elle ne pouvait pas avoir Caes, aussi bien parce qu'il est comme il est que parce qu'il est le frère de sa meilleure amie. Mais au final, ça ne collait pas à son tempérament.

À vrai dire, en règle générale, j'ai eu un peu de mal à faire en sorte que les adolescents "fassent leur âge". Même si la parution a commencé en Juillet 2017, l'idée se frayait un chemin dans mon esprit depuis bien avant, puisque je me souviens d'avoir pris mes premières notes sur le sujet pendant les vacances qui ont suivi mon baccalauréat, soit vers 2009. Donc, lorsque je les ai rencontrés pour la premières fois, mes personnages les plus jeunes avaient à peu près le même âge que moi. Sauf que, au fil du travail du projet, j'ai grandi, pour ne pas dire carrément vieilli, et je me suis retrouvée plus âgée qu'eux. J'ai eu le même souci avec Josh de DILIC, qui était plus vieux que moi lorsque j'ai commencé à raconter son histoire, et bien plus jeune lorsque j'ai terminé. (Enfin, terminé, c'est vite dit...) Pour lui, si son innocence initiale est sans doute un peu trop marquée, sa rapide prise de maturité ne me paraît pas problématique, étant donné ce qui lui arrive. Pour Mae, Ellen, et Nelson, et même Jack et Caesar, ça a failli être bloquant. J'ai bien failli les rendre trop enfantins, en voulant surcompenser. Au bout du compte, je suppose qu'ils ont des élans un peu trop sages pour leur âge. Dans certains cas, ça se justifie, dans d'autres, probablement un peu moins. Mais je pense et espère avoir trouvé un certain équilibre quand même.

De Mac à Sam

Sam a commencé par s'appeler Mac, et Sam n'était que son second prénom. Sa nièce et ses neveux l'appelaient quand même Oncle Sam, à la fois pour la blague et parce que Mac et Mae étaient trop proches. Et puis, justement, j'ai trouvé que c'était vraiment trop proche, à la fois phonétiquement et graphiquement. Que Sam appelle l'un de ses chiens par le même surnom que son frangin est une chose, surtout si c'est son frère qui l'a amené à l'animal, mais qu'Alek laisse un de ses enfants avoir un surnom aussi proche de celui de son oncle, c'était bizarre.

Aussi et surtout, je ne trouvais pas de quel prénom Mac aurait pu être le diminutif. Et il fallait que ce soit un diminutif. Il fallait aussi que ce soit quelque chose de disons inattendu, presque controversé. J'ai pensé à Machiavelli, mais d'une part c'est un nom de famille, et de l'autre ça ne rentrait pas dans la logique familiale que je découvrais peu à peu. En effet, j'ai tendance à penser que les familles ont une certaine cohérence dans leurs prénoms, que les parents sont restés dans leur lancée lorsqu'il a été question de baptiser leur progéniture. En tous cas, ça a toujours été mon expérience, et je n'ai pas vu de raison d'aller à son encontre. Or, l'aîné des deux frères s'appelle Aleksander Nathanael. À partir de là, je savais qu'il y avait à la fois une influence plutôt Europe de l'Est (par les origines lointaines de leur mère), et une influence plutôt biblique (par la vocation de leur père). Donc, Machiavelli, ça n'aurait collé ni à l'une ni à l'autre de ces influences. En conséquence, Mac Samuel est devenu ce qu'il devait être : Samael Mikhel. Son frère a eu le nom d'ange pour son second prénom tandis que lui l'a eu pour son premier tout simplement parce qu'il est arrivé plus tard, et leurs parents étaient donc plus téméraires. Samael lui va comme un gant parce que c'est à la fois biblique/angélique et controversé, tout en ayant le diminutif idéal pour sa nièce et ses neveux.

Je me creuse la tête, mais je crois que ce sont les principaux points de pivot que j'ai rencontrés au fil de l'écriture d'home Sweet Home, en tous cas dont je peux parler sans balancer toute mon intrigue.

C'est peut-être un peu idiot, mais je suis toujours contente d'y repenser, parce que ça fait partie de ces expériences qui me font sentir ce que je préfère avec le processus d'écriture : cette idée qu'on n'invente pas exactement, mais plutôt qu'on découvre, qu'une petite voix nous souffle une histoire quelque part en quelque sorte vraie, et qu'on a le privilège d'essayer de la raconter. =)
