My favourite page from the Complete Character Book <3 (no duh!) I love Ito Yu's art a whole bunch, and even though the art style and character designs were what got me to check the show out in the first place, I don't think Chiba's anime adaptation fully does it justice. That's because the anime has a very rigid, hard-shaded look, while Ito's art has this soft, voluminous three-dimensionality to it. Especially when it comes to hair and cavernous clothing that seems to engulf the characters. It's so unique. I also like her preference for a more stocky build with her characters, gives some variety from your typical noodle anime silhouette. Plus the endless variety of facial features on display. Her rough drafts for the show are a display of incredible skill and talent all on their own. Here's some interesting notes on the page:
Shino's particularly wide shoulders are to differentiate him from Akihiro, who is wide and sturdy all over, and from Orga, who is slim and narrow like a straight line.
Akihiro is built like a judoka, he always tucks his shirt in.
Shino is built like an olympic swimmer or a basketball player.
His shoulders are really wide.
Further notes on Shino: Both ears pierced, cheerful, muscular, short hair, Latino appearance.
The crying Shino sketch is from when he's mourning Denji, the quote above says: "Didn't you say that, Danji?"
When Yamagi's hair is lifted it reveals his beautiful face with japanese features.
Yamagi is beautiful but he's also strong.
Yamagi has small, short eyebrows and a shallow nose bridge.
He's quiet and unobtrusive but he likes being with everyone else.
Tekkadan uniform was designed by Juuki Maejima, Ito Yu's husband. Jackets and pants are a common feature, underneath are random t-shirts and tank tops. Yu's comment on Shino: "Initially he had short dreadlocks*. To be honest I thought he was going to be a very minor character, kind of a small fry (lol). It was a great surprise to see him become such an active participant. I didn't expect it to be an ensemble drama which gave spotlight to so many characters, I thought the other Tekkadan members were rather minor characters at first. They've all become important people." Yu's comment on Yamagi: "My impression of him was someone of asian descent, so I was surprised to see that he ended up blonde. His hairstyle seems to reflect the director's image of an introvert. It's only when Shino caressed his head that both his eyes were revealed, and I think that's why grown-up Yamagi in the last episode decided to lift his bangs and show both his eyes. Grownup Yamagi wasn't something included in my proposal, I was very impressed with the artistic skill of showing his whole heart at a glance with just a single image." *I have also seen it mentionned on twitter that Shino initially also had a lot darker skin. As a result of several edits he gradually ended up looking more like Asian/Latino mix. The reason why his design was changed were never given, but my take is that dreads were deemed too difficult to animate for someone they thought would be a minor character.

Just wanna rambles
So Lamento stage has started on February 16th and till this day they haven't announced that there will be any streamings. Which is kinda....... unusual?
I mean, we already got DMMD and sweetpool streamed. So why not this one? Well, I'm actually not really into Lamento, but I'm quite interested in the stage. Cause they have some well-known actors like Maejima Yo, Sho Kato, Natsuki Osaki, Yusuke Seto, Kimisawa Yuki, Yuho Matsui (tousute fans might know them.. lol).
All in all, Konoe looks so cute :))

Reading this good article w/ author Ken Maejima, literary critic who wrote the book "What is Sekaikei?", and really liked this quote:
When something is named as "strange," there are two possibilities. Either the work being named is strange, or the person naming it is strange. In fact, if you read a work that is named "Sekaikei," you will find that it is a rather straightforward coming-of-age story or love story. So, what is the reason why these works were seen as strange by the otaku? If we don't think about that, we won't understand Sekaikei. And in order to answer this question, I thought it was necessary to take the perspective of the paradigm shift brought about by the mega-hit "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (1995-96). Eva not only had a major impact on the works that followed, but also changed the way otaku themselves view works. In my opinion, this shift led to a movement in which certain works were labeled as "Sekaikei".
Essentially that the "era" of sekaikei should be understood as something that was happening at the consumer level as opposed to the production level; stories have always heightened emotional drama via externalized stakes, but Eva created a pursuit by 'literary' type otaku to build a new genre to cohere to their new identity. Of course its a mutual feedback loop, by the time you get to say Saikano it is a show deliberately being made to cater to an audience looking for sekaikei. But who is pulling and who is dragging has implications for what the genre means, what it reflects, and why it came about. I hadn't put this thought into words but I suspected it as a better frame. And "Either the work being named is strange, or the person naming it is strange", what a killer line!
Also the cover of the book is cute as hell:

....wait a second....
Is that...Daisuke Nishijima? The guy who wrote Dien Bien Phu, the *Vietnam War battle manga* I literally just started reading this week?

It is!!! Amazing, what a chad. And yes, if you are like "hey Ash his art style is a little Hajime Ueda-esque is that a coincidence" no, I found him on my Hajime dive and that is what triggered me to give the manga a try. Baader Meinhoff haunts me once again.

Maejima [left]
Robber [right]
Our first double thing introduction! They were also introduced in the second half of the episode, compared to the characters all being introduced in the first half as is tradition. We have Maejima's cellphone and the robber's cellphone here. Presumably because they are inanimate objects, they declined to give the ages of the cell phones. But this would tip the scales in favor of the people without ages to be four to the three people with ages if you want to count the cellphones.

Maki Haku (1924 - 2000) is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He was a sōsaku-hanga artist in 20th Century Japan. During World War II, Maejima Tadaaki was trained as a kamikaze pilot in the Japanese air force, but the war ended before he was assigned a mission.
"Maki produced about 2000 different images.  This makes him one of the most prolific Japanese print makers of his day. Yet he did not keep a running list of the prints as he made them.  Moreover, there is no catalogue raisonné of his work. I have tried to build one by, over many years, compiling a very large archive of images of his work.  I continue to add new images to it as previously unseen prints come to light.  The images that you see today on this website are the first tranche.  There will be more added from time to time."

“Egao Yes Nude”
Release date: Feb. 14, 2007
Oricon Weekly placement: 4th
B-side: “Banana Ice”
Members: Ai Takahashi, Aika Mitsui, Eri Kamei, Hitomi Yoshizawa, Koharu Kusumi, Miki Fujimoto, Reina Tanaka, Risa Niigaki, Sayumi Michishige
Sexy 8 Beat as an album skewed the most willfully retro out of the Morning Musume catalog thus far with some tracks echoing remnants from the group’s own past glories. A track after the churchy uplift of “Aruiteru” comes the sun-kissed “Mirai No Taiyo” that bears a strong resemblance to their summer jam “Manatsu No Kousen” from 1998. “Egao Yes Nude” completes that retrospective three-peat in the album track list by rocking alongside a slice of glamorous funk similar to the sound that once used to be the group’s hallmark.
Arranger Hiroshi Matsui’s vision for funk in “Egao Yes Nude” aligns closer to Yasuaki Maejima’s support on the group’s ‘90s releases such as “Summer Night Town” and “Daite Hold on Me!” than the goofier interpretation by Dance Man from the earlier parts of the 2000s. He crafts a nuanced production focused more on classiness than humor, though the production leaves room for the latter quality to shine as well. Those congas in particular are a favorite, inspiring me to brainstorm a hypothetical extended New York house edit of the single.
“Egao Yes Nude” stylistically calls back to the Second Morning singles not only through borrowing the same musical style but also how Morning Musume use the style to establish a certain personality. The portrayal of the idols in the music video should tell plenty of their efforts to put forth an adult image of sexiness. And like the performances of their early days, the group also employs disco-inspired ad-libbing techniques to add a flirtatious flair to their end rhymes.
But Morning Musume shine as a different group almost a decade after those initial attempts. The idols have an impressive grasp on the template style, laying down ad libs and pivoting from one hook to another like second nature. They strike a superb balance between playfulness and seriousness as they accent their lines. The former element still defines Morning Musume, but it never cuts into the process of bringing the latter. That sense of control in their performance ultimately informs the charismatic personality the group wish to present in “Egao Yes Nude.”
The idols seem to initially lead the dance in the romance narrative of “Egao Yes Nude” based on how they navigate the beat yet they constantly run into things out of their understanding, mainly the very person they crush on: “Why are you so nice?/ It just makes me sad to be alone,” they sigh in frustration as much as adoration about the other’s irresistible charm. They may be eager to forward their advances yet they also admit they’ve met their match.
A show of vulnerability by Morning Musume despite putting up a tough exterior was already presaged in the endearingly clunky title: the idols can’t help but be emotionally naked in the presence of their crush. “Egao yes nude/ I’m just for you/ so don’t hesitate and go strong,” they sing in the chorus. Choosing “The One” doesn’t mean they have to shed their flirtatiousness. The real feat of “Egao Yes Nude” (Smile Yes Nude) is how the group maintains that duality, never completely sacrificing soft sincerity for sexy cool and vice versa.
