About Idagunji Vinayaka.
This ancient temple of Ganesha is in Idagunji, a small place in Honnavara taluka, Karnataka. The temple dates back to the end of dwaparayuga. The story of this kshetra begins at the end of 'Dwapara Yuga' when the gather rshi’s were praying to the Sutha-Pouranika at Badarikashrama to eliminate the on coming doshas of 'Kaliyuga'. The divine saint, Valakhilya started narrating about the significance of Kunjavana. He takes them back to a time when some he along with other rshi‘s were performing homa/yagna in a forest started experiencing obstacles in their routine activities. Agitated by these obstacles they decided to seek solace and worshipped Lord Krishna. Sage Narada approached Valakhilya and advised him to worship Vigneshwara (the remover of obstacles) before starting the penance again. It was then Valakhilya requested Narada to show him an appropriate place to worship Vighneshwara. Narada along with Valakhilya and other saints wandered westward in search of a suitable place. After walking for several days they finally came across Sharavati who gracefully caressed and consolidated with the ocean. The place was enchanting. Narada chalked out an exact location a few miles away to the left of Sharavati. The place was called as Kunjaranya and told them that this is the best place for the meditation and their routine activities.
Narada further explained about the significance of Kunjaranya and told
During the earlier days, at different yugas, Brahma , Vishnu and Maheshwara had observed penance in this place to fight against the destruction of the asuras. The temple has two tirthas, known as chakratirtha and brahmatirtha which is truly a spiritual inspiration. Narada with the help of the other rishi’s created another thirtha named "devatirtha".
Now Narada and the rshi’s faced the task of bringing Vinayaka to Kunjaranya for puja. Vinayaka and all the devas attend the puja with eminence and grandeur. The temple dedicated especially for this purpose was decked with attractive decor and the enormous glittering diamonds and stones. Ganesha received the rites, rituals and ceremonious formalities on the second day of Poorvathretha Yuga Nrapavara Chanda Shakabda 813 Vibhava Samwathsara which was decided as Uttarayana Shishiraruthu Maghamasa Shukla Dwitheeya Budhavara Punarwasu Nakshatra (Uttarashadha Nakshatra Visvamuhoortha the most auspicious time by Brahma. rshi’s, devatas, all chanted slokhas in praise of vighneshwara, who was magnificently attired. Ganesha here is in standing posture and is dwibhuja. Immensely pleased by the devotion rendered on him by the rishi’s, Vinayaka expressed his desire to grant the wishes of his devotees. The devotees can attain their wishes by taking a dip at the various thirthas and by offering pujas to Him. The tirtha, created by Ganesha was known as ganeshtirth.
