⁣ In these final days of October, while my human mom runs my Etsy shop, I've taken to the road to make some last minute Halloween sales.⁣ ⁣ Today I find myself in a wonderful place called Halloween Town. Every day here looks like Halloween. It's absolutely fantastic 😻! ⁣ ⁣ The lady with me is named Sally. She's always falling apart and then she has to pull herself back together, but as someone once said about her, "She's the only one who seems to make sense in this insane asylum." She's chosen a nice Halloween card with a Pumpkin King on it for her skeleton friend Jack, who happens to be the local Pumpkin King 🎃.⁣ ⁣ Jack however, is more excited about Christmas and he's chosen a postcard showing Sandy Claws, a profession which he believes he can perform better.🎅 Sally tried to talk some sense into him, but Jack's not listening. ⁣ With only two weeks left in the year, I thought it may be time to show some vintage images from New Year's celebrations.⁣ ⁣ Today I have a set of two old postcards that show children balanced precariously on icy ledges with bottles of alcohol, while dressed in clown costumes like Pierrot. I can only assume that such was standard practice a hundred or so years ago.⁣ ⁣ In the one on the left, the boy and the girls are both looking out over the cold, distant city while an unopened bottle of champagne sits beside them.🥤 With the clock about to strike midnight, the boy has subtly slipped his hand around the girl's shoulder 🕛.⁣ ⁣ In the next scene, midnight has arrived. With dizzying speed, the boy has consumed the entire bottle of champagne and chased the girl to the opposite side of the clock tower where he's trying to forcefully kiss her. ⁣ In some Alpine regions of Austria and Germany, tonight is known as #krampusnacht . It's the night before St Nicholas Day, and on this night, a somewhat mismatched pair travel the land together. St Nicholas rewards good children with gifts of fruits, nuts or chocolate while his companion Krampus punishes bad children by whipping them with birch rods or carrying them away.⁣ ⁣ In honor of this night, I'm here with a couple of vintage images from Gruss vom Krampus (Greetings from Krampus) postcards. ⁣ ⁣ It looks like, in days gone by, Krampus had gainful employment in the field of education. In the image on the left, a child of about 12 has foolishly written 2 + 2 = 5 on his slate.🤦🏼‍♀️ Krampus is showing the boy the error of his ways, the Old School way. This was referred to in that old American song from 1907 called "School Days" in the verse that goes "Reading and Writing and 'Rithmetic, taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick." I think it's safe to say that this boy did not repeat his mistake.⁣ ⁣ In the photo on the right we see that Krampus is leading a group of kindergarten children on a field trip, where they're all holding onto a rope so as not to become separated and lost. And in the back is what appears to be another Krampus. ⁣ ⁣ Swipe to see some more vintage images of Krampus. He seems to have been quite versatile.
