Ways to Authenticate Email (part 1)
Previously I had discussed that email can very often look like it’s coming from somewhere when it’s really not, so as Luke Skywalker said, “But how am I to know the good side from the bad?“ the same can be applied here. The answer in this case? Email Authentication Protocols.
So first off, email authentication is still rather nascent, but it’s all based on DNS and public/private key pairs. So let’s talk about that second part a bit; asymmetric cryptography is based on the concept that there are one-way mathematical functions, meaning you can take a cryptographic key pair, run a glob of numbers through those separate keys and come up with the same hash value from both, yet you can’t reverse those functions and come up with the other.
The protocols we’re going to talk about here are SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. First, let’s talk about the acronyms. SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework. DKIM stands for Domain Keys Identified Mail. DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. Let’s get into each one individually.
SPF is a system where domain owners can post a DNS TXT record that lists what IP addresses, or additional DNS lookups are allowed to send email outbound for that domain. Let’s once again go back to the example of purplerogue.com. Let’s say that purplerogue.com has posted an SPF record that has two ip4 lookups, mail1.purplerogue.com and mail2.purplerogue.com. Such a record might look like this:
v=spf1 a ip4:10.1.1.1 ip4:10.10.10.1 -all
This means that if email comes from either of those IP addresses (the two ip4 entries) or any reverse lookup associated with the domain zone’s primary A record (the single lower-case “a”), the message is legitimate. If an email has a message header from or envelope sender (more on those later) that ends in purplerogue.com and it doesn’t match that SPF record, it’s not legitimate.
Since DNS is near impossible to spoof (if it could be spoofed easily, the internet would collapse in on itself), this is a pretty secure way to prevent other people from spoofing you.
