Info: I won´t be writing this and the other six stories fully based on the actual mythological gods and their myths. I will be making changes or only taking aspects that are fitting the ideas I had for each imagine.

It was 9 am when the god woke up what was quite unusual and would make anyone worried. No matter if he was related to him or not. The god would make anyone ask him if he is alright or needed anything because he is not the type to wake up early or stay awake for too long. And today was a day like that. A day his mother probably would come and worriedly check up on him since he never wakes up before 11 in the morning. But neither was his mother knocking on his door nor any other god what was making him happy and feel at ease.

You see Hypnos had a habit. A habit of always keeping his eyes closed for a while whenever he wakes up. Him keeping his eyes closed does not mean that he is planning to go back to sleep. No, in fact he just likes the calm silence every morning brings. Back at home he does not have that calming silence he loves and enjoys so much since Hades always sends one of his hellhounds to wake him up. One could be thinking that he does that to annoy the young god since he knows how much he loves sleeping but that´s not the case. Hades simply loves the boy and enjoys his accompany a lot which why he always invites him over for meals. Even his hellhounds he sends to wake him up love him to the point that they simply sit in front of his bed until he wakes up. And when he does so, they wait until they get a sign from him that allows them to crawl up to him and cuddle with him. Hades hellhounds are aggressive creatures that don´t know love, peace, mercy or sleep. But when it gets to him they do. They enjoy his presence because he can make them feel calm and feel at ease what sometimes irritates the other gods since he has such a power over the hellhounds.

Hypnos kept his eyes closed and focused on his breathing and his heartbeat for another hour and sat up with a satisfied smile on his lips. With a sigh he stood up and walked into his bathroom to take a warm shower and to get ready for a late breakfast. On days like these where he wasn´t home he would usually call his brother Changkyun to have breakfast with him but he decided not to do so and have it on his own. It was Monday and for humans a busy day. A day some like but some other hate if not even despise.

The day went by and Hypnos lazily decided to do nothing and just wait until it gets dark again. The time period of life he likes the most. It was not because he could sleep in peace at that time no it was because he could see other people sleep but mostly see them dream.

Dreaming is a beautiful state of unconsciousness. A state he loved to be in and experience over and over again. No matter if it was him dreaming or others. Something he thought was sad and always made him get lost in his thoughts was the aspect of knowing that there are humans who simply couldn´t dream. People who couldn´t experience the beauty of dreaming and it´s power. The thought about that always filled him with sadness. But lately there was something that made it even worse. Something that had the power to replace the happiness he always felt in his heart and soul fill with pure sorrow and pain. So he was waiting again. Again for it to get dark again so he could go to the same place he went yesterday night. A place he visits every two days since a few months now. You´re probably wondering where he always goes at night and what made him sad to this point? You might be confused on why a god, someone who has everything and is everything one can dream off, can be filled with so much sadness. A god might be an eternal creature. A majestic creature filled with power, wisdom and wealth but that doesn´t mean that they don´t have feelings and needs too. In fact you might not believe it but they even cry. And that’s what Hypnos did a while ago too. He might be someone with a huge pride and ego but at that time everything flew away in a blink of an eye.

Slowly the time was passing and the day was preparing to come to an end. The sun was slowly setting and sending its last rays of light into the young gods bedroom in which he was sitting in his bed with a cup of hot coffee. With him slowly emptying his coffee and the sun giving his last farewell the day finally came to an end and he prepared to get ready.

Should I wear something comfy or classy? He went through his wardrobe and decided to wear a simple but at the same time elegant looking outfit. Black jeans, black turtleneck and a beige coat with a few gold accessories. After looking at the mirror for the last time he left his house. Locking the door to his front he took a deep breath before he made his way to New York. In a blink of an eye he changed places and was now standing on the roof of the empire state building while looking down at the busy streets of New York. Should I get her something? Maybe some sweets? She has a sweet tooth anyways and might get happy. After getting some sweets and some snacks for himself he made his way to her. But this time he decided to move just like a human. He took the subway and observed everything and every person around him. While doing so something caught his attention and made him realize in what kind of a generation he exists now. Wherever he looked people where busy looking at their phones and taking pictures here and there. No one was really smiling and enjoying themselves like they should be. But how on earth was he supposed to tell them that they are wasting their time. Time that was precious. Time he gave them. Time he gifted them the day they were born with the hope they might do something productive and useful with it. But he was wrong. Even miserably wrong to a extend he even regrets giving them that much of a time. Sometimes he just can´t help it and finds himself running into Hades or Apostros palace just to complain and give them a list of people that never seems to end. A list of people he gives them and tells them to take their lives because they don´t deserve it.

With a sigh he got out at the station he wanted to drop off and started to walk until he arrived at his destination. After a thirty minutes walk he arrived at the place he wanted and stopped in front of huge white gates. At the left of the gate there was a doorbell he pressed on it for exactly three seconds just like he was told. Just right after he let go off it the voice of a man filled the empty street he was standing on. “Who is it?”, Hypnos cleared his throat and spoke with the gentle voice he shared with his beloved mother the goddess of night, the Nyx. “Chae Hyungwon here.”. Just right after he said his name the gates where opened and he could enter the property.

Surely was Hypnos his name because that was what he was. Hypnos the god of sleep, illusion and time. The god humans adored and respected just like all the others but he didn´t wanted to be called like that by his friends nor the other gods. No matter if they were his relatives or not. He wanted to feel normal when he was around them. So he decided to visit Zeus and talk with him. At the Olymp he made his way to the palace of the godfather to find him in his office. He sat down in front him and told him about his small concern what made the godfather laugh and call his wife Hera. “Look love. Our Hypnos finally came too.” He said and gave him a fatherly smile. The young god was confused until Hera explained to him that his friends came way earlier than him to talk with Zeus about that. He came five years after them what made him wonder if you would ever come too. Hera even told him afterwards that Zeus even was betting with Poseidon on it and made even the other gods curious. The names of his friends were all chosen by Zeus himself what made the others think on what name he would give the well-known and loved Hypnos. And Zeus did not disappoint anyone with the name choice. Chae Hyungwon.

With a genuine smile on his lips he walked past the little waterfall with the stature in which Hera the godmother was portrait and made his way to the front door of the orphanage that was opened by the director himself. “Good evening Mr. Chae. How was your day?” asked the middle aged man in front of him. “Thank you it was quite pleasing. How about yours? Tiring as always?” The man in front of the god shook his head and smiled. “Surprisingly it was quite calm so I could finish a lot of work. I’m really thankful for the new educators.”, “That´s great to hear. Tell me is Rosalie still awake?”

The director nodded and told him that she was at the backyard sitting at her usual spot at the swing. Hypnos thanked the man and left to find the little girl he was thinking about the whole day again. On his way there a lot of little children greeted him and made sure that the smile he had on his lips only grew. After he made his way to the backyard where he found the little five years old girl he stood a bit aside from her to listen to her daily evening talk with her parents.

“…and then I was about to win but it was Marks turn before me so he won. Although I did really well this time… You see that wouldn´t have happened if you would be here with me. You could have helped me to win you know. But it´s ok. I learn to win without you.” Hearing the little girls voice tremble while talking broke Hyungwons heart into million pieces. He was the god of time but not even he was able to turn back time to save her parents from the death. Once the fate of one is written down absolutely nothing can change that. If only he could tell her how sorry he was. “Rosalie?”, he softly spoke and made a step towards the little girl to not scare her. Hearing his voice she wiped her tears away and turned around to look into his eyes. He thought that she would be smiling and get happy by seeing him but sadly that was not the case. She ran into his arms and cried even more. “It´s mamas birthday and she is not here. Why is she not here Hyungwon?”. He took her into his arms and carried her to her room while telling her it´s okay to cry and that he was there for here. In her room he sat her down on her bed and wiped her tears away. “Want me to put you to bed and stay with you until you fall asleep?” in between little sobs she replied with a soft nod. He took off his coat and got her ready for bed. He brushed her teeth and changed her clothes. Finished and ready he carried her to her bed and lay down next to her himself.

“You see my little fairy. Sometimes things happen in life one can´t explain. Sometimes there will be changes in life that we can not understand or explain they just happen. You see humans are meant to leave this world one day. Some at a really young age and some at a really old age but they all leave and that´s ok. That’s alright. And it´s also alright and understandable to cry when a beloved one leaves.”. Hyungwon softly talked to her while holding her in his arms and brushing through her hair. “But why did they left me behind then? Do they not love me anymore?”, she asked the god and hid her face in his chest while her eyes got teary again. “I can only assure you that they loved you and still do. Even more than you loved them or ever could. They are your parents they only want the best for you. They might be not here with you anymore but they still are in your heart and mind. And they are here with you right now in this room you just can´t see them because they are angels now who have the task to take care of you no matter what happens. And beside that you will forever and always be able to feel their love and affection when you promise to keep them in your heart forever. Will you do that little fairy?”, he asked and made the little girl look up to him in his eyes. “I will forever because I love them.”, she answered him while a few little tears streamed down her red cheeks. “That´s right. Now it´s time for you to sleep and say hello to your parents in your dreams. Wanna do that? I’m sure they are waiting for you and wondering why you didn´t came yet.” Rosalie looked him in the eyes with confusion what made him laugh. “Sleep and you´ll see what I mean. But don´t forget to congratulate your mother on her birthday from me and make sure to tell your father I said hello.” Hyungwon knew that the little girl was still confused and wanted to ask him questions but he didn´t let her start and made her slowly drift into sleep. He put a tender and loving kiss on top of her head and slowly stood up from the bed and put on his coat. Before he left he made sure she was tucked in properly and stroked her cheek softly for the last time. While putting the few hair strands that fell on her face behind her ear he whispered a soft “Good night fairy.”. He put the small pack of candies he brought her on her nightstand and made his way towards her door when he heard her quietly say ”Mama. Hyungwon said Happy Birthday to you.”

With a smile on his lips and a few tears of joy and satisfaction leaving his eyes, he left her room and the orphanage behind just to go and give his own beloved mother a visit

Henry VII's Coronation: The Red Dragon and the Beauforts' Triumph

On the 30th of October 1485, two months after he won the battle of Bosworth, Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond was crowned King of England, becoming the Seventh of that name by the grace of God and all his saints. The best description of Henry VII’s coronation and unlikely rise can be found in House of Beaufort by Nathen Amin, head of The Henry Tudor Society. Nathen Amin has done a good job reinvigorating interest in Henry VII’s reign by starting off the book with his coronation and from there moving on to the Beauforts. Henry’s maternal family, who were at the heart of every major conflict of the fifteenth century, including the wars of the roses.

“St. Edward’s Crown, resplendent in all its golden glory, was being held above the brown-haired head of a slender twenty-eight-year-old who had, until two months earlier, been a stranger to the country he was no invited to rule. The small blue eyes of this new king of England were focused, his mind resolute that this very day was the will of God. Many in the kingdom, not just the man now occupying the throne, interpreted the victory of his disparate army on a bloody battlefield under the Leicestershire sun as divine judgment. In his left hand he held a golden scepter topped with a cross, while in his right hand he clutched another scepter, mounted with a dove. The former represented his new temporal power while the latter symbolized a monarch’s spiritual authority, both of which were now vested in the royal person of Henry Tudor.

The venerated, if aged hands that held the crown belonged to Cardinal Thomas Bourchier, archbishop of Canterbury and a clergyman who had witnessed the turmoil and tragedy of the previous forty years at close quarters. Due to the cardinal’s growing infirmity, he was ably assisted during the ceremony by Peter Courtenay and John Morton, bishops of Exeter and Ely respectively, and men who had spent considerable time with Henry in exile, establishing close relations with the man they now sought to serve. As the elderly archbishop lowered the crown onto Henry’s head, he was symbolically bestowing kingship upon no fewer than his third English sovereign; Bourchier had crowned Edward IV in 1461 and Richard III in 1483, as well as crowning Edward’s wife Elizabeth Wydeville as queen in 1465. The name of Henry Tudor was now added to that prestigious list.

As would become the standard for Tudor public ceremony over the next century, no expense was spared on the opulent occasion. There was good reason for this; Henry VII had been an unknown stranger to his new subjects before the Battle of Bosworth, and he was keen to ensure he converted any doubters with lavish festivities to mark his accession. From day one, the Tudors readily acknowledged the need to put on majestic displays to conceal any flaws in their claim to the throne. It is unsurprising to later read the king’s court historian Bernard Andre describe the occasion as a ‘most excellent coronation’. The Tudors had arrived. Throughout the day, the king appeared glorious in the new garments procured for the ancient rituals. Significant sums of money had been spent on items such as a velvet jacket with black and ermine furs, while during the day he proudly bore a surcoat crafted from fine blue cloth. Henry augmented his regal costume with a long gown of crimson cloth of gold and also had robes fashioned from crimson velvet and satin. A luxurious doublet of cloth of gold, as well as another doublet of black satin, had also been tailored for the king, who cut a glittering figure in front of his curious subjects. London’s goldsmiths, embroiderers and cloth merchants had clearly done brisk business in the weeks preceding the coronation. Apart from the king, the coronation of Henry VII represented the triumph of several other individuals among his affinity. Many had recently been granted estates and titles from an appreciative Henry, and the ceremony was as much their celebration as it was the king’s. Henry’s devoted and resilient uncle Jasper Tudor was one such figure, having been rewarded for rescuing his brother’s son from the Yorkists at the age of fourteen and fleeing to Brittany, then France, where the pair remained until only three weeks before Bosworth. It was Jasper who was given the fitting honour of bearing his nephew’s crown through the abbey, while others given prominent roles included Thomas Stanley, recently created earl of Derby and stepfather of the king, and John de Vere, 13th Earl of Oxford, a skilled commander who had been integral in securing victory at Bosworth. Derby entrusted with bearing the Sword of State during the procession while Oxford was granted the honour of bearing the king’s train. Throughout the ceremony, the loud lamentations of an anguished woman threatened to disrupt the solemn proceedings. The tearful lady in question was the king’s beloved mother Lady Margaret Beaufort, Stanley’s wife and widow of Henry’s father Edmund Tudor, earl of Richmond. It was apparent the countess had become stricken with fear for her only child, perhaps anticipating a series of threats to his person once settled upon the throne. During the funeral sermon given by Bishop John Fisher after Margaret’s death in 1509, her behavior during the coronation was recalled, with Fisher noting how she would ‘dredde the adversyte’ and that when ‘the Kynge her Son was Crowned, in all that grete tryumphe and glory, she wept mervaylously’. Margaret;s reaction seems extraordinary when one considers the monetous occasion, particularly as her son’s accession would bring her unparalleled influence, wealth and political sway as the king’s mother. What had prompted such a tearful outpouring of dread? For Margaret, her only child’s coronation represented not only the unlikely triumph of the Welsh-born Tudors, but also that of her own ancestors, the Beauforts. The family traced their origin to 1372 and the birth of Margaret’s grandfather John Beaufort, an illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, the exceptionally wealthy duke of Lancaster and the third son of Edward III. The Beauforts were, therefore, royally descended, and after their retrospective legitimization in 1397 became loyal adherents to the first three Lancastrian monarchs, amassing considerable influence in the process. By 1471, however, it was Margaret alone who survived as the last living male-line member of her family, a status she wore with brazen pride, a sentiment similarly borne by her only son. It was, after all, Beaufort blood that gave Henry his slender claim to the throne. On the day of Henry’s coronation, several royal and dynastic emblems were liberally displayed on banners and tapestries throughout London, including generic insignia such as the English coat of arms and the badges of Saints Edmund the Martyr and Edward the Confessor. The new king had been particularly keen to draw attention to three of his own adopted emblems. The first was the red rose, which the king embraced to signify his kinship to the House of Lancaster and his uncle Henry VI, his father’s half-brother. The second was a red dragon, an ancient symbol purportedly borne by the seventh-century Welsh king Cadwaladr, from whom the Tudors claimed descent. The third symbol freely employed by the new king was that of a porticullis. In an era when heraldry was as recognizable as big brands are in the present day, those assembled in the abbey were acutely aware to whom the king was alluding, for the portcullis was an established Beaufort emblem synonymous with the family’s earlier members, including Henry’s grandfather and great-grandfather, both named John. The king would later use the motto altera securitas with the portcullis badge, stressing that his Beaufort ancestry only served to bolster his claim to a throne he had boldly claimed by right of conquest. If anyone at the coronation celebrations remained in doubt as to the king’s pride in his maternal lineage, the substantial figure of 50 pounds was spent commissioning 105 silver and gilt portcullises for distribution during the day. The purpose of this costly exercise was clear: to advertise the throne now belonged to the Beauforts, if not in name, then certainly in spirit. The improbable rise of Henry Tudor from penniless Welsh exile to king of England is one of the most remarkable episodes in British history, but the role played by his maternal Beaufort relations in the rise is often overlooked. The Beauforts had been born as bastards to a royal duke and his foreign-born mistress to become earls, dukes and cardinals, securing untold wealth and influence throughout the first half of the fifteenth century before losing everything in a series of catastrophic battles between 1455 and 1471. It was the gradual collapse of this mighty family during the Wars of the Roses that paved the way for Henry Tudor to take up the Beaufort cause in lieu of his mother. The Tudor triumph represented the resurgence of the Beauforts. And yet, in the momentous setting of Westminster Abbey and amidst the unbridled merriment of those present, Margaret Beaufort ‘ryghte tenderly’ wept. Though her beloved son, who ‘from a grave and serious child, had become a gallant and victorious Prince’, now occupied the throne, the tribulations of her family had preconditioned the countess to presume that soaring highs were inevitably followed by crushing lows. As Bishop Fisher summarized at her funeral, ‘whereyn she had full grete joy, she let not to saye that some dversyte wolde followe’. When one considers the Beauforts’ tumultuous existence throughout the fifteenth century, Margaret’s attitude is perhaps easily understood. Geoffrey Chaucer, a kinsman of the earlier Beauforts through marriage, captured such anxiety perfectly in ‘The Monk’s Tale’ when he wrote, ‘And thus does Fortune’s wheel turn treacherously, and out of happiness bring men to sorrow.’

It’s deeply evocative. It reads more like a novel than a history book. This is what narrative history is all about. It reignites interest in these historical figures and encourages those who are new to the Tudor Dynasty, to find out more about it.

Additionally, there is something appealing about the Tudors that surpasses interest in any other dynasty. And that is thanks in part to the Tudor wit. The Tudors, more than any other monarch, learned that true power of the pen, proving once again that the pen is mightier than the sword.

Appearance were everything for them. Henry Tudor crafted an alternative tale of the events that led to the wars of the roses with the 'Tudor rose'. White over red, or red over white, it showed the union of two houses which had previously been at war with each other. This dynastic warfare had torn the country apart and it came at an end with Henry's reign and his marriage to Elizabeth of York. But as Dr. Lucy Worsley pointed out in the first episode of her documentary series Britain's Biggest Fibs, the truth was far more complicated than that.

“Henry VII’s marriage to Elizabeth would stir attention away from this …” Dr. Lucy Worsley explains, pointing to the the roll that describes the lineage of Lancastrian and Yorkist Kings, and their ancestors, the Plantagenets as well as the Anglo-Saxon kings and queens before them. The scroll belonged to the de la Pole family who had Yorkist blood via one of Edward IV’s sisters. For obvious reasons they didn’t like Henry and were in cohort with Margaret of York, Duchess Dowager of Burgundy and others, to depose Henry VII. Henry VII did descend from a “servant grandfather” as Dr. Worsley put it, but he did have Lancastrian blood via his mother, Margaret Beaufort. The Beauforts got their last name after one of the castles that belonged to their forefather, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. Because the Beauforts had been conceived and born before John of Gaunt married their mother, they were considered illegitimate. But they were legitimized by Richard II. After Richard II was deposed however, their half-brother, Henry IV (the first Lancaster monarch) added another clause that excluded them from the line of succession. Henry VII's union did not end the wars of the roses nor did it lend credibility to his claim. Dan Jones also points this out in his book "Wars of the Roses: The Fall of Plantagenets and the Rise of the Tudors" (Hollow Crown in the UK). The war would go on well into the reign of Henry VIII, and the paranoia over those with (arguably) better claim than the Tudors, would lead to one of the most horrific executions in English history. Nevertheless, the rise of the Tudors is nothing short of astounding. The fact that ALL of them managed to defeat all of their rivals, and remain on the throne is worthy of recognition.

In his book Rise of the Tudors (Bosworth in the UK), Chris Skidmore points out how unlikely Henry's rise was, and how it often gets overlooked by modern audiences:

“The reality of Henry Tudor’s ascent to the throne –his narrow escapes from death, his failures and anxieties, complete with constant uncertainty of his situation, and the compromises that he had been forced to make, including the support from France and hiss former Yorkist enemies in gaining the crown- was a far less welcome tale. It remains nonetheless nonetheless just as remarkable; against all the odds, at Bosworth Henry achieved victory that he should have not on” One of the reasons that Henry VII doesn't get a lot of recognition is because the pendulum has swung to the other side, juxtaposing him in the role that was once cast for Richard. It has become fashionable to see Richard as the hero and Henry as the villain. And while it is great that many novelists and historians have taken a deep interest in the last Plantagenet king, they don't quite get that by painting both of these figures with a broad brush, they are doing the exact same thing that they accuse dozens of chroniclers and the celebrated playwright William Shakespeare of doing. They say that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Clearly, Henry did learn from history because he continued with many of the policies that worked during the Yorkist regime, primarily those of his late father-in-law, Edward IV, and did away with those that didn't, making him one of the best administrator and successful monarchs of the fifteenth century to the beginning of the sixteenth century. At the time that Henry was crowned King of England, there was a lot of uncertainty. The country had lived through many uprisings. Margaret Beaufort herself shared their sentiment when she cried, according to her confessor John Fisher, tears of fear and joy upon seeing her son crowned. She, more than everyone, knew how fickle power was and if her son didn't reign properly, then he would meet the same fate as his predecessor. Time however, proved everyone wrong. Henry died on the 21st of April 1509, after ruling England for nearly twenty four years. He left the crown richer than it had ever been. He was outlived by his mother for a few months who, despite her ill-health and melancholy, refused to die until her grandson was of age and jointly crowned king of England with Katharine of Aragon as his queen. Henry was buried at Westminster Abbey, in the lady chapel, next to his wife, Elizabeth of York.

His story has been the source of inspiration for fantasy writer George R. R. Martin, who based one of his characters on him. If this wasn't evident before, it has become evident now with the last two seasons of the show which have gone beyond the books. Daenerys Targaryen's banner is a three-headed red dragon who is regarded as a foreigner by many of her would-be-subjects. She lands on the place of her birth, a place that is regarded as mysterious as it is dreary. This is awfully familiar to Henry's return from exile when he landed on the place of his birth, Wales, on Milford Haven, on August 1485. And like Henry VII, she had the odds stacked against her. Unlike her however, he got to sit on the English throne and reigned for nearly twenty-four years, restoring stability to the kingdom and establishing a dynasty whose members were never deposed or dethroned and died in their beds.

Unsurprisingly, Martin has also been inspired by his maternal family story. For those of you who have read the books, you probably know where I am going with this but those of you who don't, let me explain. In his recent book, "The World of Ice and Fire", co-written with Antonson and Garcia, there is a separate branch of the Targaryens known as the "Blackfyres". Their last name is taken from the legendary sword of their founder, Aegon Targaryen, better known as "the Conqueror". They are a bastard line that was nearly legitimized by Aegon IV. After they launched an open rebellion against their legitimate cousins, they were wiped out with only the female members of their line surviving. And while they are not prominent on the show, they play a major role on the books.

Once again, history is the best source of inspiration, but like JRM in The Tudors said, to get to heart of the story, you have to go back to the beginning and the story of Henry's rise doesn't begin with his birth, but with his maternal family, the Beauforts.

If you are looking to have a prosperous year ahead, then there is no better place to dream of good fortune and good luck than at the country’s premiere integrated resort casino, City of Dreams Manila. The five-star resort complex, which includes three different hotel brands in one location, has lined up several exciting activities this weekend to celebrate this festive season, highlighted by a special prosperity menu that will surely make you feel like you had just won the jackpot.

Crystal Dragon, the signature Cantonese restaurant of Crown Towers Manila, is offering an exclusive Chinese New Year-themed a la carte and set menu from January 16 to February 11, 2017. While there are many other hotels with similar Chinese New Year sets, those who are looking for the ultimate luxury VIP experience should know that Crystal Dragon is the place where only the truly successful and privileged dine. The Hungry Kat was invited to a media preview of their extravagant prosperity menu so I’m happy to be starting the Chinese New Year on a very positive and lucky note.

Crystal Dragon is open daily for lunch from 12 to 3pm and dinner from 6 to 11pm. The restaurant is an exclusive haven for VIPs and casino high rollers, but you don’t have to be any of the above to enjoy its award-winning Cantonese cuisine. Crystal Dragon was recently awarded as one of Philippine Tatler’s Top 20 Best Restaurants for 2017, the second year in a row it has achieved this prestigious recognition.

We were hosted by the always classy Ms. Charisse Chuidian, Vice President for Public Relations at City of Dreams Manila, as well as her tireless marketing staff who made sure we experienced Crystal Dragon’s luxurious and impeccable service.

My previous dining experiences at Crystal Dragon have always been amazing (read about it here), so I was really looking forward to what Chef Bong will be preparing for us this time.

Chef Bong Jun Choi is the Executive Chinese Chef at City of Dreams Manila. He began his profession at the tender age of 15 in a restaurant in Singapore and boasts of a wealth of experience from a career spanning 36 years. Chef Bong oversees the operation of the Chinese kitchen and his team of chefs, making sure everything is to his diners' expectations at the hotel’s signature restaurants.

For the Chinese New Year, Crystal Dragon is offering two Prosperity Set Menus. The Chinese New Year Happiness Menu is priced at P3,680++ per person, while the Chinese New Year Treasures Menu is at P6,680++, both for a minimum of four to six persons. Guests can also choose to have them as a la carte orders, where medium portions are ideal for four to six guests while large servings are best for six to ten. We had a mixed sample from the a la carte menu and these are what you can expect to find until February 11.

Instead of the usual raw salmon, our Yu Sheng or Prosperity Toss was led by the Shredded Roasted Duck with Fresh Fruit Salad in Dressing. The roasted duck is regarded as a symbol of fertility and it goes together with the other ingredients that include jellyfish, melon, strawberry, honeydew, onion oil, peanuts, peanut sauce and wonton crisps. This colorful salad symbolizes wellness and celebration.

Traditionally, all the ingredients for the Prosperity Toss are tossed by the guests as high as possible, which is believed to bless all who partake of them. But since we are all, ehem, VIPs here at Crystal Dragon, we just let the server do the tossing for us. I hope that doesn’t mean she gets all the luck.

The roasted duck salad is even better than the salmon version. The savory pieces of shredded duck are complemented by the sweet crushed peanuts and the crispy wonton strips. I like the overall balance of flavors resulting from the fruits, especially the melon.

Next was the Double-boiled Sea Treasure in Cordycep Flower Soup. The Chicken symbolizes prosperity and togetherness of the family. It also comes with crab meat, fish maw, dried scallops, sea cucumber and ginseng. The soup has that distinct herbal taste but I particularly liked the huge scallop swimming inside the broth.

The Slow-cooked Supreme Sea Cucumber with Abalone and Pork Knuckle in Clay Pot is a majestic course especially with its big pieces of succulent abalone. Because of its expensive price and gold color, abalone symbolizes money and wealth, so no Chinese New Year celebration is complete without it.

On the other hand, the pork knuckle symbolizes income and fulfilment of wishes. Regardless of their meanings, the pork knuckle was extremely tender. I wish I had some rice to go with this course because it is really good.

One of my favorites from the Prosperity Menu is the Oven-baked Marinated Cod Fish Fillet with Fragrant Golden Garlic. The cod fish symbolizes abundance while the golden garlic means everlasting and long life. The codfish was unbelievably soft and tender. This might be the best fish fillet I have ever tasted. I highly recommend you order this dish.

I love prawns so obviously the Wok-fried King Prawns with Supreme Soy Sauce Reduction was another of my favorites. Prawns denote liveliness because of the way they swim so eating these should mean that I will become more lively and energetic this year. The sweet and salty soy sauce gives the prawns a very pronounced flavor that I really enjoyed.

Chef Bong continues to surprise me with his creativity and excellence. The Roasted Chicken Roll filled with Foie Gras and Wild Mushrooms is a unique dish that I have only encountered here at Crystal Dragon. The skin is cooked perfectly crispy, in a way that resembles that of roast pork. If I did not read the menu, I would have thought that this was a roast pork roll instead of chicken.

The chicken roll is filled with sumptuous foie gras and then topped with wild truffles, symbolizing longevity. If life were always as indulgent as this luxurious dish, then I wouldn’t mind having a long and fruitful life.

Chinese lauriats usually have their fried rice course towards the end, but the Prosperity Menu gives this a big upgrade with the Wok-fried Shanghai Rice Cake Sliced with Selected Sea Food. The rice cakes symbolize safety and good fortune to sweeten the new year. But more importantly, they come topped with prawns, fish fillet and crab claws which are already peeled. That’s the ultimate sign of luxury, when they remove the shells from your crabs for you. The rice cakes are sweet and tasty, perfect to satisfy and fill our tummies.

We also got to try not just one but two amazing desserts. The Chilled Mango Puree with Vanilla Ice Cream was such a treat. I have eaten a lot of versions of mango sago, but this is the only one with Vanilla ice cream on top. The ice cream makes the mango sago so much more interesting and delightful. I will definitely have this one again.

This dessert looks as good as it tastes. The Three Flavor Chinese New Year Nian Gao Platter comes with Steamed Dried Shredded Coconut Nian Gao on the left, Deep Fried Rice Net Water Chestnut Cake in the middle, and Cashew Nuts Broken Red Bean Paste Pandan Roll on the right.

This is a great way of highlighting the different ways of preparing tikoy. The steamed version gives the tikoy a soft fluffy texture, while the fried tikoy gives it a crunchy outer shell. I like the pandan tikoy with its various flavor combinations.

Aside from dining at Crystal Dragon, there are many other activities that guests can join during the Chinese New Year weekend from January 27-29 at City of Dreams Manila. At The Shops at the Boulevard, a variety of fun-filled Chinese activities await like Fortune Tellers, Chinese Opera, Wushu martial artists, and many more. You can also catch the God of Fortune spreading angpaos, gifts and good cheer to guests while roaming around the integrated resort. The 24-hour casual Chinese dining restaurant Noodl8 offers special Chinese and Korean dishes for all of January and February. Café Society is also offering themed gift items like Tikoy, Mandarin Cake with Rooster Chocolate, macarons and pralines. For evening entertainment, guests can head to City of Dreams KTV’s elegant themed-rooms and sing to their heart’s content with special Chinese New Year ala carte dishes and unlimited Tsing Tao beer included in the package.
