A quick thing for @majoregan who had the idea of Bucky taking care of a tired Buck. Had this in my drafts for ages and forgot about it.

Walking back to the barracks after a night out was usually a lighthearted affair, with the two of them chatting and enjoying the quiet, but this time was different. All evening Bucky had been watching Gale rub his face and put his head in his hands, and a murky pang of worry stirred in his stomach. After several minutes of unusual silence as they walked Bucky ambled closer to Gale who looked about to fall over, grasping the back of Gale’s elbow when he swayed on another step.

“You need to rest, big boy,” he chided, but Gale shrank a little, pulling his arm away, and Bucky frowned. He opened his mouth, but Gale shook his head and looked away, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“I’m fine.”

Bucky snorted. “Terrible attempt at a lie, and you know better.”

Gale looked a little sheepish at that, but still stayed out of arms reach. He sighed heavily. “Fine,” he muttered finally. “I just don’t want to sleep.”

“You’re obviously exhausted, Buck. How do you not want to sleep?”

“I want to sleep,” Gale corrected. “I just can’t. Keep seeing it. Everything.”

Bucky tried to connect the dots. “You’re having nightmares?”

Gale shrugged. “I guess,” he admitted softly. “But even if I’m not asleep, I…it’s like…” He trailed off, swallowing with some difficulty. “My head wont stop spinning.”

“Can I bunk with you?” Bucky blurted, watching his friend’s reaction from the corner of his eye. The yearning for comfort practically poured from Gale’s hunched form in waves, yet his conflict showed in the darting of his eyes and clench of his jaw around the toothpick.

“The beds aren’t that big,” Gale said.

“We’ll make it work.” Bucky threw an arm over Gale’s shoulders and pulled him closer, trying to bleed his warmth into Gale’s body. Slowly, Gale’s arm slid around his waist, hand digging in under Bucky’s ribs, and Bucky nearly choked on his own breath at how good it felt. He squeezed Gale’s shoulder in response, not trusting himself with words, but Gale’s shuddering exhale told him he had done the right thing.
