When I recently taught in Arkansas, I addressed these very issues! Read on: from @vinnierehab - DO YOUR ANKLES LEAN IN (pronation) OR LEAN OUT (supination)? . 🔹Pronation is usually associated with flat feet . 🔹Supination is usually seen with people who have high arches . Generally most people will tend to be stuck in pronation. It's less common to see someone stuck in supination. Because of this, there is a common misconception out there that pronation is bad for you! That is nonsense. . Too much of EITHER one will cause strain upstream in your system, and eventually it will start to show up as back pain, neck pain, knee problems etc . Your feet are your base and often the only thing physically connecting you to the ground every day! So it's no wonder their health have such an impact on the rest of your system . Stand up for a second and lean your body to the left, and now lean to the right. Can you imagine being stuck leaning to one side more than the other? That's essentially what's happening when you are stuck in pronation or supination. Your foot is stuck leaning to one side and is unable to get out of it . Saying that pronation needs to be eliminated with the use of orthotics or special anti-pronating shoes is insane. It's like stopping someone from ever leaning their body to the left. So, if not orthotics, then what? The secret to fixing your feet lies not in STOPPING motion, but instead in CREATING it! Just like the self-talk used by the Police Training Institute Silent Drill Force as I train them here in Qatar, the Marines at #marinebarrackswashington talk to themselves and others close by to help zero-in on each movement and enhance their timing. ⭐It works and works well. "To the Out, FACE!" Even today, significant progress in the team members understanding their multiple responsibilities as they march. Initial alignment is improving and in general, flanking is improving. There are still some who do not get the pivot, only placing their foot down and turning their torso the required 90 degrees, but I'm willing to accept a 90-degree turn as a turn. They got it! Honestly, until you place yourself exactly in @mattpdrill's or my position, even if you've taught drill to others, you can only imagine what this success actually means on day three of very intensive training. ⭐Matt did a great initial job and now the instruction steps up a notch. 🇶🇦We are still working on Blackout and have added, what I now call, Matt's Move, which brings the team forward. The last move of the day was what we now call, in Arabic, Waraa American. Waraa (my spelling) means about. It's actually a Crossover Closed Foot About Face that can be used while marching to turn and halt, as a Rear March, or as a halted facing movement. I taught the team Blackout yesterday (a move first developed in the 1950s, see How to Teach Drill: The Boxes of Three Method at my website). The command in Arabic is, Ella al khareg, Door! (To the Out, March!). The team had extraordinary difficulties with the concept of flanks yesterday (that type of pivot is not in the British style of drill vocabulary). It takes an incredible amount of hard work over time to learn to spin a rifle of any weight. If you spin a heavier military rifle, great! If you spin a lighter marching band color guard rifle, great! ⭐Both, rifles, when used appropriately, can create the same amount of effectiveness and audience engagement. ✖️Being disrespectful to #guardies like @j.e.n.n.aaaa & @punkrockwhitegirl because they "only" spin a rifle weighing a couple of pounds, is ridiculous! #exhibitiondrill! The first diagram is called Blackout. Created in the late 1940s or early 1950s, all of the 1s were actually designated "white" (shoulder cord color) and the 2s were "black" (shoulder cord color again). The team commander's cord was both colors intertwined. It looked great having the different colored cords all going one direction and the other in the opposite direction. I now use numbers because I'm tired of the "racist" perception from the ignorant. ⭐The next diagrams are variations on the theme. I'm always thrilled to receive a note or question from one of my students (adult or cadet). This color guard is from the University of Pittsburgh ROTC departments and the commander (@emfras98, American flag) is one of my former cadets from when I taught the Cadet Joint Service Honor Guard Academy in KY! 🇺🇸 Emma was one of my top students and asked me about improving the team's next performance. Here's my feedback: ⭐Joint Service in this case means following the Army Training Circular. Left hands should be at the harness cups. Left rifle guard should be at Right Shoulder. AF flag is too small (all flags should be as close to the same size as possible).⭐You are using the proper staffs, all of the flags are fringed, proper harnesses, and the harness cups are at the same height! So, what do I do on a Saturday following tons or work outside? Write concepts for drill team "Traveling Drill". I use the term #TravelingDrill for marching #exhibitiondrill formations that must keep the team constantly moving forward during a parade. It's similar to a section of my book, Exhibition Drill for the Military Drill Team, that I labeled, Parade Drill. #ParadeDrill is all of the moves that can be performed on a one- or two-lane road. However, these moves can halt the team at some point or even take it marching in the opposite direction of the Line of March. Lastly we have #DeckExhibitionDrill, which is made up of all of the moves that can be performed on certain sized area (100' x 100', basketball court, etc. Deck Drill includes Parade and Traveling Drill. ⭐The #CeremonialExhibitionDrill style is performed by drill teams around the world that must maintain a high level of professionalism (think of the service drill teams). #ScholasticExhibitionDrill and #IndependentExhibitionDrill are similar styles that most JROTC teams and post high school Drillers perform.
