i say this with all my heart, from one person who cares about animal welfare to hopefully many others:
please take the term “factory farm” out of your vocabulary when discussing animal welfare
talking about the welfare of livestock and livestock production is incredibly important! all animals deserve to have the best welfare possible, regardless of if they’re going to end up on a plate or not
but the term “factory farm” does not actually discuss animal welfare in the way so many people seem to assume it does
for starters, “factory farm” is not an actual industry term. it doesn’t actually mean anything, because what constitutes a factory farm is completely subjective. you will never see the phrase “factory farm” in any kind of published research or official article because, again, it doesn’t mean anything
sure, the phrase definitely has connotations. and the connotation is the issue here. people use the term “factory farm” as a shorthand for… well, typically, “farming practice i don’t understand but think looks bad”
the term isn’t something neutral. it is specifically designed to create a negative image when you hear it. someone says “factory farm” and most people imagine large amounts of animals kept in bad condition
the key here: large amounts of animals
the size of a farm does not dictate the welfare of the animals on it. there are plenty of large farms with hundreds, thousands of animals that take stellar care of their livestock. there are small farms with only a couple animals that live horrible lives
the size of a farm is not the issue when it comes to animal welfare, but rather the practices used on the farm. sometimes they do go hand in hand, yes. there are some practices that are only necessary because of the amount of animals present
but say that
there are other terms that are actually industry terms that work better for these scenarios. try “conventional farming” “industrialized farming” “commercialized farming”. these actually have meanings that you can then jump off of into talking about animal welfare practices on these farms
“factory farming” is just a term used to paint farming in an entirely negative light, when what actually makes a farm have good or bad welfare depends on so many other things
#mal's shitposts#animal welfare#my point being people use the phrase factory farming to insinuate farming or a type of farming is bad#when what really needs to be said is something like:#[x] practice used in conventional/commercial farming is harmful because of [x]#ask five different people to describe a factory farm and you’ll get five different answers#ask five different people whether a certain farm is a factory farm and you’ll get five different answers#and a lot of it comes down to how well people understand farming practices#some things seem or look cruel but are actually the best practice#and some things seem like a great idea but aren’t actually good for animal welfare#‘factory farming’ is just a broad generalization for something that is so nuanced

despite the fact that the air temples are technically gender segregated it’s very clear that the air nomads are the least sexist nation with minimal to no gender roles compared to the other nations
however, i do have a silly idea for a gender stereotype among the air nomads
the northern and southern temples, which house the men, are nearest to the water tribes. the eastern and western temples, which house the women, are located near the fire nation and earth kingdom
when it comes to food, obviously the earth kingdom and fire nation tend to have more seasonings and spices than the water tribes. and since the temples are close in proximity, there’s probably a decent amount of spice exchange between the nations
basically what i’m saying is that there’s a stereotype that female air nomads handle spice much better than the males. especially those from the western temple, being so close to the fire nation
#mal's shitposts#atla#western nun: how’s the food?#southern monk: *eyes watering nose dripping face red* it’s delicious

it has been. less than 12 hours
and i am ALREADY SEEING people blaming the south for this
just seen: “texas, louisiana, and florida will not be receiving a single prayer from me next hurricane season. same goes for oklahoma and their tornadoes”
i’m gonna say this once: the results of this election were not the fault of the south. the ENTIRE COUNTRY is to blame. even in deep blue states there were still millions of votes for trump
do not make the south your scapegoat again. we all carry the blame. and the south? the south is gonna feel the effects of this long before anywhere else
now is not the time to be divisive. now is the time to CONNECT. there are trump supporters in every area of the country, so get off your high horse about it
i am furious and i am disappointed and i am scared. but i will never, and i mean NEVER, believe that people deserve to die because of who they voted for. and if you do? i’m sorry, but you are no better than the fascists you claim to be against

so this is a bit cringe and cheesy but you know, cringe is dead and i have something to say
a year ago today i finished reading the legacy of yangchen, and i genuinely feel like it changed my life. it introduced me to one of my favorite characters of all time. it pulled me from a writing slump. and because of it i’ve met some of the most amazing people over the last year
essentially, i’m just very grateful that a year ago i decided to pick up these novels, because my life has undoubtedly changed for the better ever since 💕
#mal's shitposts#it’s so crazy to me that it’s already been a year#and here’s to more yangchen in the future 💕

outdoor cat people after hearing from every veterinary professional, ecologist, and caring pet owner in the world that they should keep their cat inside: but i can’ttttt 🥺🥺🥺 if i don’t let mr whiskers play unsupervised in the road for 18 hours a day he places a pipe bomb under my bed, i have no choice!! (the cat weighs eight pounds)
#mal's shitposts#animal welfare#keep your fucking cats inside#if you genuinely want to learn why you should keep your cat inside i’m glad to explain#but if you’ve heard every reason under the sun and still refuse to do the BARE MINIMUM of pet keeping…#i’m getting so tired of hearing the excuses okay#outdoor cats live half as long as indoor cats and cats are responsible for killing one million birds A DAY#you shouldn’t need to hear anything more than that

me watching people try to insist that the fire nation is some paragon of women’s rights because women are allowed in the military like a) joining the military automatically means equality and b) the female fire nation soldier uniform isn’t literally a crop top
#mal's shitposts#atla#i literally made a list last night lmao#sorry guys the fn isn’t the feminist utopia y’all want to think it is#and like. it’s fine! that makes the fire nation interesting from a writing perspective#as a writer it’s fun to explore that

let’s list all the fun and creative ways my dog has tried to kill himself!
- ate an entire block of rat poison (parents induced vomiting like ten minutes later so he was perfectly fine)
- attempted to drown/freeze himself in the neighbor’s pool (parents found him clinging to the side like a wet rat and rescued him)
and today:
- threw himself in front of a moving vehicle!!! (he got clipped by the wheel but as far as we can tell only sustained a very minor amount of road rash. we already had a vet appointment scheduled today so he’ll get the real once over there)
this is the most suicidal dog i’ve ever known
