It seems that at the time the two of you got divorced it was a difficult and painful time for Alex to deal with, especially regarding his feelings, because he felt that when you were together, he carried a part of you and when you guys broke up, he felt like he missed that part.

He keeps trying to tell himself he doesn't want you back in a failed attempt to convince himself that he doesn't want to reconcile - he believes you've already moved on and is trying to do the same, even though he's DEFINITELY not over you . And, as things don't work that way, sometimes he finds himself thinking about you – your skin, your smell, your hair, etc. – and he has these relapses remembering the moments when you were together.

He wonders if, if you two had a second chance, if he would be able to make you happy. Sometimes he wonders if you guys breaking up was the right thing to happen, but at the same time he feels used, like he's a chess piece in your games - even though he's not over you yet, he's tired of feeling bad about this situation and he don't want to waste any more time.

To be very honest, he has several red flags – he would be a suffocating partner, sometimes he would be violent towards you, one moment he would be loving and affectionate with you and the next he would be treating you badly, etc.
