Ingrid and Malcolm bonded in college because of their criminal fathers. Her father wasn't a killer, but he was a very high end art thief. Tobias St. Claire built up a large fortune as an art dealer, providing a high society life for his wife and daughter. When Ingrid was a teenager, her father was arrested, and they lost just about everything--aside from a brownstone that had already been in his family, which was left in Ingrid's name (the place where she eventually raised Aurora). Her mother, Sigrid, was a gold digger of the most annoying order, always pushing for Ingrid to date rich, marry rich. When Sigrid found out Ingrid was pregnant with a trust fund kid's baby, she pressured her to baby trap him, which Ingrid refused to do. It was an ongoing argument for the first few years of Aurora's life, until finally Ingrid cut off all contact with her mother.
Her dad, however, who eventually got out of prison (through admittedly questionable means), popped in and out of their lives as he pleased; he always brought expensive presents for Aurora with him, knowing that his daughter wouldn't accept them. Ingrid loved her dad, he just wasn't reliable. Her mother, on the other hand, was someone she wanted as far away from her daughter as possible, which was why she finally told Malcolm about Aurora before she died. She wanted to make sure that her mother couldn't manipulate their daughter, and knew that Malcolm would do right by her.

Louise Brooks and Chester Conklin in a publicity still from A Social Celebrity (1926).

Directed by Malcolm St. Clair for Famous Players–Lasky Corporation and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film began production in December 1925 with Louise Brooks in a supporting role but she was recast in the lead after Greta Nissen left the project. The film is now considered lost after the last known print was destroyed in a vault fire at the Cinémathèque Française on July 10, 1959.
