Larry Malfroid was my classical guitar teacher in college. He is one of those people who changed the direction of my life. Up until that point I played only the electric guitar. It was his enthusiasm love of the instrument that really inspired me to pursue the classical guitar. It was because of him that I became a music major and then went on to study composition. I still play the electric guitar but without Larry Malfroid, I probably would have become an accountant or who knows what else. Bonsoir Adrian, je lorgne sur une paire de Richelieu bordeaux avec un empiecement en velours noir sur les lacets (Malfroid, modèle Landaulet). Comment ça se porte? C'est facile à assortir ou on est coincé sur du costume bleu? Vous portez ce type de souliers? Merci pour vos conseils !

I know I keep posting these, but hang around a second to read?

Last month I reached out to a rescue who does vouchers for low-cost medical care for animals. All three females I had spayed had reactions to the sutures they used and got bad infections that spread through their whole abdomens. I didn’t go back to the vet who did the surgery as I no longer had trust in them. I saw my vet who work with me a lot on cutting prices and stuff, but I’m still close to $400 in debt from all of the vet bills I’ve racked up in the last month. They just had their staples removed today, and are actually doing amazing now, but my birthday is January 24th and it’s my goal and 21st birthday wish to have these bills paid off by then. Any little bit helps honestly, and I post updates frequently! I’m currently in contact with the rescue who got me the vouchers as I’m unable to contact the vet. I’ll post in the comments with any further results if anyone wants to follow.

The Princess and the Peasant: Class Representation in the Disney Princess Line

When creating a film about royalty one has to show class separation.  A royal hierarchy calls for there to be an upper class and a lower class because the rulers reside over their subjects.  Disney movies, especially princess movies, are notorious for showing class distinctions.  They are more apt to tell stories about upper class characters than lower class.  “Thirty percent of primary characters in the films analyzed were from upper-class families…and approximately one-fourth were in the upper-middle class (Hollywood Reporter).”  Poor people are rarely featured as main characters, which leaves lower class fans struggling to connect to characters. “Four percent of the total number of primary characters, meaning three main players in the 100 children's movies surveyed, could be classified as "poor." In comparison, roughly 25 percent of American children live in poverty (Hollywood Reporter).”

Disney princesses themselves range from members of the working class to the upper class.  Belle, the daughter of an inventor, is a member of the working class because her father practices a trade. Cinderella becomes a servant to her wealthy step family because she has no money of her own.  Snow White, who is royalty, lives with dwarves who labor in the mines day in and day out.  Aladdin lives on the streets and must prove his worth in order to marry Princess Jasmine. These are just a few examples of class representation in Disney princess films that can have positive and negative connotations.    

Disney likes to show a working class story, but they are not always accurate.  This could be because, “Walt Disney, who himself climbed “from rags to riches”, would fiercely preach the “American work ethic (Malfroid).”  The working class is made to look very desirable, like in the case of Belle and the dwarves. They head off to work every day with a smile on their face and a spring in their step.  The characters who live in this class seem to be very content being there. "I didn't expect the working class to be treated in such a jolly way. In some ways, this is great, but in other ways, it is saying that we don't have to worry about inequality because the working class is happy with where they are.”  Making the working class appear as content as the rich makes it seem like they are equal. This description of the working class is good for a children’s movie, but it doesn’t not represent the class struggle truthfully.  In real life, people can work hard their whole life and still struggle to live pay check to pay check.  Generally, the working class isn’t desirable and people try to escape its cycle and achieve wealth.    

In terms of class representations effects on viewers, it’s been found that movies can have a lasting effect on younger fans.  “Studies have shown that by the time kids are 12, they have internalized a lot of American ideas about class...  Parents don’t really like talking to their kids about class, so the movies these kids watch are how they get their ideas on class (The Guardian).”  Disney films can be used an educational tool to subconsciously plant opinions about society in viewers minds.  It is good that Disney shows a positive working class because it teaches kids that being lower class can be honorable and bring happiness. "If you showed these poor characters as trying really hard and still not being able to get ahead, then parents would see that as hard work doesn't pay off, which may be a troubling idea for little kids (Hollywood Reporter).”  Because the working class is happy, they are successful, and teach kids to work hard like they do.
