It’s appropriate that you asked about it, Gabe, since it’s inspired by this one of your asks! It’s the first scene of the scenario, where history student Hob discovers that his hot professor knows all about his camboy side-gig. I’m calling Dream 'Professor Endels' in this, mainly due to a typo that I liked so I stuck with it 😂

“Sit,” says Professor Endels, gesturing to the chair opposite. Hob sits, dropping his messenger bag to the floor and folding his hands in his lap. He folds his hands neatly on the desk. “You think I can recommend one such as you for a job working with impressionable young minds? After what you’ve done?” His eyebrows are raised, effortlessly expressing his incredulity and disdain for Hob’s ambitions. Hob’s stomach sinks, weighed down by the cold stone of dread and disbelief that’s appeared at Professor Endels’ icy words. His mouth gapes open as he mentally scrabbles for words to refute whatever it is that he’s being accused of. Did he accidentally plagiarise his most recent assignment? Did he get filmed doing that impression of Prof Endels when he got drunk last week? Did Professor Endels find out about… No. No. He can’t have. Hob has been so careful. He knows he was risking everything, but he was desperate and he needed the money… His thoughts are cut off when Professor Endels turns the laptop around to face him, and presses play on the video on screen. He’s turned the volume back up, so Hob can clearly hear the whines and moans the image of him on screen is making as he works a fat dildo into his arse. He was on his hands and knees on the bed, arranged so his face isn’t visible in the footage, but from the twist of his torso it was clear that he’d turned his head to look over his shoulder and read the comments appearing in the chat.  It was unmistakably Hob’s voice reading some of the comments aloud - “Oh you like that, @BigBoy_69? 2020 Reading Challenge - E-Book Edition!

According to Amazon, I have exactly 294 e-books currently sitting in my Kindle library. 

Granted, some of these books have been read and are being saved for a second (or third, or fourth) re-read, but when it comes down to it, that number is around 40 books, give or take. 

Which means I still have over 250 books that need to be read. 

And it’s not like I haven’t tried! There are plenty of titles that, when opened up, will go to the last place I left off - that being chapter 5, or maybe chapter 10. But sometimes life gets in the way. Or a sudden interest in another author. Or a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But whatever the reason may be, it’s over 250 books that haven’t been read. Challenge accepted! 

For 2020, I commit to not buying any new books to add to my Kindle library (checking out books from the library is ok, because you’ve gotta support your local library!), and instead focus on the books I already have. So no addition of 99 cent books, or Kindle Unlimited books, or books that are suddenly 75% off. Only the books that I currently have. 

As the reading commences, and after the book is finished, I’ll update my list to indicate what has been completed, along with the date purchased, and a short review (or a reason I just couldn’t finish it at all).

Andy writ large

Several people have sent me links to the New Yorker article in which Ian Parker exposes author/editor Dan Mallory as having lied, gaslighted people, and engaged in other manipulative behaviors for many years in order to further his career. When confronted, Mallory tried to blame it all on mental illness. Anons have been discussing this on tf-talk and FFA, noting that Mallory sounds a lot like "the prestige drama version of Thanfiction", and I have to agree. I've written several times in the past about people who reminded me and others of Andy (Aiden Sinclair/Richard Outhier, Travis Aaron Wade, Kevin Spacey, Teri Hoffman and Tyler Deaton), and the similarities in this case are even more striking than any of those. So here are the things that stood out to me in Parker's article. This is a pretty long list, so I've broken it down into several sections for readability.

Generally manipulative behavior:

Tom Scott described Mallory, at their first meeting, as being self-assured and nonchalant in a way that (to me, as a reader) seemed studied. He also said that Mallory casually bragged about his success in a way that left him feeling charmed rather than nonplussed or annoyed. This matches up with several accounts I've read of people’s first impressions of Andy when he was in the LotR fandom.

Both Andy and Dan Mallory tend to get personal with strangers quickly and to overshare – e.g., the "lighthearted debate" at a festival in which Mallory abruptly got serious and spoke frankly (lying) about his alleged history of ECT. This kind of oversharing tends to elicit sympathy from listeners and to make them feel that this person is being genuine and vulnerable with them, which makes them more inclined to open up in turn. This is something that Andy was doing as recently as last year, but he misjudged his audience some of the time and they just found it off-putting.

They frequently engage in self-deprecating humor, which is endearing and encourages others to let down their guard. These days, Andy incorporates glib, jokey references to his past into this part of his shtick (e.g., "someday over a glass of wine, I'll tell you about the time I accidentally started a hobbit cult"), so it also serves to inoculate listeners against anything negative they might hear about him from other people.

Both tend to zero in on and exploit good-natured people who give others the benefit of the doubt.

Both pride themselves on (and brag about) using charisma and "wit" to talk their way into places/situations for which they are underqualified, that they can't afford, etc. See Andy’s remarks about getting "gorgeous service" at high-end boutiques based on charisma alone, and the commencement speech in which Mallory bragged about talking his way into a thesis program without doing the qualifying work.

These men hate to be in anything that could be construed as a subordinate role, although this is one area in which Andy is arguably more subtle than Dan Mallory.

Both enjoy hiding in plain sight—in Mallory’s case, through his novel.

Both have long histories of engaging in gaslighting, lying, and manipulation for their own benefit and/or entertainment.

Acquaintances have described both men's behavior as performative and calculating.

Neither could let go of their former victims, but instead kept contacting them to try and draw them back in—Andy did this with Abbey after she left him in Virginia, and Mallory did this with his former colleagues in London.

Lying liars who lie:

Both men have lied repeatedly and extensively about their physical and mental health histories, and can't be bothered to keep their stories straight. In Andy’s case, this has included claiming various psychiatric diagnoses with symptoms corresponding to their Hollywood portrayals, telling stories about allergic reactions and injuries that were wildly exaggerated at best, and more. Mallory told ever-changing stories of psychiatric treatments that worked either very well or not at all, blamed his chronic lying on Bipolar II (a claim that would be ludicrous if it weren't so offensive), repeatedly claimed to have brain tumors and/or cancer, and told a variety of lies over the years about family members' illnesses and deaths that never happened.

Both have lied about having mysterious, incurable ailments that would definitely kill them within a set number of years—which was prone to change—but that conveniently didn't stop Mallory from working when he felt like it, or Andy from traveling anywhere his friends would pay for.

Each of them has told a multitude of easily disprovable lies about his education, his family, and his personal history.

Both claimed to have been abused as children, though Andy told long, graphically detailed stories about it and Mallory doesn’t seem to have gone further than making an implication.

Each has lied about a younger sibling's identity: Mallory impersonated his brother in a long series of emails to former colleagues about his alleged ill health, and Andy told his friends that his sister was responsible for everything he'd done to people as Amy Player.

Both have inadvertently revealed themselves via verbal, syntactical, or spelling idiosyncrasies when impersonating others online.

Both impersonated other people to chronicle their fake or severely exaggerated illnesses and to describe their plucky/humorous behavior during alleged hospital stays.

Both faked accents—Andy was "Irish" and Mallory was "British".

Both have claimed, directly and by implication, to have connections and insider knowledge of Hollywood, the film industry, and/or screenwriting.

Aside from all the outright lies they've told, both men have engaged in lies of omission, deliberately not correcting others' misunderstandings or misperceptions about them.

When their lies were exposed, both claimed that their accusers were lying because they were sexually attracted to them and had either been rejected (as Mallory said of the CEO of a publishing house), or were disturbed by the attraction (as Andy said of Turimel).

Both tend to double down when confronted about an obvious lie, and then try to steer the conversation to other topics.

Miscellany:

Each is the eldest son of affluent parents.

Mallory's fascination with Tom Ripley is reminiscent of Andy's admiration of Frank Abagnale.

Both were involved in their college theatre departments. For Andy, this is true of his attendance at VCU, at Thomas Nelson Community College, and at Christopher Newport University almost twenty years ago. (I’m not sure what he did at George Mason. He wasn't there for long.)

The work of both men is, shall we say, "derivative". In Andy's case, this applies more to his art. I am not familiar with Mallory's work other than The Woman in the Window and a handful of quotations from essays and e-mails he's written, but it appears that in TWW, he may have ripped off a novel by Sarah A. Denzil that was published six months before he started trying to sell his book, and has almost certainly ripped off "Copycat", a movie from 1995 (see New Yorker article).

Mallory’s focus on process and strategy in writing, the way his own voice overwhelms that of the narrator, and Parker's description of TWW as "a thriller excited about getting away with writing a thriller" all reminded me of the experience of reading DAYD and the way Andy has often talked about writing and storycraft.

Many former associates of each man were at least somewhat aware of how sketchy they were, but were unable or unwilling to call them out.

A surprising number of people, despite knowing they've been lied to repeatedly and at great length, still like both of them quite a lot.

Both Andy's and Dan Mallory's parents seem like kind, decent people who love their sons and want to believe the best of them.

Specific lines from the "New Yorker" article that made me think of Andy:

A former colleague on Mallory: "'If there was something that he wanted and there was a way he could position himself to get it, he would. If there was a story to tell that would help him, he would tell it.'"

"He’d begin with rapturous flattery…and then shift to self-regard. He wittily skewered acquaintances and seemed always conscious of his physical allure."

Author Sophie Hannah: "Mallory 'renewed my creative energy,' she said. He had a knack for 'giving feedback in the form of praise for exactly the things I’m proud of.'"

"Speaking in Colorado last January, Mallory quoted a passage from Kay Redfield Jamison’s memoir, 'An Unquiet Mind,' in which she describes repeatedly confronting the social wreckage caused by her bipolar episodes—knowing that she had 'apologies to make.' … In more recent public appearances, Mallory seems to have dropped this reference to wreckage. Instead, he has accepted credit for his courage in bringing up his mental suffering, and he has foregrounded his virtues."

Mallory: "It's been horrific, not least because, in my distress, I did or said or believed things I would never ordinarily say, or do, or believe—things of which, in many instances, I have absolutely no recollection."

‘My little pony’ 👀

This is the one WIP doc that is just a couple of bullet points and a lot of ✨vibes✨ so no actual snippet of this one I’m afraid.

It’s for a Hobstruction fic inspired by the centaur shenanigans in @amielot's thread in the @mr-sadman server, and @temve’s fic Leaves of Grass and Feet of Clay in particular. Temve wrote about Hob being dominated by Destruction while wearing a harness, and my brain wondered… what does pony play look like when you’re a centaur?

Destruction aka Ollie visits Hob one day but Hob isn’t home, and Ollie accidentally finds Hob’s harness. Not so unusual for a centaur who helps out the nearest village with labour in exchange for the food and supplies he can’t grow himself, except for the extra straps designed to fasten Hob’s arms behind his back, and the modified bridle he’s made for his own head. To Hob’s surprise, Ollie isn’t disgusted or repelled, but actually interested. They’ve fooled around before, but never like this. Ollie is thoughtful, and promises that it’s something they can explore.

Over the next few weeks, they experiment with Hob learning to become a plow horse, trotting over poles, and getting to be Ollie’s pretty little pony with braids in his mane. And of course, getting well and truly fucked with a healthy dose of breeding kink thrown in for good measure.

I've already answered the Gaulcienne ask (here if anyone missed it), so here's the time bomb challenge wip!

So, this one is based on an actual subreddit (r/timebombchallenge) where people post clues for strangers to find everything from naked pictures of themselves to a chance to have sex. Basically Hob (u/hunter-hob) is going to end up racing another user (u/-the-magus-) to crack the clues to get the chance to enact Dream’s (u/hunted-dream) rape fantasy. It might be a bit dark for some people but it’s entirely consensual and exactly what Dream wants.

My inspo for the pics that Dream posted in his first challenge is from @awalkonthewildside who is absolutely gorgeous and my headcanon for Dream in lingerie.

Since I’ve only written 1k of initial setup with a fair bit of exposition explaining how it works, you may as well have the lot (and since it's a wip, it's still got at least one 'XXXXX' where I haven't found the right word yet):

Hob settles onto the sofa and opens his laptop, his favourite subreddit loading automatically. To most people he’s a respectable member of the local community, someone trustworthy and reliable, someone they could turn to if they felt bullied or harassed on campus, so he carefully keeps his online persona well hidden. He spends a lot of his time outside his studies on various kink forums, most of them dealing with real-world consequences that most kinksters would shy away from. 

One of his favourites is on his screen right now. The subreddit r/timebombchallenge, where users risk having their naked photos and explicit videos found by hunters like Hob, either physical flash drives to be located after a real world treasure hunt, or an online drive to be unlocked if the hunter can unravel a series of clues. Or, for those who need even more risky behaviours – some users promise to submit to a physical punishment for losing the challenge.

Hob’s eyes light up when he recognises the username at the top of the screen. He knows exactly what user u/hunted-dream looks like, can still picture the slow, sensual striptease he’d unlocked from his first time bomb challenge. u/hunted-dream had slipped open a black chiffon robe, revealing smooth, pale, unblemished skin, decorated with delicate jade green lingerie and elegant stockings. He’d stroked long, clever fingers over himself, teasing at the edges of the barely-there garments, before turning and snapping the garter straps against his lean arse. There had been more photographs too, all artfully shot, as u/hunted-dream bent and stretched and posed, teasing Hob with his lithe body and XXXXX bendiness. One of Hob’s favourites had been a frontal shot, revealing u/hunted-dream’s soft cock and hairless balls encased in a lace bodysuit. The man was clearly intelligent too – one of the most challenging puzzles Hob had seen on the subreddit yet, and one that had actually had him having to research online to complete at least one of them.

The title is unusual. Age and gender, obviously. Red means that this time, real, actual, life-ruining information is up for grabs. Full-on blackmail material, the kind that could destroy careers and relationships. u/hunted-dream is definitely escalating since his previous sharing of ‘green’ rated tasteful nudes and arty videos. The part that most catches Hob’s attention though, is the categorisation of the type of hunt on offer. ‘Online’ was usually just a series of shortened weblinks to decipher, resulting in a link to a private photo cache to download. ‘Mobile’ meant that it was a physical hunt, with a flash drive of pictures and information being carried around on the user’s person. In this case, Hob guesses that he’ll have to follow online clues to work out u/hunted-dream’s physical location to challenge him for the drive. The part that has him leaning forward in anticipation though, is the word ‘ticket’. That’s where things are going to get really interesting. A ticket was a different kind of reward. An extra level of control that the hunter can win. Most likely, it’s going to be an offer of sex. Hob clicks the post and reads on.

Hello, r/timebombchallenge. 

I hope you enjoyed my first challenge. Only two of you made it through my maze of puzzles – I wonder if more of you will make it if the stakes are somewhat higher?

This time, as well as the online clues, you’ll need to come and find me, if you can. Once you’ve caught me, you get to claim your prize. For most of you, that would be the flash drive containing my ID, my employment details, and my family’s contact information, as well as a series of explicit videos showing my full face as well as using a series of toys that will leave no one in doubt of my proclivities. For some of you, those braver and more honest about your desires than the rest – maybe you’ll get to make your dreams come true.

The rest of the message… the rest of the message is in Greek. Because of course it is! Of course this fucker who’d had him researching Latin poetry to access photos that barely counted as soft-core porn expects him to be able to read Greek for this next challenge. Hob grins and shakes his head as he copies and pastes the rest of the text into Google Translate. He has the whole weekend free, and he’s more than willing to travel if it means getting his hands on that cocktease of a twink. He hits enter on the webpage, only to find that apparently u/hunted-dream has posted half a page of absolute gibberish. 

Can’t be that easy, can it Hobsie?, he asks himself as he pastes the text into another document. If he’s honest, the pictures are only half of the appeal of this particular user. He’s always been attracted to intelligence and humour over just looks, and that this guy shares his kinks as well? This is the most fun Hob’s had in ages. u/hunted-dream is an arrogant brat by the tone of his messages across the whole of reddit, and Hob’s just itching to truly put him in his place.

Three hours later and Hob’s only cracked the first two parts of the code. The Greek text had turned out to be transliterated Latin, a section from Ovid’s Metamorphoses of all things. Hob’s Latin is rusty, but once he knew what he was looking at he’d managed to get the first weblink, which teased him with another arty nude photograph and this time, a series of numbers. Hob had groaned at that – as a PhD candidate in early modern history, he was at least familiar with Ovid who’d still been influential at that time, but anything with numbers or a hint of mathematics always threatened to bring him out in hives. Fortunately, it wasn’t a mathematical code but a cipher hiding a passage from Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus.

This one was *supposed* to be five times Hob gets to live his kinky fantasies in the Dreaming, and one time in the Waking, but I've already written and posted one of the five times as a standalone. I'm very curious about the Hobrinthian Part 2 wip 👀👀

I had an idea about which way this was going to go. The Corinthian is having other ideas (he wants to do *everything* in one fic!), so we're currently in negotiation 😂

The night air is cool and refreshing as Hob steps out of the back door that leads to his flat and lights up his cigarette. He doesn’t officially smoke anymore, not since they banned smoking indoors, but between marking undergrad essays, revisions on his latest paper for publication, and the boiler in his flat needing urgent repairs, he needs something to help relax him before he even considers attempting to sleep tonight. He finishes up and stubs the cigarette out in one of the ashtrays on the pub tables, and turns to head back inside.

An arm across his shoulder, wrapping around his chest and pulling him backwards into a solid body, arrests his movement. Hob freezes, instincts kicking in as he wraps one fist around the other and prepares to drive his elbow back into his assailant’s stomach. He hesitates only when he registers two things – first, the line of cold sharp steel pressing against his throat just underneath his jawline, and second, the cocky Southern drawl in his ear that purrs, “Hello, sweetheart. Didya miss me?”
