the event that triggered mal’s crush on richie went like this:

mal [having just rewatched dps]: you know i would love to date someone who really embodies that kinda stuff, a true romantic-type who is still chill and stuff

richie: *naruto runs by and eats shit by tripping over his own feet*

so i came up with a few but here were my top two contenders:

general info:

- east/southeast asian american

- bisexual and genderfluid (he/she/they)

- only a month and a half younger than max (18)

- is friends with steph more than the rest of the popular kids

- is “friends” with all of the popular kids because of max, but would much rather hang out/around the nerds

- has some of the gift that mainly manifests in prophetic poetry (nighthawks fly/jägerman falls/when the hatchet swings toward us/upon who do we call?)

- dabbles in the occult, but not too seriously (tarot readings, crystals, ghost hunting but not 100% in their belief in these things)

- was adopted at age 8, definitely favored by their parents but also isn’t completely certain the jägermans didn’t just adopt them to appear more virtuous

- max is both protective and antagonistic towards them

- they’re also protective and antagonistic towards max bc they know how it is at home for him but also is totally aware how much of a dick he is to everyone else

- they also are slightly aware of the fact that they are only tolerated around the popular kids (besides steph) because they’re his sibling (“i’m a jägerman, max is the jägerman.)

- they 100% are kinda a little into richie (in a “his autistic swag and utter lack of rizz has bewitched me” sort of way)

- in timelines where miss holloway isn’t dead: works at miss retro’s

now onto them in npmd:

- sits in between richie and grace in highschool is killing me

- sings “like a jock he cliches” in literal monster pt 1 as he walks across the stage

- proper intro is in the flick-it ticket scene

- tries to get max to leave richie alone (“c’mon maxie, don’t you have better things to do with your time? you’re already gonna be late for class.”)

- rolls his eyes at kyle and jason making fun of grace but also immediately exits when max starts thirsting over her (in a “i hear enough of this at home, i’m out. cannot watch you fall on your face about this” way)

- is with steph and the cheerleaders when they’re talking about steph getting stood up by pete

- is at least a little into how intimidating steph is when threatening ruth and richie into telling her where pete is

- joins them in the boys’ bathroom, apologizes to pete on behalf of max (“as a jägerman, sorry— about your eye, and my brother, and the fact that i’m related to him.”)

- “that’s some cool kid privilege right there.” “yeah, they’re not wrong steph.”

- visible disgust at grace saying max “[strikes] lust in the souls of the innocent”

- is totally in on the plan to scare max (“he may be my brother, but maxwell jägerman is a class a fucking dickwad.”)

- “oh he hates ghosts. ever since we were kids and i convinced him one lived in the garbage disposal.”

- agrees with pete about the waylon place making them feel uneasy, but it’s more the vibe than the structure of the house

- bully the bully: “he’s just a nerd in disguise” “i know that’s right.” [i’m definitely on the max is a closeted theater kid train]

- richie: *talking film specs* mal: *disproportionately infatuated* “you know a lot about this stuff huh?”

- is genuinely happy when max gets all excited about the prank bc she can tell he’s being genuine

- total shock and denial when max falls and dies (“he-he can’t be dead! it’s maxie, he’s like invincible!”)

- goes right into humor to try to deflect (“we just murdered a football star right before the big game!” “fuck! my brother’s dead and we’re gonna lose to clivesdale?!?! this is the worst day ever.”)

- bury the bully: “this is a lot.” “yeah, even for me.”

- “it’s been…weird at home. i feel…guiltier about not feeling guilty than about what we did. that’s usually wrong right?”

- between go, go nighthawks and the locker room scene: “hey, uh, shitlips! i know you’re not supposed to talk in the mascot costume so don’t say anything. but since you’re not under constant threat of swirlies anymore, you should maybe try asking me to homecoming. after the game?”

- he gets called into the interrogation scene late but just in time to find out that richie died

- grace accuses her of telling about max (“why would i incriminate myself?”)

- “grace…what are you thinking?” “if she starts snapping again, i’m out.”

- when they dig up the black book, they feel almost physically ill (“i feel worse about this than being in the waylon place guys.”)

- “i’ll try luring max away while you guys get to the school. hopefully there’s enough of my brother in there that keeps him from killing me. at least long enough to buy you some time.”

- max throws in “you turned my own sibling against me!” when attacking steph at the school

- attends homecoming (“never thought i’d be a homecoming kinda person, but this is nice.”

ok now that i’ve gotten to finally watch workin boys i can confidently say

mal would’ve been there in the row behind richie and grace to talk about how awesome it was that ruth got a part but would’ve moved to the back row once the show started “just in case max magically decides to get back into the world of theater and show up”

maybe he throws in a half-sarcastic “you did a great job, babes” when richie is talking abt the photoshop on ruth’s headshot

- mal really likes how richie over-enunciates certain letters bc it reminds them of how they talk when they’re trying not to stutter

- clothing swaps constantly, mainly button ups

- richie tried to get dinner with mal at pasqualli’s once but he refused out of principle, they went to miss retro’s instead

- COUPLE! COSPLAYS!

- they get each other pins (for mal’s jacket and richie’s vest)

- mal walks richie to class

- every time they watch a movie together they film nerd out

- younger siblings that are the same age as their older siblings solidarity

- that being said, mal does refer to trevor as richie’s older brother sometimes

- mal helps richie re-anime-ify his hair post football games bc it gets messed up in the mascot costume

- derailing dnd sessions to flirt in character

- richie will sometimes use markers to color in mal’s tattoos

- mal buys richie a clip-on fan for his backpack to help with his overactive sweat glands

- milkshakes “on the house” (they come out of mal’s paycheck) with two straws even though mal is on the clock and not drinking the milkshake

as a blue hair richie lipschitz truther i would like to put forth this mal x richie scenario (i really need to come up with a ship name for them):

when richie first dyes his hair blue it’s all splotchy and green in places (as a vast majority of those who have dyed their hair blue would be familiar with) and mal takes one look at it and is like “you poor thing. absolutely not. we’re fixing this.” and with their 5+ years of hair dye experience and very limited understanding of color theory manages to even out richie’s hair to a nice blue

i’m working on a short mal x richie thing that may or may not see the light of day but it’s very cute

it’s set in a timeline where miss holloway is alive (so not npmd) and takes place in miss retro’s

it’s really short (that’s the plan, it might end up longer)

- they don’t know shit about anime, but they will nod along to whatever richie says just to keep him taking

- his main nerd domains are literary, horror, basic chemistry, and d&d

- mallory-morgan isn’t her deadname, it’s a compromise they came up with when they came out to their parents, they used to be named after a jägerman ancestor and are now named after two other ones

- they just think mallory-morgan is a stupid long name

- he and max used to put on little shows for their parents/perform in junior pageants as a brother/sister duo before their dad started to impose the idea that those kinds of interests were “inappropriate for a young man” onto max

- their favorite movies include an american werewolf in london, jennifer’s body, dead poet’s society, and scott pilgrim vs the world

- she originally started working at miss retro’s to “channel some energy” (duke placed them there after a check in and an incident with his poetry) but now works there part-time of their own volition bc it super fucking vibes with them

- has a framed picture of the one time they managed to do a perfect titration in chem lab on their desk at home

- stopped seriously doing theater once max had completely renounced it; totally goes to auditions when hatchetfield high holds them but bombs on purpose

- has a psychogenic stutter (comes up in the scene prior to bury the bully) acquired from nearly drowning when he was younger

- got a black eye one halloween from scaring max while dressed as a sheet ghost

more random mal things:

- their “first partner” was kyle clauger in the 6th grade

- they literally kissed once (poorly) and held hands a few times over the course of 3 months

- this is part of the reason max forbid kyle from dating brenda

- the two of them are still friends though

- they’re close but mal hates how easily kyle goes along with whatever max wants

- sits in on theater rehearsals even though they’re not part of the shows

- he developed a distant friendship (really more of an acquaintanceship, the kind of friends you see in school but don’t hang out with anywhere else) with trevor and ruth

- went to watcher world as a kid, felt so unnerved she refused to go on any rides and sat on the bench nearest the exit till it was time to go home

- she still has friendship bracelets from when she and max were kids

- goes to every football game under the guise of supporting max, really just watches richie flail around as the mascot

- doesn’t have a drivers license so max has to drive them everywhere if they’re not walking or taking public transport

- only goes to pasqualli’s bc max is his ride home

- not a pie enjoyer, but will eat the pies at miss retro’s bc they are amazing

- bought a colorblock denim jacket (purple ofc) when they started to work at miss retro’s even though there’s no real uniform

- miss holloway gave him a nighthawks hat when they were first brought to the diner by duke

- totally thought lex foster was the coolest person at hatchetfield high when she still went there

- lex was 100% a part of their queer awakening

- once spent the night in the waylon house for a dare, hated every second of it

- smokes but is not part of the smoke club

- mains shy guy in mario kart

- owns that gender fluid mug from the target pride collection

- saw beetlejuice on broadway for their sweet 16th

- there is at least one timeline in which they plan to/already have promposed to richie while cosplaying as hatsune miku
