8 Tips to Guard Your PC from Viruses and Malware

It may be the start of a new year, but a relic of an older fraud is getting the attention of internet users.
The FBI recently stated a scam involving computers that begin on the phone you receive a call from a caller who claims to work for a "major software company." (Hmm...wonder which one?) They claim that your system is sending error messages to them on the Web and that they've identified an infection. There's no problem: All you need do is pay the fee, and they'll fix the issue remotely on your system by applying antivirus programs to it.
If the person calling you knows the credit card number and access to your computer, they can't eliminate viruses but install them.
In October, The Federal Trade Commission cracked down on the same scam, which charged computer users between $49 and $400 for the ability to "remove" Malware from their computers. The agency said "tens of thousands" of computer users were victims of the scam.
Read malwarebytes notifications won't go away
The method to avoid these frauds is easy enough: don't provide strangers with your credit card information or computer access. However, let's look at other ways you can defend yourself against Malware and viruses:
1. Make sure your software is up to date
Software manufacturers such as Microsoft and Oracle frequently upgrade their software to address bugs that hackers could take advantage of. On Sunday, Oracle released an update for its Java software that fixes the security flaw hackers might have exploited to take over computers through Malware.
The patch to the software was released after the Department of Homeland Security sent out an advisory this week regarding the security flaw that recommended users of computers remove their Java plugin in the Web browsers.
2. Beware of clicking on links contained in emails.
The best rule of thumb is If you don't recognize the email's sender, do not click on any hyperlinks within the email. Microsoft claims that 44.8 percent of Windows virus infections occur because the computer user clicks on something.
3. Use free antivirus software
There is no need to pay for security software to safeguard your PC or an annual subscription to keep you updated with the most recent virus security. If you're a Windows person, Microsoft Security Essentials is free. Avast is another free antivirus program. Software.
Read our article Antivirus Software is a Waste of Money for ideas.
4. Backup your computer
Do you regularly back up your data on your personal computer? If not - as well, 29 percent of computer users fall in this category - you're no protection against calamities that range from a failed hard drive to the destruction of your home. If you're concerned about your data, back it up.
Three main backup choices include an external hard drive or online backup service cloud storage. Utilize an online backup service such as Google Drive, and your documents will be constantly stored in the cloud. The price is just right: no cost for up to 5GB of data. For more information, read Online Storage Wars: Which Virtual Storage Is Best?
5. Make sure you use a secure password
A secure password is complex and includes various numbers, letters, and symbols. Some people will use the same password across all of their accounts. Make sure you avoid this habit.
The company provides password security; SplashData.com claims that the three most commonly used passwords are 123456 and 12345678. SplashData.com suggests avoiding using the same password/user name combination on multiple website logins.
When making passwords, make sure you use at least eight characters. Also, try using phrases separated by space marks or underscore to make them easier to remember, like "car_park_city?"
What's the best option? Utilize a no-cost service such as LastPass to manage and create your passwords. Only remember only one password: the one that unlocks the LastPass vault. After you've opened it up, LastPass will automatically log you into each website you visit that requires a password. It's a great tool - try it out.

6. Make use of a firewall
Even if you're running antivirus software does not mean you're equipped with the security of a firewall. Both PCs, as well as Macs, have the firewall built in. Make sure you check it's turned on.
7. Minimize downloads
Check that your Web internet browser's security settings are high sufficient to identify illegal downloads. If you're using Internet Explorer, the medium security setting is the minimum security level you can use.
8. Utilize an anti-pop-up blocker
Web browsers can be configured to block pop-ups and permit you to control the level of security required to accept pop-ups. The federal OnGuardOnline website recommends not clicking on links that appear within pop-up windows.
Even the most diligent computer users are still at risk of acquiring Malware. You should be wary of a computer virus if your computer has a slowdown or crashes, or it repeats errors.
Other indicators could be that the computer can't immediately shut down and restart. Other indicators include new tools you didn't install, a new homepage, or a laptop battery draining more quickly than it should.
If you think your computer is affected, ensure the security program is up-to-date, and then check the computer for Malware. If that doesn't fix the issue, you can type a query in your favorite search engine to discover forums where people have shared their experiences in combat and won similar battles.
What's the bottom thing to consider? Nowadays, protecting yourself from viruses as well as losing information is significantly easier than it was in the past and doesn't cost any money. Make a few moments today to make sure that you're secure. You'll be grateful that you took the time.

hi! when i try to download episodes from the mega folder it tells me that i have to pay to do that. do you know what i could do? <3
hi! yes, sadly mega has a free download limit of 5gb every 24h per ip-address, which is its main downside (i give you guys links with mega as a host because it's much harder for people to make nearly enough google drives for all of this, considering new google accounts now each need a verification via a real phone number. mega also has much better privacy protection in general)
about the download limit, there are a few things you can do: (below the cut because it got long)
1) download MEGAsync, mega's own cloud synchronisation tool, which you can find on their website here. this lets you save links and thereby queue the downloads, so you will not lose progress if you run out of download capacity for the day or shut down your computer in the middle of a download (like you would if you were downloading in the browser). also, whenever you have the programme open, it will automatically resume your download queue once your free account has capacity again. you do need to make a free account for this, but you can use a throwaway address like one from 10minutemail. just do not forget to note down the random e-mail address it gives you somewhere because you will still need to use it as your username anytime you log in.
2) use premium link generators. a premium link generator is a website that downloads any mega (or many other filehosters') links you give them through their own premium accounts on those hosting sites, then reuploads whatever it finds, and lets you download the file from their own website for free and at a high speed.
the link generator sites pay for those premium accounts with ads they show you, though, meaning you have to click through quite a few of them and several captchas to get your free link. for this, please make sure to have at least one adblocker (like adblock plus and ublock origin), and if you want to be cautious at least one antivirus plugin (like malwarebytes and avira), installed. there are some posts with good general privacy plugins floating about, i will add a link here if i find them again. when you click through the ~5-10 ads and captchas, there will be one page that will ask you to disable your adblocker - please only turn it off if you can't clear that site otherwise and turn it back on immediately after you have cleared that site. in general, also make sure to close any pop ups that open and pay attention to finding the correct continue/download buttons (though i've never really had fake ones, just mentioning it to be sure).
the only premium link generator that consistently works for me is uploadedpremiumlink.net. they give you an additional 5gb of downloads per day on mega if you are logged out, 10gb if you make an account. once again, you can use a throwaway mail address like from 10minutemail to make an account as long as you remember what your username and password is
3) use a vpn or some other way of changing your ip-adress. if you are not logged in, then the only way that mega determines that your 5gb are up is via your ip-address. if you can appear under another ip-address, it should give you a new 5gb of capacity, assuming somebody else hasn't also used that ip-address to download from mega in the same day. sadly, i can't really recommend you any free vpn services as i do not have any experience with any of them - but maybe others have some suggestions in the notes?
i hope this helps, at least a little bit! i also searched some reddit threads but couldn't verify any other options on there myself.
as always, please use any information i give you at your own discretion, and if anyone else has any suggestions, i'd love to hear them!!
#i hope i understood your question correctly!!#if not please feel free to send some more details like what you are trying to download and in which browser! <3#marty's service desk and request station#marty.txt

Think Paywallers care about you? They're fine threatening to put tracking software on your computer. :)
This image was sent to me from the lovely folks over in Dollhouse Mafia. Dollhouse Mafia being a group of anti-permapaywall pirates who release files that those creators have locked behind paywalls to the public for free. They recently had put out a form looking for some volunteers to help, and used the standard google form. What's interesting is what one of the responses was:
Now before you panic, chill out. I have two very good friends with years of cybersecurity experience and I "fact checked" these statements with both of them. They confirmed it's next to impossible to put any sort of tracking "program" within a .package file format. (There are creators who track .package files but that is more related to data within the .package file being altered and them keeping a list of which patron got what altered data files. Similar to banks putting dye packs in certain stacks of bills.) They also have zero clue how viruses/spyware/other things actually work because basically a file has to be put on the computer and then has to be given instructions to run which is the problem. Because there's no way for those instructions to even get to a bit of code like that if it were in a .package file. [Also as a side bar, since the .package file format is honestly a format that is only used by EA for the sims games and is basically their proprietary format, they'd be suuuuuper pissed if someone managed to use their file format to distribute trojans/malware/viruses, even for a "supposedly good" cause.]
Also there's also the fact that this person said all this crap about piracy being "illegal" while misquoting EA's EULA while threatening to install spyware:
(Source: HERE) Needless to say, I can personally confirm that the stuff obtained from DHM is safe as far as tracking programs are concerned. I can't promise other places on the web are 100% safe/foolproof so obviously use caution when browsing elsewhere and have a good malware detector like malwarebytes/etc.
But I want to drive home the point that someone who is a paywaller/paywall supporter was so "threatened" by a group of pirates that they literally decided to make the baseless threat that they were going to install SPYWARE on innocent people's computers. Spyware that's highly illegal. Spyware that can give them banking information. Personal photos. Business conversations. Medical information. Cell phone numbers. Social Security Numbers. Logins to tons of important websites....all because they were tracking keystrokes or able to see what you are able to view on your screen. Compare that to the people on the other side of the coin. Myself and others who are fighting against this are here posting information and facts. We aren’t “threatening” anyone’s safety. We aren’t calling up people’s jobs in real life trying to get them fired. We don’t have to hide behind bullying anon asks or sock-puppets. We are here…posting in the public eye with everyone knowing who we are and what our stance is. And we don’t have to get our hands dirty to do so. So before you support this paywall behavior…think about who is representing it.

Spam
Spam definition
Spam is any kind of unwanted, unsolicited digital communication that gets sent out in bulk. Often spam is sent via email, but it can also be distributed via text messages, phone calls, or social media.
What does spam stand for?
Spam is not an acronym for a computer threat, although some have been proposed (stupid pointless annoying malware, for instance). The inspiration for using the term “spam” to describe mass unwanted messages is a Monty Python skit in which the actors declare that everyone must eat the food Spam, whether they want it or not. Similarly, everyone with an email address must unfortunately be bothered by spam messages, whether we like it or not.
If you’re interested in the origins of spam in greater detail, see the history of spam section below.
Types of spam
Read More
Spammers use many forms of communication to bulk-send their unwanted messages. Some of these are marketing messages peddling unsolicited goods. Other types of spam messages can spread malware, trick you into divulging personal information, or scare you into thinking you need to pay to get out of trouble.
Email spam filters catch many of these types of messages, and phone carriers often warn you of a “spam risk” from unknown callers. Whether via email, text, phone, or social media, some spam messages do get through, and you want to be able to recognize them and avoid these threats. Below are several types of spam to look out for.
Phishing emails
Phishing emails are a type of spam cybercriminals send to many people, hoping to “hook” a few people. Phishing emails trick victims into giving up sensitive information like website logins or credit card information.
Adam Kujawa, Director of Malwarebytes Labs, says of phishing emails: “Phishing is the simplest kind of cyberattack and, at the same time, the most dangerous and effective. That is because it attacks the most vulnerable and powerful computer on the planet: the human mind.”
Email spoofing
Spoofed emails mimic, or spoof, an email from a legitimate sender, and ask you to take some sort of action. Well-executed spoofs will contain familiar branding and content, often from a large well-known company such as PayPal or Apple. Common email spoofing spam messages include:
A request for payment of an outstanding invoice
A request to reset your password or verify your account
Verification of purchases you didn’t make
Request for updated billing information
Tech support scams
In a tech support scam, the spam message indicates that you have a technical problem and you should contact tech support by calling the phone number or clicking a link in the message. Like email spoofing, these types of spam often say they are from a large technology company like Microsoft or a cybersecurity company like Malwarebytes.
If you think you have a technical issue or malware on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, you should always go to the official website of the company you want to call for tech support to find the legitimate contact information. Remote tech support often involves remote access to your computer to help you, and you don’t want to accidentally give that access to a tech support scammer.
Current event scams
Hot topics in the news can be used in spam messages to get your attention. In 2020 when the world was facing the Covid-19 pandemic and there was an increase in work-from-home jobs, some scammers sent spam messages promising remote jobs that paid in Bitcoin. During the same year, another popular spam topic was related to offering financial relief for small businesses, but the scammers ultimately asked for bank account details. News headlines can be catchy, but beware of them in regards to potential spam messages.
Advance-fee scams
This type of spam is likely familiar to anyone who has been using email since the 90s or 2000s. Sometimes called “Nigerian prince” emails as that was the purported message sender for many years, this type of spam promises a financial reward if you first provide a cash advance. The sender typically indicates that this cash advance is some sort of processing fee or earnest money to unlock the larger sum, but once you pay, they disappear. To make it more personal, a similar type of scam involves the sender pretending to be a family member that is in trouble and needs money, but if you pay, unfortunately the outcome is the same.
Malspam
Short for “malware spam” or “malicious spam,” malspam is a spam message that delivers malware to your device. Unsuspecting readers who click on a link or open an email attachment end up with some type of malware including ransomware, Trojans, bots, info-stealers, cryptominers, spyware, and keyloggers. A common delivery method is to include malicious scripts in an attachment of a familiar type like a Word document, PDF file, or PowerPoint presentation. Once the attachment is opened, the scripts run and retrieve the malware payload.
Spam calls and spam texts
Have you ever received a robocall? That’s call spam. A text message from an unknown sender urging you to click an unknown link? That’s referred to as text message spam or “smishing,” a combination of SMS and phishing.
If you’re receiving spam calls and texts on your Android or iPhone, most major carriers give you an option to report spam. Blocking numbers is another way to combat mobile spam. In the US, you can add your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry to try to cut down on the amount of unwanted sales calls you receive, but you should still be alert to scammers who ignore the list.
How can I stop spam?
While it may not be possible to avoid spam altogether, there are steps you can take to help protect yourself against falling for a scam or getting phished from a spam message:
Spot phishing
All of us can fall victim to phishing attacks. We may be in a rush and click a malicious link without realizing. If a new type of phishing attack comes out, we may not readily recognize it. To protect yourself, learn to check for some key signs that a spam message isn’t just annoying—it’s a phishing attempt:
1. Sender’s email address: If an email from a company is legitimate, the sender’s email address should match the domain for the company they claim to represent. Sometimes these are obvious, like [email protected], but other times the changes are less noticeable, like [email protected] instead of paypal.com.
2. Missing personal information: If you are a customer, the company should have your information and will likely address you by your first name. A missing personal greeting alone isn’t enough to spot a phishing email, but it’s one thing to look for, especially in messages that say they are from a company with whom you do business. Receiving an email that says your account has been locked or you owe money is cause to worry, and sometimes we rush to click a link in order to fix the problem. If it’s phishing, that’s exactly what the sender wants, so be careful and check if the email is generic or addressed specifically to you.
3. Links: Beware of all links, including buttons in an email. If you get a message from a company with whom you have an account, it’s wise to log in to your account to see if there is a message there rather than just clicking the link in the message without verifying first. You can contact the company to ask if a suspicious message is legitimate or not. If you have any doubts about a message, don’t click any links.
4. Grammatical errors: We all make them, but a company sending out legitimate messages probably won’t have a lot of punctuation errors, poor grammar, and spelling mistakes. These can be another red flag to indicate that the email could be suspect.
5. Too-good-to-be-true offers: Many phishing messages pretend to be from large, well-known companies, hoping to ensnare readers who happen to do business with the company. Other phishing attempts offer something for free like cash or a desirable prize. The saying is often true that if something sounds too good to be true it probably is, and this can be a warning that a spam message is trying to get something from you, rather than give you something.
6. Attachments: Unless you are expecting an email with attachments, always be wary before opening or downloading them. Using anti-malware software can help by scanning files that you download for malware.
You can read even more about phishing emails and how to spot them on the Malwarebytes Labs blog.
Report spam
Email providers have gotten pretty good at filtering out spam, but when messages make it through to your inbox, you can report them. This is true for spam calls and text messages, as many carriers give you the ability to report spam as well. You can also choose to block the sender, often in the same step as reporting the message.
Reporting spam can help your email provider or phone service carrier get better at detecting spam. If legitimate emails get sent to your spam filter, you can report that they should not be marked as spam, and that also provides useful information on what should not be filtered. Another helpful step is to add senders you want to hear from to your contacts list proactively.
Use two factor-authentication (2FA)
With two-factor or multi-factor authentication, even if your username and password are compromised via a phishing attack, cybercriminals won’t be able to get around the additional authentication requirements tied to your account. Additional authentication factors include secret questions or verification codes sent to your phone via text message.
Install cybersecurity
In the event that you click a bad link or download malware sent to you via spam, good cybersecurity software will recognize the malware and shut it down before it can do any damage to your system or network. With products for home and business, Malwarebytes has got you covered wherever technology takes you.
