Snap review : Manamantha

(Yet another twitter review. You know what to expect)

Finally saw Manamantha, the Mohanlal-Gauthami Telugu starrer by Chandrasekhar Yeleti. I absolutely loved it.

I started off with a lot of expectations because -Yeleti film! (remember aithe and anukokunda oka roju ) -Mohanlal in Telugu! -Gauthami

The first fifteen minutes left me cold. It was "oh look, here's a character. Sweet kid alert! Funny guy right here". I was already prepared to write off this movie (Lalettan seemed a bit jumpy, everything seemed exaggerated and over-nice and a bit syrupy)

But when Mohanlal exchanged numbers with a local gunda who was ordered to nab his scooter, it left me with a genuine laugh and I sat up. Urvasi and Gauthami made some terrific house-wifey outings (the best comedy duo pair I've seen recently). It was lovely. Housewives always get a raw deal in Indian cinema. The male gaze either sees them as to be worshipped characters/comic caricatures. But the Gauthami-Urvasi roles thus far were so well written, that you laughed with them when they laughed at themselves. Big win. The college kid's initial scenes were terrible. But the character picked up. The school kid went from being sickly sweet to genuinely nice And then .. the movie just changed. Layers, textures, analogies, .... There was still humour, but it was not simplistic anymore. Oh, the acting (esp from the younger actors) is not perfect, but they can be forgiven..for the writing and the sincerity of the performances. The older actors.. shine. There's simply no other word for it. Each one gets a story, a journey, a search ..for something. And at the end, they mingle and mesh into each other in a tangled but absolutely lovely climax. I don't want to give out spoilers... but I do want to talk about two rather unusual aspects of the film, regarding its treatment of women. So yes, spoiler alert! Let's start with the college kid's story. It's a typical love story. He's a bright and nice chap, sees a girl, falls in love. Goes off after the girl. The girl seems nice too, she's obviously well off, friendly, not too inhibited/shy. They become pals. Heck, they even have an exchanged "accidental" kiss before they get to know each other (which gets filmed on some camera). These two find the video clip in her computer when they're hanging out. She laughs & deletes it. Guy asks her why..she seemed cool with it. She tells him "yeah, then we were strangers.. now we are friends.. No one who watches this will believe it". SHE DRAWS A LINE! Girl gets a visa to go to the US for higher studies, she's thrilled to bits. Gets the guy a parting gift (a bit of Gift of Magi right there). Guy in return proposes in public. Wow, for the first time in my life I've finally seen someone depict how awkward these things are. Crowd goes berserk, chanting "say yes, say yes". Hero is all smiles. Girl is tense, puzzled, and then .. angry. Tell me a single film where that has happened. I loved the whole scene, despite the amateur moments in the track. Lovely, simply lovely. Gauthami is of course ... the glue of the film, the tailor who stitches the fabrics of the others together. But they are all too busy. She gets a lovely track. But two outstanding scenes. She meets her old teacher who offers her "anything she wants". She begs for a nice job for her second class B.Com  pass husband, and proudly says he will be extremely good at it. Teacher laughs. When asked why, he says he is amused that she has forgotten herself, the first class topper The second brilliant scene ...is with Urvasi when Gauthami is getting ready to leave .. Bags are packed, she's ready to go...but not really. She says "I thought husband/son/daughter will tell me not to go but they are all happy for me. They can live without me .. but I can't.." That one scene brought tears to my eyes. It's easy for younger women to go chase their dreams/jobs/money, but what about those who have given up on them and acquired different ones. It's not that they lack talent, lack dreams or ambitions. But they have so generously given up so many things and invested in a family ..that breaking that tie ..in however small a way .. seems like sacrilege.

Manamantha - is truly a Yeleti film. I hope you watch it and like it as much as I did.

P.S - This is why you never judge a movie by its first half an hour. You give it time ..Patience is sometimes .. really rewarding

Story: Arjun's (Vishwant) life is heavily influenced by his father (Harsha Vardhan) since childhood. Even though he loves and gets married, Babay has been telling Arjun to stay away from girls since he was a child. Besides, some events in Arjun's life also make him stay away from girls. Such Arjun prepares to get married for his parents. But instead of the girl they saw, he decides to find a match for himself. What kind of girl does he want?, what qualities should she have? In order to know that, he leaves a good job and becomes a 'boyfriend for hire'. Why did Arjun have to change like that? Did he find a girl with the qualities he wanted? Who is Divya (Malavika Satheesan)? What changes did Arjun's life take with her arrival? That is the rest of the story.

Although the idea of ​​'boyfriend for hire' is good.. although there is scope for love, comedy and emotion scenes.. the film is not able to make you laugh or cry. Although the first half seemed to improve somewhat, the second half was very dull.

Can Mohan Lal Recover 5 Cr In Telugu?

With the advent of social media language, barriers are disappearing and other language films are watched by the audience across the country.  Other language actors are creating a market for themselves.  We all know that Malayalam Superstar Mohan Lal acted in Jr. NTR film ‘Janata Garage’ and became popular among the Telugu audience.   His next Telugu film ‘Manamantha’ also fared well at the box office.  With the newfound popularity, his Malayalam films started releasing in Telugu. His last film ‘Manyam Puli’ fared well in Telugu and it has collected 6 crores.  The Telugu distributor has acquired rights for Rs.1.5 crores and he reaped huge profits.  Now, his latest film ‘Odiyan’ released today.  The distributor has brought the Telugu version rights for Rs.5 crores.  It is interesting to see whether Mohan Lal is able to recover the amount or not.  The movie has to collect the amount in just a week’s time because a bunch of new films are slated for release on December 21 and they are carrying huge expectations.  Varun Tej’s ‘Antariksham’, Sharwanand’s ‘ Padi Padi Leche Manasu’, Kannada star Yash film ‘KGF’ are hitting the screens on 21st.  So, it is a tough task for Mohan Lal’s film to recover the amount unless it receives a good talk.
