It's one of the oldest buildings on Manitoulin Island, and is celebrated by locals for its food, nightlife and history — but the Anchor Inn can't welcome overnight guests until at least 2024, perhaps 2025.
All its rooms have been taken up by longer-term tenants who had nowhere else to go due to the housing shortage in the area.
William Lanktree, 73, is one of those tenants.
When he began searching for a new home in his area last year, he couldn't believe how much the housing landscape had changed on his native island.
"Unless you got $1,500 or $2,000 to pay for rent, where are you going to live?" he asks. [...]

Went to my local Pow Wow yesterday. Wanted to show off the gorgeous costers I bought from some amazing local Artists. The deer was designed by Rachel Ball but unfortunately I can't remember the name of the artist who designed the fox. And i can't read the signature on the art. Absolutely beautiful though.

A batch of photos from a day trip to Manitoulin Island I took recently. I found out that the Norisle is going to be scrapped, so I went a little overboard taking pictures of it.

“TWO INDIANS SENTENCED,” Kingston Daily Standard. July 21, 1922. ---- Sudbury, Ont., July 21. In Police Court Thomas Wabagezuz and Louis Shawanabin, two Indians who escaped from Burwash on April 10, were sentenced to two years each in Portsmouth penitentiary by Magistrate Brodie. When their term is up they will have to go back to Burwash to finish out terms for robbery and housebreaking, which they were serving at the time of their es- cape. Each man still has 22 months to serve. Wabagezuz and Shawanabin are known as two bad Indians and their fellow Redskins on the Manitoulin Reserve are said to be afraid of them. They were first sentenced at Gore Bay. Wabagezuz will be remembered as the Redskin who smashed up the jail in Little Current on the occasion of his arrest there about two years ago.

Part of my job at the moment is transcribing old Hudson’s Bay Company records from a trading post called La Cloche, and while I didn’t have time to visit the site itself, it was really cool to visit some of the places the factor wrote about, and to stand on top of this hill at golden hour, looking out across the north channel at the place where the post stood. To get a sense of the geography, as it were, although doing it by car still isn't a great way to understand - I’d like to do it by sailboat some day, and then again by canoe.

Bridal Veil Falls, a gem on Manitoulin Island, is a cascade of water that tumbles over a 35-foot limestone cliff, resembling a bride's veil. The falls, surrounded by lush greenery, create a tranquil pool below, suitable for wading or swimming.
