@badheart — continued from here ;;
Naturally, the Light Yagami reference doesn’t fail to slip her notice; in fact, Vivian would soon let out a soft snort upon seeing her devour a potato chip in such a highly exaggerated manner while shaking her head, as if saying ‘You are so silly’. “Now, you’re making me wanna re-watch Death Note again,” she then finally comments, amused beyond belief. When Fang mentions liking anything coconut flavored, however, her brows would shoot upwards in newfound interest.
Tumblr media
“Oh... you don’t say? To tell you the truth, I only have manly bath products, so I don’t know what coconut shampoo smells like,” Vivian goes on to admit. Of course, by that, she means her personal bath products included manlyᵀᴹ Moisturizing Shampoo, manlyᵀᴹ Hair and Scalp Conditioner, Invigorating Seaweed Shampoo, Minnesota Wood Body Wash, and BANDED Masculine Body Wash: Blood Orange; therefore, Vivian made the mental note of entering a Bath & Bodyworks shop as soon as she came back to Vancouver again, if only to better understand why her friend liked coconut shampoo so much. Still, at Fang’s next words, she’s quick to sweat-drop.
“Is that even a girls night out activity? Though, upon further reflection... I’m pretty sure if we ate only snacks for dinner, that would be deemed pretty ‘yeet hay’,” Vivian ponders aloud. Granted, she was no stranger to resorting to unhealthy dietary choices when home alone, to the point where there were admittedly times she only had salted seaweed for dinner, but still, she’s pretty sure they both deserved better than a ‘snack dinner’.
“Besides, if I’m not eating alone, I’d rather make you dinner myself... but as for why I asked, I guess I was just curious. What, is it suddenly a crime for me to wanna get to know my friends a little bit better?” Sure enough, Vivian then proceeds to squint at her rather judgmentally.

still thinking about grief and recovery and support on this show because oh boy did the shows airing this weekend put me in my dead parent feelings i said before i was concerned about how porjai is dealing with her own grief, and this episode we saw her easily talking about rung, and even casually yelling to rung that she misses her! maybe this is me projecting, because i can't do that, but this seems like a pretty healthy place to be, especially contrasted with mhok's relative silence, and i'm glad!
and mhok's silence doesn't come from anger or resentment (which are valid ofc, but i did wonder if imprisonment gave him time to work through this to some degree) but out of protectiveness. i fucking loved this, because it felt so realistic and lived-in. i lost a parent to intimate partner violence, and i NEVER open up about it; people sure have Opinions, and it makes me insane
but day finding out about rung offscreen wasn't on my bingo card, tbh. because we've been with mhok through everything he's found out about day
it doesn't bother me, exactly, but it feels slightly unbalanced, and i suppose what i'm thinking is: knowing what happened to someone doesn't actually tell you how they feel about it, or how it affects them, or how you can support them
mhok found out from that lady sharing personal medical info she had no business sharing about day losing his eyesight in the accident, but he put in the work to understand what it actually meant for day. and in most cases, we've seen day telling mhok about what troubles him in his own words (his crush on auggy, why he was avoiding his friends, etc)
bereavement is probably statistically more common, so i suppose it may not need to be spelled out for an audience? but i am wary, because there have been so many shows where characters are visibly — to me! — struggling with grief and everything else matryoshka-ed in it, but audience reaction simply doesn't factor this in
i'm also thinking about how often mhok tells day a story about himself with the intent of making him smile ("i bought two bracelets just because i had money to spend" "i found this rooftop when i needed to sober up" "my sister called this false rice". i'm certain there are more!). because this is what a caretaker does, or because this is what mhok does, or both?
because this always made me wonder what it would take for mhok to talk about something that wouldn't make day smile, or because he wanted to share. in the former case, it'd have to be something pretty bad!
of course, talking isn't the only way to recovery or intimacy. and mhok going from "i'm breaking up with my devoted gf because i don't want to drag her down with me" to "i'm going to ask you to be my bf" is pretty significant!
but as they navigate the journey from being caretaker and client to being boyfies, the balance has to shift around a bit to them supporting each other, consciously choosing to be there for each other
in this episode what we got was: you only want money to buy that car. and i'm not even mad about this, because this kind of comment is very in line with day's character. but wow. day, i know you're feeling big feelings, but throwing one of the few things you know about mhok's life in his face is. not it!
#last twilight the series#i know this is a “trustworthy” director. and i will happily eat my words! but#it's always bothered me when couples fall into this pattern of ONE person doing the bulk of the supporting and caring and accommodating#and i am HOPING WISHING PRAYING this show doesn't do the same you know?#also like the imbalance makes sense if they're only caretaker and client of course! i'm just SO curious how this will be addressed#thinking a lot lately about characters society puts into a certain box because social status or because they're Manly or Tough or some shit#and there isn't a space for them to be soft and goofy and playful and tender. and people assume they don't need to be cared for#ten from cooking crush and babe from pit babe and top from only friends. for example.#and “there's zero tenderness in you” mhok#and i desperately want to see these characters get to be more than they're “allowed” to be#patriarchy is a curse#oh also i suspect mhok's “healing journey” will come to a head once he buys the car or whatever ends up happening there#ALSO GOD how many people would move the fuck out of that house afterward IF THEY HAVE THE MONEY TO DO SO#and maybe it doesn't feel like this for mhok and porjai but living in the same place afterward can be intensely suffocating#but they can't just move and start over like moneyed individuals might be able to!#recovery and healing simply looks different for the rich#anyway next ep will probably foreground mhok caring for day. and there are not many eps left!! i am wary but still fairly optimistic

The Swiss, too, have a wonderful way of cooking trout. They boil them in a liquor made of wine vinegar, bay leaves, and a dash of red pepper. Not too much of any of the ingredients in the boiling water, and cook until the trout turns blue. It preserves the true trout flavor better than almost any way of cooking. The meat stays firm and pink and delicate. Then they serve them with drawn butter.
Tumblr media
They drink the clear Sion wine when they eat them. It is not a well-known dish at the hotels. You have to go back in the country to get trout cooked that way. You come up from the stream to a chalet and ask them if they know how to cook blue trout. If they don’t you walk on a way. If they do, you sit down on the porch with the goats and the children and wait. Your nose will tell you when the trout are boiling. Then after a little while you will hear a pop. That is the Sion being uncorked. Then the woman of the chalet will come to the door and say, “It is prepared, Monsieur.” Then you can go away and I will do the rest myself.

The idea of repressed non-binary asexual Aren is so funny to me because they’re probably just copying cues from other people. They are settled in their role, defined by what they’ve learned from watching others, and that’s that.
I’ve always imagined they start to question their concept of ‘manliness’ when they see Kuriko kicking ass and think “that girl right there is the manliest person I’ve ever seen.”

OK so. Headcanon time 😁
I read this chapter recently and couldn't stop thinking about it. So it's Canon that Kansuke can cook. His red bean rice cakes are 'the best' and he got the recipe from his granny. I assume this isn't the only thing she taught him, but even if it were, I don't think they'd be 'the best' if his other cooking was shit.
We also know that Yui makes 'shitty coffee'. I'm not sure what exactly that means, maybe it's more obvious in Japanese, but it's mentioned more than once. Entering hc terrain now, but she's probably not that great of a cook then either.
And lastly we know about Taka'aki that he likes pasta (I can't recall on top of my head if it's been mentioned more than once, but it's left at least enough impact on the fans that I've seen it mentioned in several artworks/doujinshi by now 😅) and that he tends to forget the world around him once he puts on his 'thinking cap' (Kansuke's words, not mine).
So in my head we have Yui who can't cook at all and Taka'aki who can cook pasta (because it's quick and easy), but who just forgets to eat when he's too immersed in something, and we have Kansuke who takes care of both of them.
K: "Have you eaten today?"
T: "Yes."
Y: "Of course!"
K: "... something besides plain pasta and shitty coffee?"
Y/T: "..."
K: "Thought so... let's go home, I'll cook a real meal for you. You need to take better care of yourselves!!"

A starter for @ubiquitarian 's Tamaki muse!
Tumblr media
"Aw, what a sweet puppy!" Eijirou giggled happily as a Shiba Inu licked his cheek. Crouching at its level, he petted and scruffed the dog's neck and realized there was no collar. "Are you lost, buddy?" Looking around the sidewalk there was no one else paying the dog any attention.
When a busy Fatgum told him and Tamaki that they'd have to go on patrol by themselves today, Eijirou certainly didn't expect to find a wandering dog without its owner.
"What do you think we should do, senpai?" Both Eijirou and the dog turned their attention toward Tamaki.

i just can't believe that oda fucking create sanji, a stereotypical ladies man who simps to an embarrassing degree for women while having his hackles comically raised around everyone he perceives as a man - and most notably butting heads with the more obvious ~manly man~ of the crew. haha, classic anime running gag, the kind that gets obnoxious at times but still makes you laugh.
AND THEN, like a billion chapters later, motherfucker steeples his fingers and goes "soooooooo... what makes a person Like That?"
and the answer is that he grew up in fucking Toxic Masculinity, The Kingdom. the answer is that he was always Different, in a way other guys instinctively perceived as weak, and that made him the target of visceral scorn and violence. the answer is that he was sensitive, sweet, caring, nurturing - feminine-coded traits which are only valued by patriarchy insofar that they're performed by women in service of men. the answer is that in a kingdom comprised almost entirely by violent men, the only ones who were ever kind to him, the only safety he ever had, were a girl and a woman.
so cooking is for women and servants, it makes you less of a man. only women will ever really value you for your passions and dreams. women are also actively hurt by the way the world works, they are unsafe unless they comply with men's violence, and you have to protect them.
(men will always know what you are, and they will hurt you if you let them.)
and even after he leaves... at baratie he is cherished and respected, but even that is an extremely masculine environment. we don't talk about our feelings, we don't let our guard down, the only love is tough love. when he tries to express his artistry and express himself through his cooking, rather than just filling orders and making money, he gets mocked.
so here is a man who will not raise a hand to a woman, because he rejects the masculinity he was raised with and refuses to become yet another man subjecting women to violence. he is desperate for women's attention and affection because it's SAFE, it's the only kind he can trust. other men are potential threats and must be treated as such. he must at all times be snarky, tough, Not Feminine, because to be perceived otherwise is to be powerless, to be hurt.
like y'all. the queer coding of it all? the overtly feminist themes? the active rejection of toxic masculinity and the way it's shown to be directly tied to imperialism? what the fuck.
