Questions for Fic Writers!

10 & 12?

Sorry it took a while to reply! 10. How do you decide what to write? Usually there's an idea lurking somewhere that finally sticks its head up and goes ME ME ME. I keep a list of "hmm" things - for fanfic, what are moments that are unclear to me (whether it's a char's motivation, or the fallout of an event, or a dialogue line, or 'what does this imply about the world') or a "haha wouldn't it be cool if", and go from there. Like right now, I have a MK Wild West AU idea that started with seeing 'arranged marriage' on a prompts list, wondering how to do it, and it really wants to be 'take Sonya and Johnny and Kano and Erron and Jax and Nightwolf and maybe Liu Kang and Kung Lao and put them in the American frontier and explore all these juicy dynamics'. And then there's Apothecary Diaries and "haha Maomao and Shisui are nerds together, they need to have a playdate".

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

Hmm. I used to really not like soulmates but got converted/turned onto it by friends and some great examples of it. The sheer amount of worldbuilding you can tuck away in "what happens if people are colorblind until/unless they meet X criteria"? What does that say about film/television, fashion, medical care (how do you see a discoloration?), even traffic and warning signs? Another one is omegaverse, because there's all the smut - and there's also all the worldbuilding because of how the dynamics would affect day-to-day life. How would first responders handle things if someone was in rut/heat? How about HR in a business for days off for heat/rut reasons? What kind of changes would you see in parental leave if something like mpreg was extant in a patriarchal society (like our current one) - or what kind of overall societal changes would you see? How would social classes form in/around the secondary alpha/beta/omega designations - would only people who didn't respond to/have heats and ruts be eligible for certain roles? Would only omegas be responsible for a certain role, or alphas? How's something different if it's an alpha-dominant setting, versus beta-dominant or omega-dominant? etc. ... so I guess some of the "lol unrealistic" tropes get me excited because of all the worldbuilding inherent in them if you treat them seriously. Like, how would life be different if you had a matching tattoo when you were born? Would there be databases of tattoos? Would parents find their childrens' soulmates immediately and be in touch? What would happen if someone didn't approve of the soulmate? What drama could you cause there? ... and then that cycles back to question 10 and my answer for it. Eventually one of those ideas goes "OH YEAH" and then I find myself writing it.

out of all of these which escaped my brain in rapid succession, i need teachers au actors au and zookeepers au the most

teachers au jinmao having janine x greg dynamics + their own terrible chemistry = blessed

or even teachers from different schools but then one of them transfers to the other's building for whatever reason

Actors au self explanatory we r not writing romance but jinshi fell in love with maomao off set and everyone is really surprised that maomao just actually acts like that irl :) but she does love to act

the emperor being a prodcer or whatever (idk actors au jobs) but the emperor in the show being like his doppleganger (they love to play pranks on the whole crew)

emp is actually brothers w jinshi irl thats why he got the role (nepotism is so alive and well) and maomao got the role bc emp saw her audition and went "this isnt anything like the script but i fucking love this energy we might have to change up the script to make this work"

jinshi in this au keeps reminding maomao theres an open room in his mansion (he says his house) if she wants to get away from her father (lakan, still obsessed w mao bc hes a big fan of her work, got the role bc he paid for it, slso is an incredible actor) and maomao is just like "??? I like living with my father" (luomen, is older than the character luomen in the show and is in fact not her father)

multiple scene breaks bc lakan breaks character when he gets scenes with maomao

nepotism is so alive but whats really funny is that maomao and her dad got casted in the same show

zookeepers au uhm idk anything abt zookeepers i just wanna see maomao cuddling with the big cats and jinshi being an aquarium/reptile/amphibian nerd also he flirts with her and some of the big cats genuine dislike him and some of the big cats are like xiaolan and shisui and suirei and so on and whatever

gaoshun and suiren and etc are actually their superiors or whatever and have to tell them both to stop slacking off

ill stop for now but my brain is on autopilot while i mentally prep for writing this damn fic so ive got aus on the brain akakakakaka

knh x warrior cats au moon fairy chapter where they make jinshi the prettiest girl at the party bc his fur can get really poofy and elegant and shiny

BUT AUHMMMM he doesnt normally look like that cause he makes himself look not as elegant by keeping his fur matte and coarse. he still looks pretty damn good bc facial structure and he bathes but like he has to roll around in the yuck patch to keep him looking like a "commoner"

side bar: imperial bloodline are big fluffy white cats w variable pelt markings, facial features, and fur lengths, but they are always very silky and soft to the touch :3 and the citizens joke that if the sun hits an imperial just right, itll blind you, so dont look at them wink wonk

After they poof him up and whatever someone (not maomao, maybe shisui) says that jinshi looks like he could be an imperial (maomao in this au has never actually seen the emperor to this point bc its convenient for me)

Maomao is just like "yeah i guess?" But she doesnt care

side bar 2: jinshi canonically looks more like his mother but even his mother looks like she comes from different clans so no one questions why jinshi sometimes looks like a distant relative of the imperial line or like some random noble that hasnt been seen in seasons (inb4 trick of the light)

But anyways they make jinshi "dance" atop a hill where the moon is shining perfectly on him and the moths and yeah whatever

And before the convoys can demand to speak with him, he runs off into the night (into a pond YUCK) and rejoins our mc group later demanding a bath (sharing tongues??? Hmmmm???? i think yes)
