However, with the death of her close friend Genoveva― her universe's Gwen Stacy and Pedro's first lover― Mercedes tries to stress to Pedro the dangers and risks his vigilantism brings to him and those around him. This causes a fight between the pair, and for a long time, they part ways entirely. They reunite years later when Mercedes meets him on a modeling job of hers, reconciling and eventually dating. However, it doesn't last long. Mercedes finds herself bitten by a radioactive spider while helping Pedro investigate a company suspected of trying to use the possible mutations for their own gain, and when she survives said mutations, it triggers the universe to try and eliminate the possibility of two " spider - men ". Pedro is the one to die, however, as he is killed in the ensuing fight with their universe's Lizard. Mourning the loss of her lover, in addition to the never - healed loss of Genoveva, Mercedes rejects the idea of taking his place as the new spider hero. However, with the absence of Spider - Man, crime begins to rise and take over the city, and a conversation with her sister Gabriela spurs Mercedes into action. She creates her own suit, and sets to the city as Araña. It's been only three months since she took on the mantle, but she has already begun to clean up crime, even if the reactions of citizens are mixed results.
