I am currently reading the Brautbriefe, the “bridal letters” or love letters and correspondence between German Pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his young fiancée Maria von Wedemeyer and … they are so very touching and sweet as they are, but knowing all that we know today, knowing how their story ended, they are even more touching and at times quite painful to read.

Bonhoeffer was a member of the Bekennende Kirche (Confessing Church), a movement within in the church in Germany at the time who opposed the attempts of the Nazis to lump all protestant churches together to one large, Nazi approved and approving church. (That is a very short summary, and I would highly recommend you do some reading if this topic interests you. The resistance and compliance within the church at the time and the differing theological views are quite interesting.) Bonhoeffer was involved in the civil resistance against the Nazi regime and arrested 1943 for a number of more or less vague charges. He was executed on April 9, 1945, at the expressed command of Hitler at a time when everybody knew that the Nazi cause was lost, at a time when every death was even more senseless than before, because there was no changing the outcome of the war.

To this day he is one of the most revered theologists of his time in Germany, valued not only for his theological writings but also for his ethics.

Today, he is maybe best known for a poem turned song that he wrote on December 19, 1944 in his prison cell as a Christmas present for his young fiancée Maria and their parents and siblings. It a deep expression of faith and hope and trust in God: Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen.

Be brave for my sake, dearest Maria, even if this letter is your only token of my love this Christmas-tide. We shall both experience a few dark hours—why should we disguise that from each other? We shall ponder the incomprehensibility of our lot and be assailed by the question of why, over and above the darkness already enshrouding humanity, we should be subjected to the bitter anguish of a separation whose purpose we fail to understand…. And then, just when everything is bearing down on us to such an extent that we can scarcely withstand it, the Christmas message comes to tell us that all our ideas are wrong, and that what we take to be evil and dark is really good and light because it comes from God. Our eyes are at fault, that is all. God is in the manger, wealth in poverty, light in darkness, succor in abandonment. No evil can befall us; whatever men may do to us, they cannot but serve the God who is secretly revealed as love and rules the world and our lives.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer war ein lutherischer Theologe, profilierter Vertreter der Bekennenden Kirche und beteiligte sich am deutschen Wiederstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus. Hierbei kam er ohne Waffen aus, da er mithilfe seiner Willenskraft, seiner Überzeugungen und seiner Worte gegen Hitler kämpfte. Er hat mutige Entscheidungen getroffen und sich für seine Mitmenschen eingesetzt. Hier könnt ihr den Verlauf seines Lebens sehen:

04.Februar 1906: Dietrich Bonhoeffer und seine Zwillingsschwester Sabine werden in Breslau geboren

1912: Umzug der Familie nach Berlin

1923-1927: Evangelisches Theologiestudium in Tübingen, Rom und Berlin

1927: Promotion in Berlin mit der Arbeit "Sanctorum communio. Eine Untersuchung zur Soziologie der Kirche".

1928: Im Januar legt er das erste theologische Examen ab.

1928: Vikariat in Barcelona

1929/30: Assistent an der Berliner Theologischen Fakultät

1930: Zweites Theologisches Examen und Habilitation, Studienaufenthalt am Union Theological Seminary in New York (USA).

1931-1933: Privatdozent an der Universität Berlin und Studentenpfarrer an der Berliner Technischen Hochschule

1933: nahm er öffentlich Stellung gegen die nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung und engagierte sich im Kirchenkampf gegen die Deutschen Christen und den Arierparagraphen im Berufsbeamtengesetz

1933-1935: Nach Adolf Hitlers Ernennung zum Reichskanzler reist Bonhoeffer nach Großbritannien und übernimmt die Betreuung der deutschen evangelischen Gemeinde in London-Sydenham

1934: Als Leiter der deutschen Jugenddelegation nimmt er an der ökumenischen Tagung auf Fanö (Dänemark) teil und warnt in seiner "Friedensrede" vor der drohenden Kriegsgefahr.

1935-1937: Vertreter der Bekennenden Kirche, bitten Bonhoeffer um seine Rückkehr nach Deutschland. Obwohl er sich des Risikos christlichen Bekennens im Nationalsozialismus bewusst ist, folgt er dem Ruf zur Leitung des Predigerseminars der Bekennenden Kirche.

1936: Im August wird ihm die Lehrerlaubnis für Hochschulen entzogen

1937: Ein Erlass von Heinrich Himmler verfügt die Schließung des Finkenwalder Predigerseminars. Allerdings setzt Bonhoeffer die Arbeit im Untergrund fort

1938: schloss er sich dem Widerstand um Wilhelm Franz Canaris an

1939: Er lehnt eine Berufung in die USA ab und kehrt kurze Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von einer Vortragsreise aus Nordamerika nach Deutschland zurück

1940: Ein weiteres Mal wird das von ihm illegal geleitete Predigerseminar geschlossen. Er erhält Rede- und Schreibverbot. Bonhoeffers Geschwister, Klaus Bonhoeffer und Christine von Dohnanyi, engagieren sich ebenfalls im Widerstand.

1943: Verlobung mit Maria von Wedemeyer am 07. Januar, Am 05. April wurde er von der Gestapo unter Beschuldigung der Wehrkraftzersetzung verhaftet

1944: Es gelingt der Gestapo, Bonhoeffer eine Wiederstandstätigkeit nachzuweisen

1945: Die SS verschleppt ihn in das Konzentrationslager Flossenbürg

Am 08. April 1945 wird er von einem SS Standgericht zum Tode verurteilt

Am 09. April 1945 wird Dietrich Bonhoeffer als einer der letzten NS-Gegner, die mit dem Attentat vom 20. Juli 1944 in Verbindung gebracht wurden hingerichtet
