This one was a little bit of a dud but at least it didn't annoy me. Dinner At Eight (1933) has a lot more serious moments for something firstly marketed as a comedy. It's much more of a drama. Some of the scenes lasted too long. I read it's based on a play and, having the story told in a different medium, the use of cuts and switching scenes back and forth should have been taken advantage of more, in my opinion. Particularly, a scene between Paula and Larry felt like a good 30 minutes of the film. It could have had better pacing. I think this is one of the only other films I've seen Billie Burke in, who is most famous for playing Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. She was going to have an aneurysm planning this dinner party, my goodness! I love the way she speaks, though. By the way, this movie is part of the George Cukor Collection currently available on The Criterion Channel, but will no longer be on there after this month. #DinnerAtEight #GeorgeCukor #CriterionChannel #CriterionCollection #Criterion #BillieBurke #DinnerAt8 #MarieDressler #JohnBarrymore #WallaceBeery #JeanHarlow #LionelBarrymore #MadgeEvans #EdmundLowe #LouiseClosserHale https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzy_KX7FlcD/?igshid=66kx7zdg8fgf

Just watched the 1930 MGM classic “Anna Christie” starring Greta Garbo, Charles Bickford, Marie Dressler & George F. Marion on TCM 😊😊 this is considered to be Garbo’s first talkie film 😊
MGM was the last of the major studios to convert to sound completely in 1929 2 years after sound was first introduced by Warner Bros. in 1927’s “The Jazz Singer” starring Al Jolson. MGM’s first full talkie was “The Broadway Melody” starring Anita Page & Charles King.
Greta Garbo was the last of it’s major stars to star in the talkies because at the time when sound came about Garbo barely spoke English & MGM were afraid that her huge success that she had as a silent film star would fade away because of that and her Swedish accent. Her last silent film (and also MGM’s) was “The Kiss”.
But finally in 1930 she starred in “Anna Christie” she practiced learning English and her English was so good in the film that she had to add an accent to sound more Swedish for the character and by the time it premiered MGM had a slogan that said “Garbo Talks” and in the end it became a hit & one of the biggest box office films of the year 😊 she would have continued success all through the 30s and into the early 40s before walking away from Hollywood in 1942.

Dinner at Eight — I wonder what Carlotta would have made of Google Glass?
Dinner at Eight — I wonder what Carlotta would have made of Google Glass?
Kitty: I was reading a book the other day.
Carlotta: Reading a book?
Kitty: Yes. It’s all about civilization or something. A nutty kind of a book. Do you know that the guy says that machinery is going to take the place of every profession?
Carlotta: Oh, my dear, that’s something you need never worry about.
