Loving my little Pocket Journal so much these days. _____________________ I think mostly it’s because it is beginning to fill up all of these fun little facial experiments. _____________________ Faces are hard for me. They scare me most days in fact...but I keep at it because I know that even though it still feels difficult, I’m making progress. Nothing big, nothing even notable really to the rest of the world, but to me that dread of starting is no longer there. More Faces and Art Marks cards tonight. And three gel ink pens- red, blue and black. _____________________ Yesterday I talked a bit about working on the things that are difficult for us. Today I am doing just that. _____________________ But I almost didn’t. I had a dozen excuses ready- I told myself I couldn’t because all I had with me was my Pocket Journal and three ink pens. _____________________ I flipped through my journal and found this page of vintage graph paper that I had typed a few words on before stitching it into the book. Upside down that is. Those two words reminded me that I could just love the process, that I didn’t have to love the end result. And no one else had to love it at all. Just me. I spy tiny fingers on my art journal. _____________________ She loves these books and seems to find her way back to them over and over again. I love that she loves leafing through them. But I love her curious and honest eye even more. _____________________ She asked me about the mismatched eyes on this one. She wanted to know what made them that way. She wanted to know why I would draw them that way. I told her it was an experiment. She didn’t question that. Her four year old mind accepted it for what it was. As she walked away she said. “I like that face Gram. I made lots of Art Marks with my little Repetition Stencil. _____________________ Seriously though- this little Stencil has so much paint on it that the openings are getting smaller and smaller! Experimenting with Faces and Art Mark Collection Cards today in the studio. _____________________ The hardest part of today’s experiment was working wet on wet. I challenge myself to keep going and see what I can do without the aid of a heat tool or drying time. _____________________ I was working on a scrap of loose leaf paper so it was fairly fragile. Putting a few layers of paint down thinly helped and it dried rather quickly. Stencils and Art Marks compliment these less than perfect faces. So I tell myself. I can’t remember a time when light and color didn’t inspire me. Even before I knew I was an artist those two elements lifted my spirits. _____________________ When I walk into the studio and it is flooded with light, and I see my beautiful messes from the day before it really puts a smile on my face. _____________________ I am a firm believer that if you surround yourself with things or ideas or elements of nature that make you happy you will feel inspired. _____________________ And yes! there are days that even light and color don’t have the power to get my creative juices flowing. Faces + Color + Art Marks = Love. My favorite thing right now is this combination. _____________________ Having my little Art Marks Collection Cards makes the process quick and easy. Just add washi tape and you have a pretty, colorful, art mark filled flip out page _____________________ I am making time to practice every day this way. Do I share them all? Nope. That would be scary because some of them ARE scary. But I keep experimenting and slowly I am finding faces that are representative of my style. _____________________ I completely let go of the rules of faces and instead am creating line work and proportions and color combinations that are fun and experimental at best. But they are me. Practicing faces in my Pocket Journal. _____________________ I can see many things that I do not love about this piece, but I can see one or two things that I do love too so that makes me smile.
