Welcome to American Girl Polls! I plan to run many different polls for American Girl related things, with either a characters tournament or an outfits tournament being first. Feel free to leave an ask if there’s a specific type of tournament you want to see. My sideblog where I post about my own dolls is @maryellenlarkin

Dear original American girl collectors, the company we loved is just not the same any more.....
I went to the American girl doll store in Dallas and was told it was impossible for me to get a Melody doll without “Perma-panties” or a doll with sowed on underwear. You see I was under the impression that these dolls were discontinued but it turns out that because AG has so much back stock of these perma panty dolls, they only want to sell these dolls from now on till they get rid of all of them.
I just got off the phone with American Girl and they had to special order my doll without perma panties, but they are still unsure that I might have been sent a perma panty doll. I just think that is not right because I’ve had stellar customer service before and this is such a let down that they can’t guarantee a doll without sown on underwear. It’s just not the company I remember who use to do anything to please the customer and make my requests for a doll happen.
Anyways my doll with supposed no perma panties is on the way....we’ll see if AG delivered the right doll. If not they might have lost a long time customer and devout collector:(

As we collectively nest for the upcoming release of a Harlem Renaissance doll in the American Girl canon, I've been realizing how little I know about this era. I'm trying to catch up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm about halfway through The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson, which is informative and so beautifully written. She interviewed 300+ people; she intersperses talk about major trends that apply to large groups of people with the stories of three specific people she chose to give us details about how this time period looked in a lived-out way. She also throws in snippets from other interviews without following those individuals' stories all the way through. Wilkerson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for another book she wrote, Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents.
Tumblr media
Although the Harlem Renaissance can't be understood without the Great Migration, the Great Migration is also bigger than that. Academically, the Great Migration is talked about as 1915-1970; Wilkerson says: "...some six million black southerners left the land of their forefathers and fanned out across the country for an uncertain existence in nearly every other corner of America. The Great Migration would become a turning point in history. It would transform urban America and recast the social and political order of every city it touched. It....helped push the country toward the civil rights revolutions of the 1960s."
The beach scene I showed of fictional Maryellen the other day in FL in 1954 would have been racially segregated; real children in that time period would not have had the quotidian experience we all have now of going into public places full of racially and otherwise diverse people enjoying the water, food, movie, etc. on equal footing.
Tumblr media
The Warmth of Other Suns talks about one of the interviewees, Robert's, experience of driving westward to California to leave the Jim Crow South in 1953. All through Texas, the hotels that lined the highway did not have rooms for "colored" people. He became more and more exhausted as he drove across in New Mexico, but even at a hotel in western New Mexico where he had stopped to tidy his appearance and said he was a military veteran and a doctor when asking for a room, he could not get one.
Another interviewed family passing through Texas in the mid-50s were biracial. They could all pass for white except for one ten-year-old child in the family. They were exhausted and had been told, like Robert, that there were no hotel rooms for colored customers. So the white-passing adults rented the room and then carried their dark-colored child to the room in a blanket. They were able to safely sleep somewhere that night, but Wilkerson reports that family members said the child who had to hide "was not ever quite the same after that."
I want to acknowledge that the light-hearted stories of the 1950s told about fictional Maryellen weren't the only kind of experiences real people were having at that time. And more generally, the former Confederate states have been a hell in many ways for non-Anglo people in the hundred-plus years after the Civil War, which is why there was such a huge movement of individual families looking for something better.
