“Soon the knitter herself will visualize a thousand of other ways in which a motif can be used, and so fave at her disposal an exhaustible variety of fabrics. Thick fabrics or thin fabrics, patterned fabrics or plain fabrics, those blazing in colour or decorated with beads, she can make fabric imitated fur (Looped Knitting), Lace, Picot, Filet, or Crochet, and even cloque and woven fabric, by a mere change of technique. Every ornament known to dressmaking can be imitated, even hemstitching and buttons!”
When Mary Thomas wrote this in 1945 in Mary Thomas’s Book of Knitting Patterns when dressmaking was the most common craft women learned. Circular knitting, which she called seamless knitting, was viewed as peasant knitting, interesting historically, but not something most women likely to do. So, comparing knitting to dressmaking was a compliment. In fact, sewing pieces of knitted fabric was taken for granted and Thomas offered the same garment block or garment schematic that we see in dressmaking in the section explaining how to plan an entirely original sweater.
Similarly, Thomas urged her the reader to imagine new ways of patterning a knitted fabric through her choice of stitches. Every section of the book suggests how variations might be introduced to the stitches she explains. She valued the experimentation and imagination which created the stitches she taught and clearly saw yet more to be invented.

Today is read a book day and although I am a fan of crime fiction I would recommend this book to anyone who knits! It was first printed in 1938 and this is a 1987 version of the knitting book by Mary Thomas. As you can see I paid 50p in a charity shop and it was the best 50p I have spent! It covers everything and I mean everything to do with knitting from the history of how it began to working out your own patterns. The perfect book to browse and dip in and out of! #knittingbooks #book #craftbooks #vintagebooks #366days #bookreadingday #knittingknowledge #knittingknowhow #marythomas https://www.instagram.com/p/CEzDiXglLbO/?igshid=1ravogund6l1l

Reposted from @kishlb - #MaryThomas, known as #QueenMary, (ca. 1848–1905) was one of the leaders of the 1878 "#Fireburnlaborriot, or uprising, on the island of #StCroix in the #DanishWestIndies. Mary Thomas was from #Antigua and arrived in St. Croix in the 1860s to take work on the plantations in the island. In 1878 she resided at the Sprat Hall plantation Before the outbreak of the uprising she had three children, and had previously been arrested for misdemeanors.Historians have speculated that the arrest record was partly invented by colonial Danish authorities in order to discredit Thomas in the eyes of the public. After the 1848 emancipation of enslaved Africans in the Danish West Indies, an 1849 labor law fixed salaries and labor conditions for all plantation workers and prohibited bargaining for better wages or work conditions. This made plantation work unattractive and many workers opted to leave the plantations and the islands, to seek better conditions elsewhere. The government reacted to the labor shortage by making it harder to for workers to leave the islands, demanding health certificates and charging fees for passports. When wages were to be negotiated in the fall of 1878, the workers' demands were denied, and new harsh conditions for traveling were imposed. This sparked the so-called Fireburn riots, which have been called the largest labor riot in Danish history, and during which more than 50 plantations were burned. Because of her role as a leader during the uprising Mary Thomas came to be known as "#QueenMary". The workers chose her and two other women, "#QueenAgnes" and "#QueenMatilda", as "queens" to perform ritual and celebratory functions during the uprising.Thomas played a leading role and referred to herself as a "captain" in the rebellion.Allegedly, during one the uprisings Thomas had called for those unwilling to participate to be decapitated. She was arrested and tried with other leaders of the labor uprising. During the trial of the labor leaders she gave witness testimony against another leader, #ThomasGraydon also known as "#ColonelPeter", who was sentenced to death. - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BrxhTXjnb8T/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jfkuehi3r1s7
