“Soon the knitter herself will visualize a thousand of other ways in which a motif can be used, and so fave at her disposal an exhaustible variety of fabrics. Thick fabrics or thin fabrics, patterned fabrics or plain fabrics, those blazing in colour or decorated with beads, she can make fabric imitated fur (Looped Knitting), Lace, Picot, Filet, or Crochet, and even cloque and woven fabric, by a mere change of technique. Every ornament known to dressmaking can be imitated, even hemstitching and buttons!”

When Mary Thomas wrote this in 1945 in Mary Thomas’s Book of Knitting Patterns when dressmaking was the most common craft women learned. Circular knitting, which she called seamless knitting, was viewed as peasant knitting, interesting historically, but not something most women likely to do. So, comparing knitting to dressmaking was a compliment. In fact, sewing pieces of knitted fabric was taken for granted and Thomas offered the same garment block or garment schematic that we see in dressmaking in the section explaining how to plan an entirely original sweater.

Similarly, Thomas urged her the reader to imagine new ways of patterning a knitted fabric through her choice of stitches. Every section of the book suggests how variations might be introduced to the stitches she explains. She valued the experimentation and imagination which created the stitches she taught and clearly saw yet more to be invented.

Today is read a book day and although I am a fan of crime fiction I would recommend this book to anyone who knits! It was first printed in 1938 and this is a 1987 version of the knitting book by Mary Thomas. As you can see I paid 50p in a charity shop and it was the best 50p I have spent! It covers everything and I mean everything to do with knitting from the history of how it began to working out your own patterns. Lovely Lace Knits by Gabrielle Vezina

It will soon be fall, so new knitting patterns and yarns are showing up and so are some books. I decided to offer this one on lace knitting because, on the one hand it is knitting, but on the other it is lace knitting, that is, knitting with tiny holes to make patterns. So, you don't really want little holes in serious winter wear, but you can enjoy them in the fall.

The book explains the basics of lace knitting but presumes some skill. Almost all the patterns are marked intermediate and only 1 hat and matching mittens are advanced beginner. It offers 16 patterns: 2 sweaters, 2 tops, 4 scarves/shawls, 3 pairs of socks, and 2 hats, 1 scrunchie and 1 pair of mittens. The photography is beautiful as you can see, and the book offers exceptionally large and clear charts for the lace patterning.

You see here in green on the cover Pine Cone Sweater, then in Samara Cardigan in a greyed rose holding 2 yarns together, one of them mohair blend, Winter Wheat Scarf, and the Amarelle Sweater in blue with plenty of bobbles. The Solstice Top in yellow is a nice transitional piece in wool, and the Soft Breeze Shawl in mottled pinks and greens.

I'm currently reading a book about yarn stashes it's called ” A Stash Of One's Own”. It's a collection of stories by 22 knitters who share their experiences on the subject of yarn stashes. I haven’t read much but what I have read is very interesting. I plan on writing more about it on my Blog as I read more.
