Making some progress on this, it is a pattern from The Jameh Mosque of Yazd - taught by Adam Williams in his zoom class last week, (the course is still available as a recording on the website www.artofislamicpattern.com) Adam Williams @adamwilliamsonart and Richard Henry @richardhenryart are offering a series of extraordinary online zoom classes though their school @artofislamicpattern on creative geometry and pattern design . . #geometryathome #artonline #onlineteaching #geometricart #sacredgeometry #geometricpattern #geometricdesign #interiordesign #architecturalpatterns #tiling #mathematicalpattern #rulerandcompass #artcourse #Islamicgeometricpatterns #islamicgeometry #islamicdesign #islamicart #geometry #zoomclass #pattern #geometricpattern #geometry #drawing #pattern #arabesque #biomorphic #mandalaart #mandala_universe #mandaladesign (at Art of Islamic Pattern) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAJCR46JA2V/?igshid=ubnwa7401py6

“My mother was always covered with clay, and she would give me a bag and I would sit next to her and do things with clay. Then she would be cutting wood or having a stone cutter helping her with stone, or going to see workers who would work with aluminum. I remember her, one day, coming home with a piece of a fridge that she made into a table. She was always surrounded by materials. She had all that machinery, too.” — Hala Schoukair, 2013, The New York Times Photos: Saloua Raouda Choucair, © Saloua Raouda Choucair Foundation . #Herchive #illustration #SalouaRaoudaChoucair #Lebanon #Lebaneseartist #abstractart #arabartist #sculpture #painting #poetry #islamicart #shapes #mathematicalpatterns #pioneer #Sufi #Beirut #archive #arthistory #art #womenartists #femaleartist #womenmakinghistory #womenofart https://www.instagram.com/p/B2W8gyhoZgQ/?igshid=1pgs5tfhdn7cz

Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916-2017) was a painter, sculptor and architecture passionate. She’s considered the first abstract artist in Lebanon and a pioneer of abstract art in the Arab World. She spent her life working tirelessly on her art. Unfortunately, being a Druze Beirut born woman made it harder to receive the recognition she deserved throughout her career. Choucair started out as a painter exploring a figurative style but a trip to Cairo and the time she spent in Paris fed her interest in abstraction. Inspired by the principles of Islamic Art, she dismissed the representation of icons and symbolic references in her art while exploring mathematical patterns. She started exploring sculpture in the ‘60s through a wide range of materials such as clay, stone, wood, aluminium and plexiglass. Her module sculptures – or in Choucair’s term ‘sculptural poems’ – are inspired by Arab poetry and can be either separated or assembled together just like the verses of a Sufi poem, which can stand alone or be put together to build other poems. Although today Choucair is mostly known by her paintings and sculptures, she also experimented with tapestry design, jewellery, book illustrations and public art. Interested in Sufi writing, mathematics, physics, science and architecture Choucair’s work has an “universal influence“. She rejected the idea that her work was mainly influenced by European modernism – “What I experience everyone in the world experiences.” Hala Schoukair, her daughter, said on a Tate Modern interview that no matter how her mother’s career progressed over the years she never gave up, she “was always motivated. She wasn’t sick of modern times. She wasn’t nostalgic. She believed in the future.” Illustration by @inescosta.me Photos: Saloua Raouda Choucair, © Saloua Raouda Choucair Foundation . . #Herchive #illustration #SalouaRaoudaChoucair #Lebanon #Lebaneseartist #abstractart #arabartist #sculpture #modernism #painting #poetry #islamicart #mathematicalpatterns #pioneer #Sufi #Beirut #archive #arthistory #art #womenartist #femaleartist #womenmakinghistory #womenofart (at Beirut Lebanon - لبنان.بيروت) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2PCXmNIGCK/?igshid=2ztk125qx2fz
