it’s been too long since I drew things from real pictures so here’s Ryunosuke Matsumura as Toki in Joker Trap, hi he’s beautiful and I love him
edited to add Shuji Kikuchi as Camus from the same stage as voted by the masses for the next portrait, so I guess I’m drawing them all now
edited again! the set is complete now and while Allen gave me quite the challenge, I’m happy with the finished product. These are all from a set of bromides that was included, against all reason and logic, with the basic edition of Joker Trap that I first bought. Thank you, mysterious stranger who put those in there when you resold your copy.

TRAMA
First piece completed in 2024 - Ryunosuke Matsumura as Tokiya Ichinose in the Gekidan Shining stage play Polaris. This one was a real struggle, and I'm still not sure I'm 100% happy with it, but my eye needs to rest, so it's done. CSP + artemus brush my beloved (edited to add the completed version, with a slightly fancier background, ready for prints)
This feels auspicious because ryu means dragon, and 2024 is the year of the dragon. On top of that, Tokiya is my favorite in UtaPri; Nosuke plays him so well that to me he's become my IRL Tokiya. So it's a happy confluence.
I'm planning on adding some effects to the background (tech or starry or something, since Polaris is set in the future and the characters pilot mechs), and then I'll be starting on Cecil and Natsuki, the other main characters in the play. And then there shall be prints!

Well, that was very... Japanese. And as much as I looked forward to this movie - I own the manga in its entirety and I watched and loved the anime - I simply didn't like it. Why?
For one, the music was very jarring. Terribly loud, electronic, very... 2001: A Space Odyssey like with the whole droning thing etc. After a while, it made my eye twitch. I really hated it.
Also, I felt like I was actually watching a theater performance. It was mostly filmed in a studio, among very obvious set pieces - the shop didn't even look like a real place - and the performances themselves were so overwrought, especially by the villains. It felt very "even the viewers in the last row need to see I'm batcrap insane, watch me cackle." Yeah.
The only saving grace? Watanuki and Doumeki. This kind of a relationship was what I wanted from the manga and the anime and the movie actually delivered. So brownie points for that.
But... yeah. This? Not my cuppa. Maybe someone who is really into artsy stuff will love it but not me.
Makoto Shinkai has definitely found his stride. He just excels at making these visually stunning movies that pack quite an emotional punch. It's true that his stories are rather predictable by now, but this one has enough refreshing elements to make it fully engaging, like the road-movie vibes that permeate the plot. Also, I really liked that the film went straight to the point right away, cause it hooks you from the beginning. And of course, the visuals are nothing short of awe-inspiring, but I expected no less of this director. If there's one thing I didn't like, that would be the age gap between the leads. The story would have worked just as well (or even better) if the characters had been the same age. But still, Suzume more than met my expectations, and I'll be looking forward to Shinkai's future works.
