Page14 Greg Rucka writer, pencil art by myself but layouts by Paulo Siqueira I had zero energy yesterday and wasn’t able to finish this Process post. After days of not being able to sleep yesterday, i felt like LOOKER. yep LOOKER. Everytime i would close my eyes... poof.. 3 hrs gone...poof another 2 hrs...over and over...yet still exhausted. Movie reference encase you were wondering. Backstory.... cont.... Finished the three remaining pages over the course of the weekend so that first thing the Editors and rest of the creative team had in the inboxes. Pages uploaded to Dropbox. Emails of apprecation for the work under the gun. Thanks as always to Sean Parsons for inks under the harshest of dealines. Jeremy Colwell for batting clean-up and doing a great job trying to give me what id asked for even when getting push back from higher ups. This was 2 and a half days of work. I finished up around 630 am on a Wednesday. Im completely out of gas at this point. No sooner did i send it off and was grabbing a bagel from next door i got a email response. Seriously...4 minutes ( not kidding) later from Greg and im paraphrasing’ This is fucking outstanding man, great job! ’ We had talked about how to approach the shard images. To either use the actual artist work or have me redraw them. I was asked to draw them. So on separate sheets of paper i drew roughs of each individual image then flopped it because we are seeing the mirror images. I like capturing the flavor of the artist when referencing specific scenes, some harder than others but i like tipping the hat, so to speak. That was one day alone. We were meeting that afternoon for coffee, i still had 3 pages to go and they were due friday. Im completely fried and i put in a call to DC and left a message letting them know i dont think I’ll make the friday deadline and understanding if they need to pull another artist in for a page or 2. A few hours later at coffee i got a call back from the editor giving me the weekend to finish the remaining pages, as everyone in the offices were floored. But literally Monday morning first thing. Going to try and finish this process thread by friday. Q life plus Bad Feds equals frustrating times. Medical stuff throws a spanner in the works. Plus damn floaters were crazy the last few days. Seemed like fruit flies were everywhere i found myself brooming the page thinking it was eraser leavings. Page 11. The second i drew before jumping to the splash page in the front of tge story. Had to really fix this page the lasso switches forearms to many times. We were all tired at this point. Everyone was a bit on edge, tired and stretched thin. We were going over colors for this page trying to figure out the right red for her lips and fingernails. Emails flying. If any of us hadnt been stretched thin and took just a minute to realize Laura already picked it. Trying to keep posting regularly on process but Q life and Portland happenings definitely aren’t helping. But two days in a row is a win. I believe this was the first page i drew for the issue. Again i draw out of order and most of my time working on the book is hazy. I wanted a good page in the middle? Why, encase i totally biffed it. Hopefully by the time i got to drawing the the splash and back pages, i already knew those we going to wait until i’m more comfortable with the character. Ive said this before at conventions and panels. Wonder Woman/Diana is really difficult for me to draw. More so than most any other character I’ve drawn professionally. I don’t think im a particular good WW artist. I struggle with her all the time be it pages, cover ( ive only done one WW cover) sketches and watercolors, if you ever want to see terror watch me at a panel when im asked to sketch her on stage. It is, shall we say, entertaining. I keep trying in the hope that the magic button will finally be pressed and ill have figured her out. Don’t misunderstand me, i am really happy with how the issue turned out and being asked to participate. It was a lot of pressure from the top of the creators box to the bottom. So worth it?! I’ll say yes as the issue did extremely well kicking off Greg, Liam and Nicola’s fantastic run. Second. I hate, hate, hate....loathe.... nope hate circular panels. I tried a few time early in my career. Nope. Eff that. Not going too. Don’t care at all. I cant even. Hate them. So i changed it without asking. Over the half way point now, we are coordinating now inks, and on the sly colors, keeping the assembly line moving. Skkkkkkreeettttccchhhh!!! Patch panel request. This page i had notes to change a few panel layouts. I double check which regalia Diana should wear, since we are incorporating various looks. I get to draw a Harry Peter type version. I had to go back and patch in the new armor to be used in Rebirth. I didnt want to loose the original drawing so the original has on the back on some fabrino paper is the patch drawing. A twofer. Attaching both versions .....so tired at this point that I completely missed a birthday party for a friend where i was to meet someone. A bit longer break than anticipated. Fridays eye treatment news and procedure went well but due to my eye being a black marble of dilation looking like a betazoid eye shield and Ray Ban sunglasses wasn’t enough to block out the suns rays on my walk home. Even ducking in the shadows. This created the rough sandpaper effect of discomfort that no amount of liquid tears could help. After a fashion they would sting putting them in. Mondays complication resolved itself and as i said before double check those prescriptions. Lots of info. A layout requested change. A chance to draw Classic Ares. Win. A straight forward page. We’re half way done, the deadline is closer and closer. My sleeping pattern is eratic. It’s literally shifting every day but no matter what always 8 hours. At times i was going to bed around 6 am to noon. Depending on the complexity of the page. I cannot/wont do this for every project, I can’t, its not worth it. Page6 Greg Rucka writer, pencil art by myself but layouts by Paulo Siqueira Backstory.... cont.... ....a post or two back I mentioned letting things go.... its still hard to do even on deadline and having been doing this for a while. One panel i was requested to change from the layout. Im drawing at a good clip at this point but on this page im about 3/4 done when that thing in the back of your head. I made the requested fix and im still scratching my head when i noticed it. Crap. Its either redraw the page or erase the problem panels. I wanted the originals whole, free of stats and patches. I broke out the electric eraser. Reworked the layout to work and began to redraw... Rachael Maddow ( blatant easter-egg) as the field reporter, but the name of the establishment "Sexy Place" in all honestly i wasn't being glib, strip joints, and Portland has a few, some of which very innocuous names or playful ones. I was trying to play that part up. We went nameless instead, i was asked and presented my POV but in the end it was removed. at this point my days consist of waking up, start work, finish work go to bed. my sleep schedule was ever revolving sometime waking of at 4 am to start after 8 hrs of sleep Always 8 hours. Long holiday weekend filled with... quarantine fun (alone and tv) Sometimes no matter what you just cant make it work. It happens. A huge hurdle to get over from fan to pro is that you have to move on and let things go, you did your best. I like the work but I couldn’t make the lasso/whip work, it functioned but not quiet as intended. Because of our extremely tight deadline, yes its a reoccurring theme, id set up a dropbox for Sean, Jeremy and myself. To keep the flow if pages steady in production.... this is not the normal procedure. I wanted my creative team as much time as possible, so both would be right behind me. Giving them, hopefully, plenty of time for corrects and edits. They will and did happen. Its just the way it is. Especially under such tight deadlines. I was asked to come up with a better/different layout for panel 1. I think this was one, if not the last page of i drew for the story. Nothing was coming to mind right away way so i held off. I don’t know of it works any better looking at it now, then i was in ‘ i got to get the page finished’ mode, much like beast mode only with less sleep. It usually takes a couple of days to get up to speed on a given project, for me at least. We didn’t have that luxury being behind the eightball. Really behind. Again its a big event with a lot of pressure for all involved. My first time working off of someone elses layouts. I wish my hand had been a bit freer but it in the end worked out ok. I came in way late into the process. Really late. Really really late. It started on a rainy morning with a phone call from Greg Rucka asking about my schedule. Everything was about to drop on Wonder Woman reboot and DC Rebirth and there was a huge problem. I got the deets. Once we finished up i then got a call firming up deadlines and vitals with the editors. I had a prior commitment, a 4 day convention that was happening in a couple of days. Quarantine PROCESS part 24 Astrocity page 24 Home brew hooch the 07 a very good year. I never showed the still in sprawling Manta Manor we never got to a good place to brew... my bad. But i took Kurts note and made sure the 07 appears another time. His wind down apéritif (?) My added panel (4) doesnt work. I goofed. I do love the tranquility of our hero here. At peace enjoying the quietness of his life Kurt Busiek is the series writer and creator. Pencil art by me. Presented here is the script, my thumbnail and notes and final pencils The inks on this issue were Sean Parsons and Pete Pantazis colored the issue. With Comicraft doing the lettering. KURT’s note and its an all encompassing note for the previous pages too. ‘TWENTY-FOUR Panel 2 - if you rotated this panel, so he’s looking to the right — maybe even a profile of 3/4 rear shot — then for the whole page, he’s be gazing in the same direction, as the sun goes down. Just a suggestion; don’t bother if you don’t like it. Panel 3 - maybe a little more headroom in this panel for the captions? The “You Are Now Leaving Astro City” blurb looks like a street sign, and will take up a big chunk of the bottom of the panel. It looks like you’ve got him holding a bottle? I was assuming he was brewing his own hooch. But if you like the bottle as a prop, we should try to establish it as salvage — see a broken crate full of gin bottles in an earlier scene, make sure the label is worn away, only scraps left, that sort of thing. Overall, it looks great — nice motion, nice dynamic layouts, and a ton of attitude comes through on our guy here, even though he never actually speaks. Hope this isn’t too overbearing.
