As we get closer and closer to discharge Dad and I have more running around to do to have everything organized for coming home. This means coming in later which always leaves me with #momguilt for not being there for when he is happy and awake ready for his morning play time. This morning I walked in to one of our most special nurses doing his full morning routine of tummy time, stories/songs and tonnes of cuddles. Well yesterday was fun, cue the eye rolling. The only thing that goes through Maverick's gtube is medications when needed and up until recently a daily multi vitamin. With his new found ability to eat gummies and fruit snacks he has recently transitioned to daily his daily gummy vitamin. Yesterday afternoon I gave Maverick his daily gummy vitamin and put the bottle back in the cupboard. Not long after I left the kiddos unattended for mere minutes for a quick bathroom break. When I came out the funny vitamins were spilt all over the floor and Maverick had both fists filled. So there I was unsure of how many he had eaten or if I had found this little turkey in time. So a quick call to 811 and a transfer to poison control to thankfully tell me he would have had to eat 300 for it to be a problem, it's a bottle of 250. Moral of the story where there is a Maverick there is a way. I just keep reminding myself I prayed for an active, wild child 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ This is a picture of him trying to get more of his gummies. So I sitting her thinking about another NICU mom with in her case two severely special needs mom, both her twin sons survived, and I am so mad on her behalf. This mom is extremely forth coming about just how hard the bad days are and what a struggle it is. She recently made a post and the comments and DM's were filled with concern about how she sounds depressed and should look into antidepressants. So one I think it's amazing to have an online community that reaches out and cares so much because for a lot of people the words of frustration, exhaustion and disappoint are depression...but the the thing is for a lot of special needs mom the vent about their date, their week l, their month isn't depression, it's grief. It's grieving the loss of the life you dreamed while trying to thrive in the overwhelming burden of severe special needs. It's the grief of being expected to just be grateful for living children while not being able to openly express the sense of loss of any form of normalcy without something calling it depression. This is not depression it's grief, a pill doesnt fix grief. Grief takes time BUT here is the thing...when you have a severely special needs child or in her case 2 there is always a new loss to grieve and the few milestones that happen slowly and so far behind are awe inspiring but it also triggers grief that you are so insanely happy over something that for most parents they celebrate and then quickly forget. I'm "lucky" my surviving son who was once deemed severely special needs has defied his expectation. He had learned to breathe without support, walk and eat in the last year. All of this was deemed unlikely when he was discharged from the NICU. “How good do I look with NOTHING on my face?!” Slight change of plans. For now the nasal prongs have been discontinued. When Maverick is on his BIPAP he is on room air and doesn’t require any addition oxygen support. With that knowledge in mind the question that came up today was “Are we under estimating Maverick’s capability?” So the new plan is to let Maverick be COMPLETELY free of respiratory support during awake period and trialling the nasal mask during his sleep time. 5 months ago Maverick began his tube weaning journey. When I pictured this process I thought this would be life changing & so much easier than tube feeds. I was wrong, at least at 1st. The first 2 months were filled with tears, tantrums, meltdowns & frustration. For the the first time in Maverick's life he was feeling hunger & he didn't know what it meant & how to fix it and for us it was a HUGE battle trying to help him understand. Sept 4th was Maverick's last tube feed with only hydration and medications going through his tube. Unlike I expected the process was still incredibly hard & frustrating & leaving most of us in tears on daily bases. Maverick now understood what hunger was & how to fix it but his oral motor skills & strength was similar to that of a 6 month old. What he could eat was very specific and he needed supervision to make sure he was safely eating. About a month ago I sat with happy tears watching Maverick eat eggs, yogurt & a banana for breakfast. We had finally achieved an oral ability & safety that we didnt have to plan our whole day around his eating schedule. If we were out on the go I could hand him a snack & know he was able to eat it safely. I never could have pictured that in 5 months Maverick would have the ability to take his oral calories & all his hydration. You've come so far Maverick and Daddy & I couldn't be more proud to be your parents, you are our superhero & biggest inspiration.
