“How good do I look with NOTHING on my face?!” Slight change of plans. For now the nasal prongs have been discontinued. When Maverick is on his BIPAP he is on room air and doesn’t require any addition oxygen support. With that knowledge in mind the question that came up today was “Are we under estimating Maverick’s capability?” So the new plan is to let Maverick be COMPLETELY free of respiratory support during awake period and trialling the nasal mask during his sleep time. Please keep Maverick in your thoughts and prayers as he is on his fifth hospitalization since December and this is the worst yet. It's so sad how quickly Maverick's health can decline. When we brought Maverick to the hospital last night he was satting well at 95-96% on room air 3 hours later his sats dropped to 88% room air, not ideal but manageable. Through out the night his oxygen needs increased as did his desats. He has been transfer to Victoria PICU and they were trying to get his oxygen levels where they need to be on high flow but it's looking like he will he need to be switched to a full face BIPAP mask. He has two new pneumonias in his lungs...this poor kid cannot catch a break. I have had a lot of anxiety this time around having followed @londonsmamaforever journey and the devastating loss of their daughter London I am reminded that Maverick is still at risk for severe illness, complications or even death from his premature birth. To some that may sound dramatic but it is a very scary risk and reality. Just a little light reading in the hospital. Our poor guy was readmitted to hospital for another bought of pneumonia. This is his fourth admittance since Christmas due to reoccurring pneumonia, partial collapsed lungs and RSV. On the outside Maverick is a happy, playful, smart, silly, outgoing and in the big picture thriving toddler, it is sometimes easy to forget that although on the outside he looks like your typical toddler on the inside is a very compromised immune system and lungs with catastrophic damage. Maverick is such a good example of why it is so important to respect parents wishes and boundaries on what they are comfortable exposing their child to. A lot of NICU families are labelled dramatic for the constant handwashing and the tight rules regarding not wanting their child around even the smallest of sniffles but the truth is the fight to keep a preemie/micropreemie healthy often feels like an uphill battle that leaves you taking two steps back more than you move forward. Just last week Maverick's pediatrician said his lungs sounded the best they have since September, and here we are a week later back in hospital, it can change that quickly. In the big picture we've been very lucky. Your average micropreemie will be hospitalized three times within their first year a home. Maverick made it over 11 months without a hospitalization, unfortunately he developed viral and bacterial pneumonia at Christmas and he has been playing catch up ever since. Maverick is doing well, he is comfortable and stable and slowly improving again.
