Most of their dialogue through S1 and some of S2 (before they actually get together) is flirting disguised as just talking.

While it's obvious to everyone that Dipper has a crush on Wendy, it's obvious-er Mathew and Wendy are crushing on each other.

If Wendy wants something, Mathew buys it with money he steals from Preston and Priscrlla.

"Mathew Northwest!" Preston shouted when he saw his ex-son at the fair with Wendy Corduroy. Mathew heard him immediately, but ignored the man, causing him to shout again. "Mathew Northwest, where have you been this past month? You've worried you're mother sick!"

Turning around and spotting the woman laughing with Pacifica near the cotton candy stand, Mathew grimaced. "Doesn't look that way."

"Mathew, we're going home at once!"

"No, he's not. You're a jerk." Wendy may have been 8, but she was *not* letting her friend's mean father be, well, mean.

"Mathew, seriously. You shouldn't be hanging out around... people like her."

"People like what?"

"You know what I mean, we've spoken of this before."

"Well, I wasn't listening. Tell me again."

Preston looked between the children, growing incensed. "I hope you're happy without your family, because you can't come back."

"Wasn't planning on it." As soon as the old man had left, Wendy gave Mathew a giant hug. "Let's go get some cotton candy."

Mathew screamed at Wendy's words as he suddenly layed up on the bed and saw where he was laying. "Oh my god, I am so sorry!"

"It's fine. I should probably put that away anyways," Wendy replied as she did so, before asking, "Wanna play some Smash Bros?"

"Oh, you're going down," Mathew replied as they both got controllers, ready to play.
