Reading Room: Demetrius Lacroix

This week I am delighted to be joined by my dear friend and godbrother-twice-over Demetrius Lacroix, to talk about good divination practices, client care, and combining community-minded charity and spirituality. Demetrius is a Tarot Reader, an Oungan Asogwe in Haitain Vodou and the co-owner of Botanica Macumba, an up-and-coming spiritual supplies store and community space down in the New Orleans.

Al: Laroye! Thanks for having this conversation with me. You are a great reader in many different styles and systems of divination. How do you help a client decide which kind of divination is best for them? When do you recommend, say, tarot over palmistry?

Demetrius: I try to guide all my clients to the information that will help them the most: Tarot and Palmistry are two of the prime examples that people have come to expect and ask for. Many of them are not aware of the ways these two divination systems work. Tarot for me is highly detailed, and lays out a very wide story and can tell the story with depth. Palmistry lays out many details as well, but they pertain more directly to the client themselves, their likes and dislikes, and the general things they can expect throughout their lifetime. The time-line of the information is much broader, much longer, and therefore not always totally helpful. Many of my clients are looking to know what is happening in the right now, this coming week, their relationship today, and I find that for me Tarot answers this more clearly than palmistry.

A: That makes a lot of sense, palmistry being more concerned with the individual’s whole life. If I have a case that needs concrete specificity cartomancy is usually my go-to. I am very much a fan of Professor Porterfield’s cartomancy as taught in his A Deck of Spells book - very historically-grounded Hoodoo style of reading playing cards to answer questions and remediate problems. 

Geomancy is also good at delivering perspective on particular plans and projects, but is still a little less well known unfortunately. So, hey, what’s the weirdest form of divination you’ve ever heard of or seen?

D: My Mambo in Haitian Vodou reads with people’s left shoes, I’m not sure how that works but she can do it!  And while not necessarily being weird, it reading of molten tin or lead, when it is poured into water. The results are determined much like in Ceromancy, divination through candle wax.

I sometimes wish I could sit in a cave with lots of fumes of various burning organic matter and scry into a mirror or darkness, giving messages of fortune, for now I'll stick to my reading room in Botanica Macumba.

A: What do you find to be the the subtlest or trickiest kinds of questions or clients?

 D: I find that questions about love tend to be the most overtly tricky – I always try to divine on relationships from the perspective of both individuals, so I can try to read with balanced perspective. I feel like some people try to use divination as a way to get someone to validate or confirm plots and decisions that may not be given approval by their friends or other associates.  I have found that in readings, the client may not be willing to tell the full truth about a situation, and that they may be reactionary when you tell them news that is contrary to what they want to hear. Even though I have a tendency to be direct and straightforward where someone may feel like my message is an insult to them or what they value, it’s rarely my goal to.offend, it is my goal to interpret the information to you as is being presented. I believe the client wants a genuine reading, not just a cheerleader for bad habits and decisions.

 A: I like this technique of divining on the relationship from both perspectives. That’s really neat. So much helping people navigate their current relationships is about identifying unspoken projections and expectations, and the bridges and gaps and overlaps between two people, not some simple pronouncement on The Relationship as an abstract concept. 

D: It takes two to tango: I can’t place a value of helpful/not helpful good/bad without seeing both dancers moves across the floor.

 Also, I find that some people become obsessed with mysterious life questions like "when will I die?"

 A: That’s a puzzling one isn’t it? I’ve only ever been asked that by troublesome “clients” to be honest; specifically ones not taking the reading seriously. On the other hand, I’ve also heard answering that question described as The Worstest Immoral Thing a diviner can do. Personally, I think there are more unethical practices than that. Historically, it was a common question, and especially the particular variant “Will my spouse or I die first?” It was considered a pragmatic question; a matter of making informed decisions and making life plans. That said, I also accept it’s a pretty morbid and potentially saddening thing to know, of course.

D: It’s not that I don't think it should not be done, or entertained as an idea; just that usually the people asking won't profit from that kind of information, nor do I believe that tarot is going to draw that out clearly.

A: How much ritual do you do around your reading? Do you light a lot of candles, invoke anything particular, or just flip cards straight off?

D: I have very subtle rituals, I read both in stores, private homes and outdoors. I usually have a candle and water, maybe use some incense to clear the air, and to make a space somewhat suitable to the Spirits, and Ancestors. I also use cloth that I have done value spiritual work on top of. Also a lot of the seemingly random items I bring with me generally serve some purpose for me during before or after the reading.

A: What are your go-to sorceries and tricks to keep your divining muscles fit and active?

D: first thing is to make sure you are taking care of your self, and your Ancestors and Spirits. There are a lot of baths and observances you can do. I have a regiment of baths, special cleanings, ways I treat my cards, and the maintenance of amulets and rituals. For people who read like you or I, I also recommend downtime, I like to take long walks, have peacefully silence or music something that allows me to collect myself so I can be in peace and centered with my own spirit so I can continue giving quality readings. 

A: You co-run Botanica Macumba down in New Orleans - a magic shop everyone should go check out! - and have an upcoming event combining charity work for local underprivileged kids and celebrating the Lwa. Could you tell our readers a little more about that?

D: Vodou, along side many of the West African Diaspora Traditions talk a lot about community which is seen in action in their places of origin like Haiti, Cuba, Brazil etc, where people are coming together to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. It’s important to me, and my business partners that we do the same. In these traditions, the spiritual work is not always an elaborate ceremony, sometimes it’s the work that lets us connect people with blessings, that helps feed a person who has nothing, or in the case of our next event, the prayer service to the Marassa, it allows us to help children. The Marassa are the Divine twins, and are the spiritual representatives of the potential power of children. Children during the holiday season all over will be given gifts, and it's a sad day when a child doesn’t have a gift to open on a day when all their peers across the country will open presents and be surprised. To give a moment of joy to a child is an act of service to the Marassa and the many other lwa. Mindless religious observation - while not taking into account the living world, and considerations made for humans, or the world around us - is often the norm, but we're proud to not be normal.

Toys for Blessings: A Service for the Marassa, The Divine Twins Botanica Macumba, in conjunction with Crescent City Conjure and Alombrados Oasis O.T.O., will be hosting a charity toy drive, prayer service, celebration, and blessing for the community on Sunday 8 December at 7:00pm. The Creepy Man In The Red Car (True Story)

I recently posted this story on Reddit last night but was removed for dumb shit reasons. I decided to post this  incident in order to come terms with it. And accept that it indeed happen and there are creeps everywhere you go. No matter how safe you may feel.

This event barely happen a year ago and it still gives me a creep till this very day. It happen during the week before spring break. It was my senior year and I decided to buy some brownies and zebra cakes to sell at school. Needed to make extra money since I was clearly a broke 18 year old girl. To give you a clear background, I live in Texas and the weather over there is kind of bipolar (not making fun of people who do have bipolar disorder). One day it would be sunny, then it would raining, next thing you know there’s a tornado warning on the news. You’ll soon find out why I mention it in the first place.

I remember this being a Monday and I run out of stock of my inventory. So I let my mother and my nephew that I was walking to Family Dollars. It took me a while to convince my parents to finally let me walk to the store. I was the youngest child and youngest daughter or my father and mother were clearly a bit of helicopter parents. One day, they decided that I’m finally old enough to walk alone toward the stores across the street. I live in the very back of my old house so it usually take about 20 to 30 minutes back and forth. I’ve been doing these for three years and had no problems about it. I’m a Hispanic overweight girl and I don’t those nasty catcalls or perverted dude that honk at random girls attempt to flirty with them. I was clearly bless being overweight and also being a somewhat antisocial and awkward girl that never interacted with people. So it was a good thing to have somewhat of a tan.

Anyway, it was a Monday and so I did my task and walked to Family Dollars to get my snacks to sell. Pay for them and just enjoy my day like it was a regular old day. That was until I was walking back on my home is when I was nearly scared for my life. I reach to my neighborhood and why halfway toward my house until I notice a red car. It was driving out of the neighbor’s and I assume it was a family going out for a dinner. Or a relative visiting family member since they’re in town. I thought nothing of it and minded my own business as I continue walking home but soon I notice the car getting close to me. Weirded out I assume that the car owner was going to the front office to pay rent. But nope I was proven wrong, this red car parted about a couple of feet ahead of me.

My heart began pounding against my chest and my stomach turning into a knot as the window roll down. This hispanic man probably in his mid twenties or early thirties. I don’t remember since it’s one of the memories I don’t wanna revisited. This man innocently ask me if I know this certain street road. Relaxing a bit probably realizing that I’ve must been overreacting and being paranoid. I politely told him no, that I didn’t know that street road. Thought that was it but I was proven wrong again.

This man proceed to grab his phone and asks me to give him my personal phone numbers. That’s when red flags started immediately appearing in my mind along with a blaring alarm. I was stun and immediately frozen on the spot. That this man had the audacity to ask a random young girl for her phone number?! Let along from his car that he could’ve kidnapped me and I didn’t even know it. I place my house key between my fingers as a form of a self defense tactic that I’ve learn from my brother. I felt my blood run cold and was stuck in a tight situation. If I run, this man could potentially follow me home with his car. If I say no, I fear that this man could get out of his car and be physically violent toward me.

Not the only thing I’ve come up with my voice fill with venom and my face becoming my “resting bitch ass face”

“Uhm, I’m 16!! Still a minor in the government eyes” I spatted

This man immediately started sputtering with fear saying I was 16 despite the fact I was actually 18. Apologizing saying that I looked older and drove off with no hesitation at all. Taking a deep breath realizing that this whole ordeal is finally over. But I was weary, shock, and emotionally disturbed. I was walking slower than ever and kept looking back in case this man change his mind and drive back to me. I didn’t realize that I’ve finally return home and told my mother this whole event. It immediately shock her saying that this wasn’t the first time that a random man try attempting to kidnap a young girl. It freaks me out that my old neighborhood whom I call home for my entire life that I’ve ever heard of it.

When my father heard of this, he was immediately angry (Not at me though) that this man thought it was ok. To be driving in the place we call home in your own damn car and just bluntly ask a random girl for her phone number. As if, that’s attractive or his own way of flirting. My father wanted to go out and look for this man. And wanted to him with his own pocket knife collection he owns. Mom and I manage to cool him down and convince him not to.

The one thing I didn’t mention to my parents or whether I felt it was part of my imagination. I believe that I saw on the passenger seat of that man car. It was a large bladed hunting knife...and I was wonder...what would this man do if I did give him my number? Or I flat regretted him? Would he threaten me with the knife and take advantage of me? Or something worse that I don’t wanna think off.

Creepy Man In The Red Car....Lets Not Meet Again

Ok let's see... its been about 3 weeks since i posted last, give or take a few days. And I'll just say its been an interesting and exhausting few weeks.

Still trying to completely get over my dumbf*ck feelings for Alex. I'm not really doing a super great job at that, and still get random depressive moments that last a varying amount of time, but usually i just push my pity party to the side after about 2 minutes.

On the 3rd of June, Alex went up to see part of her family and join them on a cruise to Columbia. She said wont be back until maybe the 3rd or 4th of July at the earliest. I kinda miss her, but I feel like spending a month physically apart from her will do me some good. Her and i still snap back and fourth to save our streak and to day good morning. Whenever she cant find wifi, she turns on her dad's personal hotspot so she can send me at least one snap to keep our streak rolling (we are the longest streak we have with anyone on our snapchats, and it stands currently at 261 days.) The day after she left the streak sorta died for the day, but she was able to save it cause she was in a different time zone.

Since she's been gone, we've hired several new people at work, many if which being new hosts (thank God tbh, cause this means after theyre all done training and get a couple weeks to get used to everything i can train as a server and hopefully make a little more money). One of them is Giovanni's sister (Gio is a guy that works there. Mostly does dish, sometimes hosts.) And apparently she likes me? About a week before she started they came in to eat with their mom and after they left Gio was like "Dude, i think my sister likes you."

Hey, some random girl actually has a crush on me for the first time in my life? That's cool! Right? It would be, if she weren't 17. If i were still 18 or 19, i wouldnt really care. But now that im 20, even though we only have a 2 year and almost 6 month age difference, i still feel like its weird. I feel like im in a whole new age threshold now that ive hit that 2 decade mark, and she just seems to me like a kid. Anyway, Sammy (thats her) is bi with a preference for girls. She's very forward about asking the girls at work about their sexuality (she'll be mid convo and just be like "wait; you straight?") She makes a hobby of flirting with the straight girls, because as she says it, she can easily flirt with straight girls bc she knows she wont have a chance. As soon as she knows theyre bi or gay, she cant even really talk to them. Sammy flirts with me in excess, has asked me 3 times if im straight, or if im sure that i am (homegirl has only been here like two weeks), and the reason why is because she would happily let me break her heart, and has said thats its too bad im not gay bc if i was she would let me crush her. Also has told me that i remind her of her ex girlfriend, and when i said idk if thats supposed to be a compliment or not, she said "well i really liked her, so..." Oh and btw all 3 times shes asked, I've told her im straight (yknow, bc im not out to the irl general public) and I'll just say that having to lie outloud about my sexuality does not feel that great. Thats not something ive ever had to verbally do before, and now i understand. Tbh i dont really lie, or at least i very rarely do, bc i dont like it, and i want to be seen as trustworthy. i have told my share of lies in my day, but i feel like that was in the top 3 worst lies ive ever told. Simply because i know thats not who i am, yet im saying it anyway.

Besides that, in these last couple weeks ive:

Gotten my computer hacked and almost got scamed out of the piddly $120 dollars total that is in my bank account for me to try to live off of until next Fridays paycheck, and almost got my brother's bank account hacked (looong f*ckin story. Short version, im a gotdang fool, and people are absolute bastards), so now i cant use my computer until i get it looked at, which means no art (sucks bc i wanted to draw myself a bi pride icon)

Put in 103 hours at work in the last 2 weeks

Had our only available car break down twice

Got about half of our kitchen painted. Still need to find time to finish it

Purchased tickets for a convention, and bought almost everything i need to finish my cosplay.

Have a sore in the back of my mouth thats been plaguing me for over a week (finally starting to heal. Its been hurting to do so much as talk, much less eat or drink)

Had to deal with everyone's attitudes at work (some sh*ts going on with the moon and everyones been a pissy ass lately, and im so over it)

The pain in the ass girl at work that we've been trying to get rid of for over a year called in and quit 15 minutes before her literal last shift (Father's day) and our proprietary manager told her "its bullshit that you just found out that your other job scheduled you to work today 15 minutes before you had to come here" and "dont try to come back to this store again". Im ecstatic about it tbqh and feel a small sense of victory about the whole thing.

One of my favorite gays from work had his last shift Saturday night and im still sad about it.

It may not seem like much but its just all around every other day something else small happened to add to the weird and crazy smorgasbord that is my life.

Also bless Sammy bc yesterday was Father's Day, and because of that, i was in the building of my work at 9:45am, started working to get set up at 10, opened around 10:50, and didnt stop until about 8:50pm, 10 minutes before we closed. Our proprietary manager bought us tons of pizza and snacks in the middle of our shift so that we could all take turns having a 10 minute breather, but other than that it was non-stop work and dedication to the customer. At 9:50am my brother went to the Duncan Donuts down the road from us to get the handful of morning people either coffee or bagels or whatever they asked for. I told my brother to get me the english muffin with egg and cheese, and if they had the option, to add sausage to it. Also to tell Sammy i said hi (because she works at that Duncan also, and was there yesterday morning). My brother comes back with breakfast, hands me my food and said that Sammy made it especially for me. (At that time i was also in a bad mood bc i was tired from working four open doubles in a row, and was stressed, so that really lifted my spirits a bit. The food, and the thought that someone made it especially for me.) And i'll just say she just earned my love for the next week at least.

Anyway i think thats all for now loves. I dont have a very eventful life, but i sure do have a busy one.

4.8.17 | Krabi and Phuket

After so many small weekend getaways, it was awesome to take a whole week (and two weekends) off and dedicate them to traveling. My friend Natasha (who also went to Tech and is working for PwC in the fall in New York!) was in Sri Lanka doing an internship with AIESEC and finished the week before Easter. We decided to meet up and explore some islands in Thailand as well as two cities in Cambodia. 

I left Friday night, took an overnight bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, and arrived on Saturday around 5am. We met up in the city center and explored KL for a few hours. I introduced her to kaya (my favorite Singaporean breakfast spread made from pandan leaves and coconut custard) and we walked around the beautiful area next to the infamous Petronas towers. And also we found Red Bull (below), which was true blessing because both of us were running on very few hours of very low quality sleep.

Our flight to Krabi was at 4pm, and we got there around 6. The hostel was easy enough to get to from the airport due to the shuttles that were running to town every few minutes. It was kind of rainy that night but that didn’t stop us from walking to the City Market and Night markets, buying some street food, and sampling exotic fruits like salak (tart, tangy, delicious) and durian (absolutely disgusting). We also ate this incredible banana/egg pancake thing that was kind of like a crepe but better. After dinner, we went back to the hostel and went to bed.

The next morning, we went into Krabi town and took a tour on a long-tailed boat to see these two beautiful mountains rising out of the sea, called Khao Kanab Nam. We docked on an island and went into some caves and tried to do a little rock climbing but failed. Then the boat driver (the captain?) took us to a fish farm which was basically just a dock with nets underneath where you could peek over platforms into the water below. They had crabs and snapper to eat and this one huge fish that weighed over 20 kilo which they kept just for show. We then floated through a mangrove forest back into town and boarded a bus to Phuket. 

When we got there, Natasha and I rented a motorbike (aka a scooter) and scooted on over to our hostel, stopping at this really beautiful temple along the way called Wat Chalong

The hostel we were staying at in Phuket was called the Camp Hostel on Kata Beach which I HIGHLY recommend, just because the host was this awesome 25 year old Thai girl named Aschi who made it a point to hang out with all of her guests and really knew how to have a good time. She led me and Natasha and a group of “campers” over to the beachside where we feasted on some dope pad thai and had some fruit juice afterwards. That night, we went to a little bar not too far away and played Jenga and drew on the walls with highlighter paint and got pretty silly.

The next morning, we woke up early to try and make the sunrise at the Big Buddha Temple, which was on top of a hill overlooking the entire west side of Phuket. We didn't end up making it for sunrise (it was way too long a drive/hike), but we made it eventually and it was well worth it. After that, we just spent the whole day on the beach- first at Karon beach a few minutes away, and then back to Kata beach to go snorkeling. 

I'd been snorkeling before, but only in places like Florida where the most fish you'll see is a school of minnows or a sand dollar. Thailand was completely different. I felt like I was in a real-life fish tank. There were beautiful coral formations everywhere with angel fish, parrot fish, jelly fish, blue starfish, clown fish- basically everyone from Finding Nemo was there. It really made me appreciate the fact that places like that still existed, because sometimes it seems like our whole world is overrun with commercialization and pollution. And though Thailand is definitely a touristy place, everything I saw was still ridiculously untouched and incredibly beautiful. Including the oceans. It was really nice.

That night, we rode our motorbike into Patong, which is a town just north of Kata beach. There was a huge party street- similar to Khaosan Road in Bangkok- and we sat down at a bar and watched a cabaret show put on by some of Thailand's famous lady boys. After that we ran into a club (FREE ENTRY FOR EVERYONE which is literally unheard of in the US) and danced for like 4 hours. In the middle of the DJ's set this aerial artist came onstage and did a whole show with ribbons and it was random but so pretty. There was also this hip hop dance troupe that was leading a group of people towards the front, near the stage. It was different than clubbing in the US because there was really no pretentiousness about it. No one was really dressed up (I got in wearing hiking sandals) but they were all jamming to the music and were just there to dance and have a good time.

The next day was a day of transit. We woke up early, rode the bike back to Phuket town, returned the bike, took the bus back to Krabi, and then hung out in Ao Nang for a few hours. We rode the long-tailed boat from Ao Nang to Railay Beach and Tonsai. Even though we didn't have time to get off and splash around, it was still really cool to sail around the cliffs and watch people rock climbing and just enjoy some of Thailand's magical seascapes.

Around 6pm, we took a bus back to Krabi airport and landed in Chiang Mai at 10.

Do I really need liability insurance?

I was charged with impaired driving when i was 21. I fought it in court and it did nothing but make me spend lots of money and drag things out even more. Now i am 24 and get my full license back at the end of this month. I have had my license for the last year but with the interlock ignition condition on it. Not being able to afford the ignition interlock i decided to not drive. I am seeking advice from a insurance broker or somebody who has been charged with impaired and has gone through this. ON average what do you think i will be paying for insurance? Do you have any suggestions to make? I have a feeling i wont be able to afford it and will still take public transportation but i am curious. Please only answer if you have dealt with this situation

Can AAA raise my Homeowners insurance rate by $300 for the next 3 years?

My property was stolen from the backseat of my car. AAA is saying if they pay out more than $750 (including my co-pay) then my Homeowners insurance will be raised by $300 for the next 3 years and it will be a point on my property. Is this right/legal??

Do I really need liability insurance?

So, I am thinking of opening a summer company and I don't think I need liability insurance. I know that everyone should have it, but I don't think it's really worth it for me. All of the places I will be visiting will have their own insurance and I will only be using the insurance for a week or so a month. As I won't be using it a lot, I don't think I really need it. So, basically, do I need insurance for my space in an insured venue. Thanks in advanced!
