A Need for Control [Chapter 5 Excerpt]

Loki kept his eyes on his handler until the second he heard the doors click closed, he collapsed down onto his knees before Mobius. Head bowed, Loki fixated on the sleek brown boots that had been hidden in the closet all those days ago, hands resting on his thighs, legs tucked underneath him. He fought the sting in his eyes, knowing full well that Mobius was not happy with him in the slightest.

Unable to stand the deafening silence any longer, Loki swallowed hard, the time collar scraping uncomfortably against his throat from the action.

"Mobius…"

The sharp hiss that was returned had Loki close his eyes, sucking in a stuttering breath, he dared to try again, just above a whisper.

"Allow me your attention—"

"Silence!"

The command sent a painful resonating pang through his body, and oh, how he loathed that word and the agent knew it. Mobius moved towards him, the tapping of his boots indicated this, and he felt the faintest of swishing in the air that told him he was right beside him now, yet Loki dared to not open his eyes or look up.

A hand lingered so close to his shoulder but did not touch. Loki could feel the heat radiating from it, the static of warmth between the empty space separating the contact. It was maddening.

"Please…" Loki whispered so quietly he wondered if he even said the word. He was not the sort to resort to begging, but this time… it was different. "Please allow me to explain."

Valkyrie let out a steady breath, soaking in the silence of the large, low-lit room. Eyes closed, she pictured an imaginary target to spar against. It was one of the few ways she was able to decompress the long, tiring days of rebuilding a now endangered society on Midgard while she waited...

Pushing all thoughts aside, Valkyrie gripped her shortsword and snapped her eyes open, immediately falling into a muscle memory battle routine. The only sound came from the blade slicing the air and the puffs escaping her lips. She fantasized that fateful day of defeating Hela…

Metal clashed against metal, startling Valkyrie back to reality. She was floored to see who's weapon connected with hers. The crooked smile spread across their pale lips as her eyes traveled up to meet their gaze. They appeared a bit disheveled, but still the same prinx she left behind.

'Loki survived…'

No words were exchanged as the pair continued their dance with blades. Her eagerness to take them down increased with each connection of her sword against their dagger. Their faces closed in, and that spark of mischief twinkled in those emerald eyes before they spun away. Anticipating the strike, she dodged their attack and instinctively thrust her sword forward, it sliding just under and against Loki's throat.

They smiled.

Valkyrie swept their feet and landed on top of them, her face hovering mere inches from their face. Loki looked tired, but that spark didn't fade from their eyes.

"You found me."

Loki slid their dagger against her cheek and across her dark lips. She flicked her tongue against the cool metal before curling her slender fingers around theirs at the hilt, pushing the blade back against their chest.

"You didn't hide very well, my King."

"Kept me waiting."

"I beg your forgiveness."
