BACKSTORY.

matthew donovan:  son of the mess of mystic falls, kelly donovan, and an absentee deadbeat father later revealed to be peter maxwell.  younger brother to resident wild child vicki donovan. 

the tl;dr:  kelly provided for her kids where she could, although as the years went on, she acted less like a mother and more like a friend, when her children still needed a mother in their lives.  her wild streak led to matt learning how to be self-sufficient at an early age. 

despite being younger, matt often had to play big brother to vicki, reprimanding her about going to school and doing her homework.  he made them both dinner and took care of her when she was hungover after a night of partying

kelly’s irresponsibility meant money was never a sure thing, so as soon as he was old enough he got a job at the grill, despite the owner laughing in his face when she realized he was “kelly’s kid.”  by this point, matt knew the stigma the donovan name carried, and — just like when his teachers recalled having vicki in class and he had to assure them he was not the same student she was — he assured her that he wasn’t his mother. 

so matt worked twice as hard just to prove that he was different from the rest.  he could be trusted, he could handle responsibility, he wouldn’t show up late or hungover or both.  he saved up enough money to buy a run-down, beaten-up old junker of a truck, brought home food from work some nights to make sure there was dinner on the table.  when the tips were good he’d give some to kelly to make sure bills got paid. 

it wasn’t a glamorous life but it was all matt knew.  he managed good grades all through high school, a successful run on the football team, and even nabbed the oh-so-important sash and crown of prom king.  

his fears of having to play football in college in order to afford it were assuaged after one of his teachers helped him score some clutch scholarships, and off to whitmore college he went.  his major?  social work. 😌

fast forward to the present.  entering his junior year of college, not too much has changed.  he still lives at home, does what he can to help out vicki, and kelly when she decides she wants to live with them and not with whatever boyfriend she’s seeing.  it’s tense, but matt keeps shoving it down instead of dealing with the emotional toll it’s taking.  joined a frat out of boredom and curiosity, although he’s largely remained the same golden boy everyone knows and loves and takes advantage of!

SEASON ONE.

jesus christ, here we are.  i don’t know what to tell you.  in canon, matt doesn’t do much when it’s not directly related to a girl he’s dating, or tyler.  so this is gonna be pretty vague until i’ve plotted stuff out.  woo!

blood bag, punching bag.  ruin his life, but in a fun and sexy way.  help him make bad choices after his breakup with elena.  bi awakening!  

idk in the season the only thing that happens to him is vicki dying and him kicking his mom out.  he starts dating caroline but i’m not married to any ship.  the boy is an open book!  fuck him up!

SEASON TWO.

once again . . . not a lot going on!  in the show this is when he finds out about the supernatural via caroline and tyler but honestly it could unfold however it unfolds!  continuing to be a punching bag and a blood bag for the supernaturals in the process.

literally someone please just give this boy something to be happy about.

SEASON THREE.

y’all know the drill at this point.   do i even need to bother listing big canon points?  no but i’m going to

drowns himself and bonnie brings him back so he can communicate with ghosts via bonnie........ wack but his and jer’s medium plots were kinda fun so catch me keeping this somehow

otherwise just takes on a bigger role in helping the gang now that he knows about the supernatural.  starts to kinda be interested in rebekah?  idk

this was an entire mess but.  it is what it is.  i tried to include as little about other characters as possible to leave it open for plotting, which is why this is kind of an open-ended disaster.  oh well!  we tried.

i didn’t even ATTEMPT to include the teen wolf gang into this now but just know that matt’s always gonna be there for his friends and help them figure shit out, even when he doesn’t know what’s going on.  will he probably resent the supernatural later in life?  maybe but i’m not julie plec so i’m not gonna have him like turn against his friends, fuck that.

and finally, matt’s not gonna be a cop, he says acab and he means it 😌  that’s why he’s gonna be a social worker baby!!!!

BACKSTORY.

jeremy gilbert, son of grayson and miranda gilbert, little brother to elena gilbert.  the first eighteen years of his life are basically a postcard.  house with the white picket fence, he is one of the 2.3 children, his parents are happy and together.  he grows up constantly trailing elena and her friends like a shadow, more content to hang out with them than find his own friends

grayson teaches him how to play baseball and, while it’s not his favorite activity, jeremy sticks with it because it makes his dad happy.  miranda notices his interest in art and soon buys him a sketchbook and all the materials a young boy needs to create

after snooping through his dad’s office, jeremy goes through a phase where he draws a lot of creatures.  vampires, werewolves, and the like.  grayson’s concern passes as the drawings become more fantastical, with dragons and knights and more.  and as quickly as it came, the phase passes, and jer finds a new interest to draw.

between the art freaks and the jocks it’s no surprise that jeremy begins partying in high school.  while not exactly popular by either’s standards, he’s a fun guy to be around, and it broadens his social circles. 

sure, he got a few detentions during high school for skipping class or for smoking, but he stayed a pretty level-headed kid.  his grades were okay enough, he did what he needed to get by, even as his dad tried to push him to try harder.  the only thing that really caught his interest was history, and that was only because of all the founders’ events he was dragged to as a kid.

and then BOOM.  crash.  his entire life is turned upside down when mom, dad, and elena go over wickery bridge.  she makes it out alive, but they don’t.  he remembers jenna getting the call, he remembers her holding him tight while they sobbed, and the rest of the night is sort of a blur.  it’s the worst day of his life thus far.

the last couple weeks of high school exist in a vacuum more than any real stretch of time.  people keep telling him he doesn’t have to go but he does, his mom would be so disappointed if he skipped again.  but he can’t stand the looks people give him, the sympathetic voices, the babying.  

he nearly chickens out of graduation, what’s the point if his parents aren’t in the audience?  but he walks across the stage anyway, and he sees jenna and elena.  he sees his parents friends and he tries not to pay attention to the way everyone’s watching him.  he’s glad he did it, but he’s even more glad to be done with high school.

he thought college would be a fresh start, but not when it’s your parents’ alma mater.  almost every professor has seen his last name and asked about them, or recognized him and gave him their condolences.  he hates it.  he spends most of his time in the art studio or getting high.

SEASON ONE.

sad boi hours. 

casual partying and smoking has turned into more frequent drug use after the death of his parents.

bangin’ vicki.  he has feels but she doesn’t. then she dies.  SAD!  damon compels it away.

anna — new girlfriend, new trauma.  he finds out about vampires.  she dies.  he wants to become a vampire, but it fails.

SEASON TWO.

not a vampire!  uncle john gives jeremy his gilbert ring.  time to start dying every time it’s convenient to the plot!  anti-damon time.  

after katherine hurts jenna, it’s anti-katherine time.  the boy has taste.

starts developing feelings for bonnie, maybe this girlfriend won’t die?

jenna dies and it might be the new worst day of jeremy’s life?  idk but it’s big sad.

gets shot by sheriff forbes, bonnie brings him back to life and he sees ghosts.  LOVE that.

SEASON THREE.

it’s time for medium!jeremy.  he sees the ghosts of girlfriends past!

big dummy kisses ghost anna and so he and bonnie break up

after jeremy fucking decapitates a hybrid, elena has damon compel him to go stay with family in denver and forget about BF.  bitch you thought.  surprise!  kol is there.  

and then alaric dies.  SAD again.  and then his ghost shows up to jeremy, meaning elena died.  vamp!lena time.  yikes to jer.

this was hot fucking garbage but.  so is jeremy’s life!  love me?

[ WOLFGANG NOVOGRATZ, CIS MALE , HE/HIM ] hey, isn’t that KOL MIKAELSON ? you know, that 24 / 1000+ year old ORIGINAL VAMPIRE. i’ve heard they are UNEMPLOYED, which means they must know what’s going on in this town, right ? anyways, i’ve heard they’re looking to GET UNDAGGERED AND WREAK HAVOC in beacon falls. don’t tell anyone, but they’re AWARE of the supernatural. you can’t miss them — they’ll remind you of BLOODY HANDS LIGHTING A CIGARETTE, AN IMMENSE SENSE OF LONGING FOR SOMETHING YOU ALREADY HAVE, NEVER BEING GOOD ENOUGH, RUNNING SO LONG YOU FORGET WHAT IT MEANS TO SETTLE DOWN, FEELING AS EMPTY AND HOLLOW INSIDE AS YOUR COFFIN.     

welcome to my feeble attempt to apply approximately seven seasons of mediocre characterization and justification into current kol, because nothing after season 3 is real anyway. we out here speeding up the process.

as a human:  wild, excitable, mama’s boy.  always striving to make his father proud.  the only of his siblings to truly tap into his magic, he was enthralled by esther’s abilities.  reveled in the power that being a witch gave him.  closest in both age and relationship to klaus and rebekah, the three of them essentially popped out one after the other.  looked up to elijah, even if they had little in common.  and even a thousand years ago, found finn to be an impossible stick in the mud.  he aspired to be a role model for henrik, like klaus and elijah were for him.  RIP henrik.  kol missed out on the tatia hype because he was chasing after a young warrior in their village.  keeping it on brand for an entire millennium.

the Big Bang™:  immediately disdainful of his newfound bloodlust when he realized he lost his magic.  discovered that violence and pain was as close as he would find to a replacement for the power he so desperately craved.

vampirism heightens emotions, and it was evident.  free-willed.  disobedient.  wild.  dark.  abandonment.  jealousy.  fear.  shame.  a fire blazing beyond control, the only solution is to let it burn itself out.  

literally as clever as the devil and twice as pretty, idk what else to tell you.

over the next 800 or so years he traveled the world.  when it was convenient he joined his siblings, and when their precious always and forever became too much to bear, he left.  outrunning mikael, learning about magic from witches of all cultures, getting daggered by klaus.  little mikaelson things.

in the 13th century, he was ordained by a monk.  if you need someone to officiate your wedding, he’s your guy!

over time, he learned how to and taught witches to create dark objects so he could essentially perform magic without actually having any magic.  catch him going on a grand video game quest to find these because they’re probably scattered around beacon falls

he hated marcellus, he hated that his siblings cared more for this newcomer than they cared for him.  too blinded by his rage to reflect on what part he might have played in that.

his violent, gory, sadistic antics were no more than a desperate cry for attention to his brothers and sister.  by the 1800s, blood and suffering was all he knew.

christmas, 1914.  bitter are the wars between brothers.  the one he once thought himself closest to became his greatest adversary.  kol wanted to neutralize his brother, retaliation for countless daggerings over the centuries, but he trusted too much for his own good.  rebekah, his own sister, ratted him out to klaus, and into the box kol went one final time.  his strategic mind got the better of him, and now he was paying the price:  a hundred year nap

the bitch is back.

perhaps it’s a survival tactic learned from his prior daggered returns, but kol adapts to the modern world shockingly quickly.  

he learns that secrecy is a thousand times harder now.  but it’s subtlety, or back in the coffin he goes.

kol wants to be better, though.  his time in the box taught him a lesson.  and he longs to be a part of always and forever.

at least, that’s what he tells his siblings.  how much is true and how much is manipulation is beyond even kol.  after all, some men want to watch the world burn.

what matters now is that he’s alive.  and hearing how much power is contained within beacon falls, he’s sure that he can find a way to restore his magic.

plot wise????  idk he’s probably just.  helping klaus out of a skewed sense of loyalty, subtly plotting his own revenge, and generally just fucking about.
